Parent helps Grizzlies school the Solar Bears, Tabbaracci By Shane McCammon Deseret News correspondent Grizzlies 4, Solar Bears 1 WEST VALLEY CITY* Welcome to the International Hockey League Rick Tabbaracci. Now sit down, get out some paper and a writing utensil and take some notes from Grizzlies goalie Rich Parent. Tabbaracci, a 10-year NHL veteran guarding the net for the Orlando Solar Bears for the first time, could learn a thing or two from the 26-year-old Grizzlies keeper. Twisting and stretching like a 200-pound Gumby, Parent repeatedly snuffed the Solar Bears offense on his way to helping the Grizzlies notch a 4-1 win over the defending Eastern Conference champions. The win was the Grizzlies' second straight successful defensive battle and improved their record to 5-2-1. Parent, on loan from the NHL's St. Louis Blues, may not be with the Grizzlies for long if he continues his stellar play in front of the net. At one point, Parent made five acrobatic saves during a1:30 span halfway through the second period. With the Grizzlies hanging precariously onto a 3-1 lead, center Jarrod Skalde was sent off for crosschecking. A minute and a half later, Richard Park joined Skalde in the penalty box, reducing the Grizzlies to three defenders and Parent. The Montreal, Quebec native proved to be all the Grizzlies needed. After gloving a slapshot from 30 feet away, Parent then faced another blast following the face-off, only to have to scramble to block a rebounded shot. Less than a minute later, with the Grizzlies now down one man instead of two, Parent stretched to block another shot and then managed to get a stick on the rebound. Immediately after Parent's stretch of incredible acrobatics, both the crowd and the Grizzlies were fired up. Suddenly, a game that had been characterized by the Grizzlies' hesitancy during four power plays was transformed into what Bourne's club has been all about this young IHL season*hard checking and lots of it to go with the dangerous front line attack. Grizzlies coach and general manager Bob Bourne was not only pleased with the win but with his team's defensive effort. "This one was even better than Manitoba," he said, referring to the Grizzlies' 4-2 win over the Moose Wednesday night. "Everyone committed to playing five-on-five hockey tonight." Saying before the season he didn't care if his team allowed two goals as long as the offense scored four or five of their own, Bourne might consider shifting back to a more defensive stance, especially with Parent in the net and a defense that includes Stewart Malgunas and new Grizzly Zarley Zalapski*a trio that could play for some NHL clubs. Even though Bourne recognizes he has a great defense, he is careful not to take anything away from his offense. After all, the Grizzlies doubled Orlando's average of two games allowed per game Friday night. But "offense starts in the defensive zone," Bourne acknowledged. "I felt pretty good," Parent said after his exhausting performance. "We played a couple times this week and I'm getting into the flow of things. I'm starting to get in a groove." Parent added that now that the Grizzlies are playing more regularly than earlier in the season, he's starting to get comfortable and is beginning to be more aggressive. And for opposing teams, that's bad news since all the pieces to Bourne's puzzle seem to be falling together. Friday, the Grizzlies got two goals from defensemen and went on to a 4-1 win over the Orlando Solar Bears. "The pressure is always there. You have to play well to stay in the lineup," said Darcy Werenka, who started things with a high backhander, 1:51 into the game. "There are two or three guys waiting to get in. No one likes to sit." Pat Neaton got his bragging rights in the second period when he broke toward the net and beat Orlando goalie Rick Tabbaracci with a wrist shot on the short side. Neaton was an all-star defenseman with the Solar Bears last year. He will either continue bragging or lose his opportunity; the teams play again tonight at the E Center. Utah Coach Bob Bourne likes the performance he gets when the defensemen are battling for precious game time, but acknowledged the situation is not fair. "I thought one of them would have played himself out of the running," said Bourne. "That hasn't been the case." Things became even more interesting when Bourne added Zarley Zalapski. A National Hockey League all-star in 1993, he has 625 games of NHL experience. Bourne couldn't resist the opportunity to sign the veteran: "It was impossible for me to turn him down. He played great for us. He is such a solid player." So, defensemen Gord Dineen, Andrei Srubko and Mark Streit and still-suspended forward Mick Vukota, watched from the stands. They watched Grizzlies goalie Rich Parent play superbly. "I had good defense all around me," said Parent. "We have been committed to defense and it has won us some games." Parent made 31 saves, most of them with the Grizzlies short-handed. Parent and the Utah penalty-killers stopped the Orlando power play eight times. His biggest saves came in the middle of the second period when the Solar Bears had consecutive power plays, including a 5-on-3 advantage. As Parent threw his body in eight different directions, the crowd became excited. By the time Rob Bonneau came out of the penalty box, many of the 6,731 fans at the E Center were standing and cheering. The Grizzlies (5-2-1) fed on the enthusiasm while Orlando (6-3-1) appeared to concede to the crowd and Parent. The line of Rob Bonneau, John Purves and Sean Tallaire took over from there. The fast, quiet line scored a power-play goal in the second period and locked up the win with three minutes left in the game. The linemates have shown some great chemistry from the beginning of the season and now are getting results. "We have 20 guys committed to defense and it is showing on the scoreboard," said Parent. "We are playing more games as well and that helps." Utah had struggled somewhat defensively prior to a 4-2 win in Manitoba on Wednesday. The players claimed they had a hard time finding rhythm with such a light schedule. Friday's win was only Utah's eighth game since the season started Oct. 8. Other teams have played nearly twice as many games. © Copyright 1999, The Salt Lake Tribune [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ End of utah-grizzlies-digest V1 #11 *********************************** [ To leave the utah-grizzlies-digest mailing list (big mistake), send the message ] [ "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies-digest" (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ]
