And second I am also not "barbaric" as you chose to call me. I have a fourteen year old brother who also plays ice hockey. He totally understands that fighting is something that is never going to be totally absent from the game of hockey. He is not the type of individual who would go out looking for a fight on the ice. Just because I acknowledge that it is part of the game doesn't mean that I totally condone every fight that ever breaks out. I do not enjoy games where they stop play every 2 minutes because another fight has broken out. But I do acknowledge that it is a part of the game. Some people like that part of the game. I can respect that you don't, but I think that you should be able to respect that I feel it's a part of the game. I like to see a fight every once in awhile, and I do stress ever y once in awhile. All Keredwin said was that the fighting is a part of the game. She did not condone, say she cheers for or even wants more fighting! She merely stated a FACT, whether you like it or not hockey is a very physical game and intimidation is one of the many aspects of it. What we witnessed two weeks ago was an aberration. In all my years in attending hockey and watching it I have only seen what happened maybe once every three or four years. Ninety percent of the time what is perceived as a fight is no more than a mere facewashing or dance. If I had a son that played hockey I think that what happened would be a perfect opportunity to teach the kids that fighting does have its consequences( just ask Mick). I have seen very few fights that ever went unpunished, i.e. penalties, fines, suspensions. Every other sport also has fights now and again also. Are you going to ban soccer from your children's eyes because the fans in Europe take it too seriously and fight almost nightly? There hasn't been a season go by in the NBA, NFL, or MLB that there hasn't been fights on numerous occasions. Every time a pitcher throws high and tight the batter now charges the mound. How many flagrant elbows has Karl "The Whiner" Malone thrown over the years? Yet people still converge on the Delta Center to watch him throw more. I do agree with many that the goon tactics that we have seen with more and more frequency is alarming. If you haven't noticed fines in all of hockey are rising. Yes, they do need to address the problem of cheap shots in the NHL as well as all of hockey. Until then all we can do is accept the fact that there will continue to be fights and intimidation tactics used in the entire sports world as a whole. If you wish to not support the Grizzlies and crawl into a hole while the rest of the real world moves on I for one would be more than happy to relieve you of your season tickets( if you have them). I have several more children that I would love to teach about the consequences of fighting. Fighting is the breadwinner for hockey. You can't tell me you think that 50% of the people in the E-Center are not there for the fights. It is, like it or not why most people go to the game after all. You ask most fans and (Myself included) why they first started to watch hockey. It is not the same reason I watch it now. I am guessing a new fan does not want to come and watch a 1-0 shutout. I personally would love to see that but that is not why half if not more are there for. There is much more fighting and violence on TV today. Then you will ever see in the E-Center. Just look at the video games that are out there now. Fighting is woven into the fabric of the game. It is just a part of the game it will never go away. Besides just look at the turn around the team had after Penn dropped them last weekend. After the Blades got onto the board with two goals things started to go south until Penn dropped them. I remember two seasons ago right at the beginning of the season we were playing Long beach they had gone up by two goals and Sean O'Brien dropped gloves with some one and then we just turned the game around. And I remember Ian saying that is just the thing that the team need. We ended up winning the game after being down two goals. It pumps the players up and also the fans. My opinion is that even though attempts have been made several times in the past to curtail or eliminate fighting from the game, it is so much a part of the traditions and honor system that make hockey a great spectator sport, it will never completely go away. Even with huge fines and suspensions imposed for even dropping the gloves, which the NHL tried some years ago, they couldn't get it stopped. The role of the "enforcer" type players, which Bob Bourne explained in his post last week, will never go away either. Intimidation is a part of every sport, at least at the professional level, and teams will try to "get in the head' of their opponents any way they can. The so called "skill players" are the targets of this and if it is allowed by their teammates, it usually has the desired effect. I certainly don't condone incidents like what happened with Long Beach, but neither do I condone letting an aggressive team take advantage of a perceived weakness and the message that was being sent by their coach. I agree that fighting should not be allowed at the youth levels of the game. I have an 18 yr. old son that has been playing for 10 yrs. and I have admonished him to play hard and tough but to channel aggression into his play and not his fists. However, at the level the Grizz are and in the NHL, fighting and standing up for your teammates will always be a part of the traditions of the game. I agree, also, that there are alot of fans that like to see this stuff and don't feel that it detracts from the rest of the sport in any way. I would be a part of that group. - --Original Message----- From: RICHORNOT@aol.com [mailto:RICHORNOT@aol.com] Sent: Thursday, October 21, 1999 6:28 AM To: utah-grizzlies@lists.xmission.com Subject: Re: [UG] Another thing So what your say is the some should let the peewee team know that played during the quarter break last week when they get knocked down get up and kick some ass Right not just play harder and better at what you do penalties are there to control the problem not just because they need a place for every one to get a closer look at these guys hockey is a rough and tumble sport i agree that's still no reason to fight over it [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 21 Oct 1999 08:19:12 -0600 From: "Kristine Wilson" Subject: Re: [UG] Bammer Bears What? We are also aware of the problems because the General Manager of Citadel (parent company of KFAN) was driving home last night listening when there were some problems. First, while KTKK will never be perfect, the problems have been addressed. Second, while I can't be too specific or say too much, I can tell you that Citadel has recently purchased another AM station with a stronger signal. Rumor has it the station will be a second sports station, and again, while I can't be specific, it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out what other things (teams) that station could be used for......again, stay tuned, and try to be patient. Nobody wants the radio station situation to get resolved and for the broadcasts to be better than me. I take great pride in those broadcasts, and it is extremely frustrating when there are technical problems from our "secondary" station that are out of my, or our KFAN producers control. Please keep tuning in, and trust me, the situation should be improving dramatically very soon.
