"(The defense) was even better than at Manitoba (a 4-2 Grizzly win on Wednesday)," coach Bob Bourne said. "I thought we committed to playing five-on-five hockey and playing in our end. Our penalty-killing spoke for itself. Rich played very well against them." Utah wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard vs. the league's best defense. Defenseman Darcy Werenka took the puck the length of the ice 1:51 into the contest and beat Solar Bear goaltender Rick Tabbaracci to put the Grizzlies up 1-0. The Grizzlies then took a two goal advantage in the second period when former Solar Bear, Pat Neaton buried a crossing pass in front of the net. Richard Park and Brad Lauer were credited with the assists. The Utah goal started a mini scoring frenzy, as the two squads combined for three goals in the next 3:07. Orlando cut the lead to 2-1 on a Mark Beaufait goal from the left side. However the Grizzlies answered right back on a goal by right wing John Purves with 6:35 gone in the period. The assists went to Rob Bonneau and Sean Tallaire. The Grizzlies then put the Solar Bears away for good with their final goal with 3:06 remaining in the game. Tallaire capped the balanced scoring by knocking home a perfect crossing pass from Purves while sweeping in from the right side. Center Rob Bonneau was also given an assist on the play. "I was pretty patient with them," Bourne said about the defense, which was ranked 11th in the league coming into the game. The only problem is, they left the International Hockey League's best offense behind. Utah staged a two-goal comeback Saturday, but fell short and lost 3-2 in a shootout against the Orlando Solar Bears. For the second game in a row, Grizzlies defensemen provided the scoring as Jeff Sharples and Zarley Zalapski brought Utah back from a 2-0 deficit. An apparent goal by John Purves within 30 seconds of Zalapski's would have given Utah (5-2-2) the win, but referee Kelly Sutherland waved it off, claiming Purves had hit Orlando goalie Rick Tabbaracci with his stick during the play. "Supposedly, they have given us the right to be near and in crease without interfering with the goalie," said Purves. "I didn't touch or interfere with the goalie. I just deflected the puck when it came. At least, Kelly was nice enough to say what he believed happened. Most refs just skate away when you ask them why." "It was instinct on his part," said Utah Coach Bob Bourne of the call. "We watched the replay and it was a good goal. They [Orlando] stole a point from us. We will wait and see if we miss a point at the end of the year." When asked what he thought of the 28 penalties Sutherland called during the game, Bourne replied "I can't say anything. They just fined me." Sutherland sent players to the box 15 times in the first 20 minutes and nine more in the second period. Rarely was it a 5-on-5 game. "I'm a little disappointed with some of the effort in the first period," said Bourne. "We weren't doing the little things that we needed to be doing." But a disallowed goal by the Grizzlies in the second period ultimately spelled the end for Utah as they eventually fell in a shootout, 3-2. "The disallowed goal was a good goal all the way," Grizzlies coach Bob Bourne said. "The referee said that (John) Purves' stick interfered with the goalie, which I think was a reaction call." Utah spotted the Solar Grizzlies two goals in the first period, both coming on picked up garbage on front of the net, one by Terry Hollinger and the other by Andreas Karlsson. But the Grizzlies found a way to tie the game with two goals of their own, one short handed and the other on a power play. The goals scored for the Grizzlies were scored by Jeff Sharples and Zarley Zalapski. From there, both defenses played well to send the game into a shootout. In the shootout, Utah took a 1-0 lead on a Purves wrister past the goalie, but the Solar Bears found a way to score three of the next four times they touched the puck. All players need to work out offseason kinks, and a game once a week didn't do it. Replicating game speed is nearly impossible in practice, and stopping your teammates from scoring just doesn't mean as much as robbing an opposing player in front of 8,000 people. Utah's Rich Parent is glad October is history. "Any goalie can tell you how tough of a month October is. Trying to get going again after the summer is hard. On top of that, we had such a big gap between games," said Parent. The Grizzlies went 3-2-1 before Halloween, relying on scoring rather than goaltending. Parent was not happy with his performance. He told Coach Bob Bourne that he and goalie Ian Gordon needed to play more to become consistent. Bourne "must have decided to go with just one of us," Parent said. "I'm making the most of the opportunity and I hope to keep rolling." Parent played in all three of Utah's games last week, compiling a 2-0-1 record with a 1.66 goals-against average and .943 save percentage. Monday, he was named the International Hockey League's goalie of the week. Parent brought his goals-against average from 3.49 to 2.72. His save percentage went from .867 to .903. Parent said the Grizzlies' defensive-minded approach of November better reflects Utah's style of play. "It was a tough month for all of us," he said. "The team is playing a lot better now than it was at the beginning of the season. We used October to get to know each other, to learn each other's tendencies." o Long Beach Rematch Bourne expects no brouhaha when the Grizzlies play at Long Beach on Wednesday in the teams' first meeting since the brawl-filled game Oct. 9 at the E Center. Utah's Mick Vukota was suspended for eight games for "sucker-punching" Long Beach's Claude Boivin. The Grizzlies claimed it was not a sucker punch, but the league still handed out the suspension. Ice Dogs Coach John Van Boxmeer also was suspended for his actions, which led to a second brawl. His team split a home series with Grand Rapids during his nights off. "I'm not more excited about this game than any other game," said Bourne. "I can't see any kind of retribution happening. We have to go in there and win a game and they are thinking about a win as well. It would surprise me an awful lot if something happens." Vukota will travel with the team to Long Beach because he is eligible to play Friday at Houston. While Vukota has been sitting, Boivin has returned to the lineup after suffering what the team called a severe concussion and should play Wednesday. o Milestone Reached Jock Callander of the Cleveland Lumberjacks celebrated his 1,000th IHL game Friday by scoring a goal and adding two assists. The former Salt Lake Golden Eagle is just 52 games from catching the all-time games-played leader, Glenn Ramsay, with 1,053. The closest active player to Callander is Houston's Paul Dyck (586). Utah's Gord Dineen is next (584). Saturday, Callander scored another goal, leaving him just eight points from becoming the IHL's all-time leading scorer. © Copyright 1999, The Salt Lake Tribune [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 10 Nov 1999 00:50:41 EST From: OliveOilxoxo@cs.com Subject: Re: [UG] Parent I agree!
