Shooting with a CCD would allow an instant reality check, as well. I'll have to try it with my old SLR. What do you think about doing the same thing using the sun and a filter? Solar transits might be more frequent, due to the fact that the sun is always "full", whereas the moon's illuminated fraction is full only a small part of each month. He came over to my house to inspect the "Weightless Woodshop Refractor", and give it a test-drive. We looked at the standard fare, globulars, planetaries, a crescent moon. He was impressed at the view through the scope, and was heard to say "I can't believe this is only a 70mm telescope!" High praise from someone used to big mirrors! We were having so much fun that we didn't get out anything larger. He also had praise for the mount and it's smoothness of motion. He agreed to a tour for members of Cindy's list on September 23rd (Saturday). If you would like to attend, drop me a line and let me know how many will be in your party. I have to let Vaughn know the total a few days before. We will also set a firm start time before the day arrives, but it's looking like about ten in the morning. Vaughn wanted me to say "hello" to all those of you whom he knows, he mentioned Cynthia by name. I'll try and get a NOVA tour lined up in the next few days as well, if Steve is settled into the new digs yet. Chuck __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I'll get back to all of you who sent private messages next week. I spent an enjoyable night at Deer Valley last night, attending the Jethro Tull concert. Despite early predictions of a storm, weather was perfect. Even with a fat quarter moon, there was an incredible number of stars. I had a great time, with good old Tull on stage below me on the hill, and a beautiful sky above. Wish I had more than my 12 x 25 binos! Satellites were common until ten-ish, when we went home. Sigh! (grumble) It was great. I posted already about the impromptu star-party at my house on the night of the 3rd, when I was forunate to host Vaughn Parsons of Intermountain Optics. This led to his inviting me over yeterday to show off some of his latest efforts. We also firmed up the tour on the 23rd for members of this list. We want to start at 10:00 am, so we can be done by lunch time. If you want to attend and haven't let me know already, please do so before tomorrow night. I have to have the final head count to Vaughn by Wednesday or so. I won't spoil the tour by telling about my visit yesterday. While on vacation, I also accquired a couple of new mirrors, figured to a higher standard than most optical shops these days, a 10" f/4.5 and 12.5" f/5. (gee, Chuck, I wonder where you got 'em?). 20 years ago, I sold my old 8-inch f/7 on a deluxe Astrola mount. Saturday, the owner contacted me, and wanted to trade it back in towards one of my new designs. No-brainer! So I have my old mount back after all these years. It can handle up to a 12.5" scope. The 5" doublet from Apogee also arrived. As soon as I can get it mounted, I'll forward my review. The price is too good to be true, we'll see how it performs. I hope Mark, Rich, and the rest of the Utah Valley crowd affected by the layoff can stay in the area. Some wear on the coatings but still give great images and mechanically fine.comes with case $125.00 2) The legendary " Easyview" planetary eyepiece. Rated by Don Parker as best for planets. Older (and better) model. Excellent condition, 7mm. $90.00 3) Orion "E-Z" finder, brand new, adjustable brightness; $30.00 4) Bino mount, parallelogram style.with tripod very nicely hand crafted of oak. Perfect for those 20x80s. Bought new at RTMC this year. $150.00 5) 6 inch f/5 dob mount with a set of "new" optics from Orion. $300.00. ( no eyepiece ) 6) And for the cloudy nights around the campfire an" Ovation Balladeer" guitar in "as new" condition $450.00 Later this week I will put what is left on Astromart. I thought it would be a good idea to float these locally and maybe get a chance to meet some new faces in the astro community. Are they still sending out duplicate work units, just to keep people busy? I processed some work units a year ago, but had lock-up and speed problems, too. In the end, the nuisance factor outweighed the romance and "me too" mentality, and I dumped the program. Thought about sending them a bill for my time! And I like my own screen saver more than that "Star Trek"-like graph. Anyway, if a signal is detected, I hope it's found by a Utahn. But thanks for the reply. I don't think I've tried the text based version I'll go have a look at the website. Cyn I've been running seti@home for over a year on various NT machines (they tend to run better than the other windows versions), but I run the text-based one, as it processes a lot faster than the graphical version. Cynthia, you might try that one. - -Rich - --- Piqa RavenHeart wrote: > Wahh, I want to run SETI@home. > I was running it at work on my Windows95 machine in > the background all the time and it > worked great. Thanks for your excellent response. If you haven't contacted me by now, you'll have to wait for another time. Vaughn wants to limit it to a "reasonable" number, and we are at 2 dozen right now. Address posted in the next day or two. Sorry that we can't accomodate everyone, but Vaughn's word is the law in this instance. If you have already signed up and need to cancel, let me know so we can make room for someone else. Thanks! Chuck __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo! I downloaded the text version and it seems to be working fine. However, do I need to keep the DOS window open for it to continue? I could not find the instructions on the site page about that. Thanks tho I'll run it for a bit. The DOS window just kinda sits there so it doesn't 'seem' like it's doing as much as the graphics version did.
