Here is a list of suitable magnets and first-surface
mirrors that will work for the "jam-jar" magnetometer:
Mirrors:
American Science & Surplus:
Stock #66001 3.5x14mm $2.50
Stock #68613 4.6x9.4mm $2.50
Stock #66027 5.5x14mm $2.50
Also check out Surplus Shed, who sometimes offer
discounts on quantities of 5 or more.
Another alternative is if you have an old, scratched
or chipped Newtonian secondary laying around. Wrap it
in several layers of tissue paper, then place it in an
old sock. Set it on the ground, and smack it with a
hammer. Carefully remove the fragments, and select
one that approximates the size needed. Take care, the
edges will be sharp, and the odd shape may be harder
to handle, but you can't beat the price. Remember
that you need to use a small mirror to keep the mass
of the pendulum down. A heavy magnet/mirror will not
be as sensitive or respond as quickly as a less
massive combination.
Magnets:
Lowes has a good selection of Alnico & ceramic
magnets, but I suggest a small, rare-earth magnet.
American Science & Surplus:
Stock #32436 Micromagnet $2/pkg(4)
Stock #33317 Rectangular $2 ea.
Stock #33316 Tiny magnets $2.50/pkg(2)
The "Scientifics" catalog also lists innumerable
rare-earth magnets. I also noticed a combination
pen/laser pointer (Stock#B31051-00; $6.95) that would
make a great light source.
www.scientificsonline.com
My magnetometer was quiet last night for the two hours
I watched it, up until about 10:30.
It occurs to me that metal siding on a home may
interfere with the magnetometer, sort of a "Faraday's
Cage".

It would be interesting to hear what they have to say.
We have seen posters from Hansen Publications in every astronomy-related
store. Their posters are one-of-a-kind and will be greatly missed. We have
bought hundreds of dollars of material from them in the past for displaying
at the various star parties that we go to. We always have posters displayed
on the wall during the Solar party held each of the 8 days that we are at
the Grand Canyon North Rim Star Party every June. We have organized the
North Rim version now for 6 years and see 4000 - 5000 people during those 8
days at the Astronomy Programs we porvide to the public. They are always
studied and always provides an opening for interested people to ask great
questions.
They will be greatly missed and a great service lost.

Karen,
Great input - question is how we can use info like this to
bring pressure to bare to maybe reverse the publication
decision, and maybe find a way to promote them more. Based
on all thsi info, does anyone have any idea what the annual
revenues were for the publication side of the business???
Is the issue Sales, or Profitability???
Might tell su the 'right' problem to fix in order to
restore. Would it help to have amaster list of worldwide
customers and organizations that ordered these products?
Seems like we might be able to build a case to reverse,
like the recent decision to hire someone from U of U to
handle 'hardware' sales.
Just my thoughts.

Wonder if S&T Sky Publications might have an interest? Or,
would that remove too much local editorial control? there
must be some Win-Win proposition - at least this is
generating interest and discussion; from that might come a
'solution'/opportunity.

I think the first step is to send Sky and Kalmbach a
press release (Joe, did you send them anything?)
They then might make inquiries on their own.
Also, what are the assets? Is everything printed
in-house, or jobbed out? Real assets may include only
office furniture and a computer system, and a handful
of copyrights.
If there were value there, I'd think the board of
directors would favor a sell-out rather than just
closing the doors.
There is obviously a lot of sentimentality attached to
the enterprise, but does it actually make a profit?

Chuck,
A faraday cage is a reference for shielding electrical
fields. Most home siding is aluminum, and therefor
non-magnetic. It should not interfere with the
megnetic fields you are trying to detect.

Thanks, Brent.
Do you think a basement installation would be less
sensitive than say, an upper-story location?
BTW, in that same issue of S & T (10-89), our own
Patrick Wiggins had a photo published in the back
section of the magazine.

Another good source of small, very powerful magnets is
out of old computer hard disk drives. Ask your I.S.
department where you work (assuming your company has
an I.S. dept.; seems most do these days) if they have
any bad or damaged hard drives they plan to throw away
and you can easily salvage some good magnets out of
them (you'll probably need a set of small torx
wrenches to open them up). I've collected dozens of
great magnets that way. The really old drives have
big, strong magnets in them that are also excellent
for pinning your kid's artwork to the fridge :-)

From what the numbers indicated that were given earlier, it seemed profits
had been dropping for the past few years. Depending on what a company
interested in purchase was looking for, that could be either good or bad.

Just watch your fingers when you play with these - they're surprisingly

Chuck,
The magnetic field of the earth is present in the
ground, under water, and in the air. I see no reason
whyyou could not place the magnetometer almost
anywhere, except in a mu metal case. That is the
equivalent of a faraday cage for electric fields.
Placing the device near magnetic materials should
change the rest position of the magnet, but it should
still pick up changes. I would not be too worried
about furnaces, etc. You can always calibrate out the
changes caused by fans, etc.

Agreed. I love small, strong magnets. Forget the
artwork, pin the kids to the fridge!
Walking fifteen feet away from my magnetometer with a
tiny S-C magnet in my hand, the mirror slowly pivoted
to follow me!
