Mike, The only thing that tees me off more than the suspensions is having my intelligence insulted by McCammons lame-ass, lip service explanations for assessing the fines/suspensions that he did. I had to listen to everyone at work all week long talk about the "GoonZZ" (my co-workers new nickname for the Grizz, not mine). I tried to explain that I felt assured that the league, having video replay to review, would deal fairly with the incident at last Saturday's game. I even told them that, if in fact, fines/suspensions were issued that indicated it was a cheap shot on any Grizzly players part, I'd be the first to express my dissatisfaction to the Grizzly organization via this mailing list. Initially, with an 8 game suspension, I figured it must be justified because they had plenty of time to sort things out through video tape review. Then I read McCammons comments as he was quoted in the AP article in one of yesterdays posts. I find it amazingly ridiculous that fines/suspensions of that magnitude were issued without the benefit of video tape review. I suppose I'm to wish that Gord had actually been seriously injured by Matteucci's spearing incident, then Matteucci would be serving an 8 game suspension. Seems that the fact that Boivin was injured was a huge factor in the punishment, and I don't believe that is how it should be. So what do we make of that, if no one gets hurt, then the violence is OK? I believe it was stated as a "deliberate 'attempt' to injure". If spearing, and then attempting to spear a second time is not a deliberate 'attempt' to injure, then I don't know what is. I find it hard to believe that in all of his interviews with "everyone involved & linesman & referees", not one would mention the deliberate intent to injure by Matteucci spearing Dineen. Especially when their confrontation took place at the stage in the game that resulted in the Van Boxmeer suspension. Should there be suspensions? You bet there should be!! But, if you're not going to do your job responsibly, Mr. McCammon, don't make it worse by trying to justify your lame attempt by even lamer words. GO GRIZZ!! BEAT THE BLADES!! After four years at the University of Minnesota-Duluth, he told his agent he was going to quit. When Butch Goring offered him a tryout with the 1994-95 Denver Grizzlies, the defenseman decided maybe it was not yet time to stop skating. Miller impressed Goring, and the rookie ended up making the team during its inaugural season in Colorado. But one Turner Cup championship and five seasons later, Miller may finally be leaving the game. The Grizzlies bought out his contract Friday. "I knew it was going to come to an end sometime. I wish it had been on my terms, though," said Miller, 30. "I still think I can play in this league, but with only 13 teams, the jobs are a lot tougher to come by." Miller won the championship with the Grizzlies in Denver, but was traded to the Atlanta Knights just before the 1995-96 playoffs and wasn't with the team when it repeated in Utah. He eventually returned to the Grizzlies. He is perhaps more known for his contributions off the ice than on it. Miller was named the International Hockey League's Man of the Year in 1998 for community service. An injury cut Miller's season in half that year, but he focused his attention on school assemblies and other community involvement. "Rod has been a very good ambassador for the Grizzlies and hockey in general," said team President Tim Mouser. "Unfortunately, player transactions are a part of the game." Bourne used the money freed up by Miller's departure to sign left wing Terry Ryan. Ryan, the 8th choice in the 1995 NHL draft, is a Group II free agent with Montreal. The 6-foot-1, 207 pound forward scored 43 points in 55 games with the Fredericton Canadiens of the AHL last year. He is expected to arrive in time for tonight's game. © Copyright 1999, The Salt Lake Tribune [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Oct 1999 00:33:25 EDT From: RICHORNOT@aol.com Subject: [UG] Re:upcoming games are there any grizz fans that drive in from Tooele IM looking for some one that what's to ride or would like some company to the games my mother loves going to the games but isn't comfortable driving by herself these days please let me know if there is any one out there thank you Rich [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Oct 1999 15:41:58 -0600 From: "Jenny Peterson" Subject: Re: [UG] Protest Suspensions Misti...Frank "Tex" Leibman is posting. The 29 year old from Prince Albert, Saskatchewan had been with the franchise most of his professional career. Entering this season, Miller was second in franchise history in games played (289), and third in penalty minutes(403). He joined the team in 1994-95 during the franchise's inaugural season in Denver, and was a member of the Turner Cup Champion team that season. He split the next season between Utah and Atlanta before returning to the Grizzlies for the 1996-97 season where he remained until today. "I just want to express how hard it was for me to release Rod because he is such a quality person who worked so hard in the community, and represented the Utah Grizzlies so well." said General Manager/Head Coach Bob Bourne. "I just felt that with all the players available around the league with fewer teams at this level (IHL/AHL) that Rod wasn't going to get a chance to play this year, and as the General Manager of this team, I have to do what is right for the organization." Following the 1997-98 season, Miller was honored by the IHL as it's community service award winner, winning the IHL's Snider Trophy as the IHL Man of the Year. "Rod has been a great ambassador for the Grizzlies and the sport of hockey here in Utah, highlighted by being named the IHL Man of the Year," said Tim Mouser. "On behalf of the ownership, the organization and myself personally, I want to thank him for his many years of service with the Grizzlies. Gross misconducts are subject for review for suspensions. If that was the case and they should be automatically suspended for a gross misconduct, then your pansie ass shield-wearing assistant coach should be getting suspended as well since he got one as well. Darryl Williams traded in that shield for a 4 x 6 piece of plexiglass, but he is still a pansie ass. C. If Claude Jutras hadn't jumped Jeff Sharples earlier (remember the only misconduct previous to the end of the game was given to your guy), this whole thing might not have happened. Actually, if the Dogs had not given up three goals in the last 2:30, this would not have happened. If you want to blame someone for Boivin getting hurt, blame Mike O'Neill or your captain Rene Chapdelaine for taking the penalty that allowed the 2 man advantage, You know, there is a reason the Grizz traded that guy. Continuing their best start in three seasons, the Grizzlies scored three goals in the first three minutes Saturday on the way to a 5-2 win over the Kansas City Blades. Counting the final three minutes of the previous game -- a full week before -- Utah scored six goals in six minutes. "So many guys on this team can put it in the net," said Brad Lauer, who beat Kansas City goalie Tom Askey 15 seconds into the game and again 2 1/2 minutes later. "Last year, we relied on one or two guys to make it happen. Anybody can step up on this team. It makes it easier for everybody. We have so much confidence and so much depth, for us to lose is not on our minds." Counting Andrei Srubko's blast from the blue line at 2:00, the Grizzlies beat Askey on the first three shots. After Lauer's second goal, Askey was replaced by Bruce Racine. Utah (3-0) is the only team in the International Hockey League without a loss. The best start in the team's six years came during the 1996-97 season when the Grizzlies won eight straight. Despite the win, Utah Coach Bob Bourne still found a reason to get angry at his team for the first time this season. Comfortable with a 3-0 lead, the Grizzlies got sloppy in the second period and the Blades scored two ugly goals. "Our defense got sloppy. They had so many 3-on-1 and 3-on-2 breakaways," Bourne said. "But our third period was really strong. I was impressed with everything we did tonight." Utah goalie Rich Parent looked solid in his second start. The two Kansas City goals were hardly earned as one was put in the net by Grizzlies forward Richard Park and the other went off a skate. "I didn't get beat by their sticks," said Parent, who is sharing net time with Ian Gordon. "Rich tried to clear out the puck and it ended up in the middle of the net. I sure thought that second one was kicked in." Although the Grizzlies are deep at every position, Bourne seems most pleased with his goalie tandem. "Goaltending is everything," he said. "I am so excited about our goaltending. You look at our goalies, add a talented team and throw in hard work and anything is possible." The game was constantly delayed by penalties. Perhaps referee James Parker was trying to make sure nothing like last week's brawls against Long Beach would happen. Peter Zurba tried to get things going in that department when, during his first shirt of the year, he looked to have lured Kansas City's leading scorer, David Ling in a fight. Zurba dropped his gloves, but Ling skated away. After a quick look to the see if Parker had seen him, Zurba picked up his gloves and rejoined the play. Everyone noticed when heavyweights Shawn Penn and Ray Shultz decided to square off at the game's midpoint. Penn, who replaced suspended Mick Vukota on the checking line, dropped the Kansas City fighter much to the delight of the 7,299 fans. Utah's power-play unit struggled, failing to score on 10 power-play advantages. "Sometimes, that doesn't come naturally," said Bourne. "More time will take care of it. We are too talented for it not to work." As it turns out, Utah didn't need the power play to win. The Grizzlies' defense tightened up in the third period and only allowed two shots on Parent. Meanwhile, Jarrod Skalde and John Purves each beat Askey, who had returned to the game. The way the Grizzlies are performing, combined with playing the next three games at home, means Utah could finish October undefeated. "Hey, the guys Bournie has put together makes it fun to come to the rink every day," said Lauer. "That's important."
