The IHL decided to revamp the format this season. The defending Turner Cup champion Aeros will play against a team of stars from the rest of the league, Jan. 17 in Houston. The starting lineup for the all-star team is voted by fans via the internet [www.theihl.com]. Grizzlies players are leading by a large margin at every position. "We have been having fun, talking about how five Grizzlies could get the start," said Jim Anderson, director of communications for the IHL. "We aren't clear on how to handle that possibility. We may have to do something about it." Take away Houston and the five players from Utah, and that leaves 13 spots to be filled by players from 11 teams. "We would like to have two players from every team on the all-star roster. It would only be fair to the other cities to even it out," said Anderson. What's more, Utah Coach Bob Bourne is the leading candidate to become the Western Conference coach of the all-star team. That honor goes to the coach with the best winning percentage as of Sunday. Bourne and the Grizzlies lead the league with a .690 winning percentage. The next closest in the Western Conference is Houston's Ron Low, but he will, of course, be coaching the Aeros. The next closest is Randy Carlyle of Manitoba at .586. Here is how the voting stood as of Monday afternoon: Forwards: John Purves, Utah, 849 votes; Jarrod Skalde, Utah, 803; Steve Maltais, Chicago, 679; Kevin Miller, Grand Rapids 655; Mark Beaufait, Orlando, 561. Defensemen: Stewart Malgunas, Utah, 754; Jeff Sharples, Utah, 736; John Gruden, Grand Rapids, 497; Curtis Murphy, Orlando, 476; Brett Clark, Orlando, 415. Goalies: Rich Parent, Utah, 823; Marty Turco, Michigan, 503; Scott Langkow, Orlando, 426; Jani Hurme, Grand Rapids, 406; Andrei Trefilov, Chicago, 368. o Fickle Fans Utah fans may be supportive when it comes to voting for all stars, but some don't show much respect for players in game situations. In Friday's win over Orlando, fans threw cups on the ice before the shootout was completed. Last week, fans threw license plate frames on the ice when Jarrod Skalde scored a hat trick against Chicago. One individual was charged with disorderly conduct for throwing beer bottles on the ice in that game. The delay to pick up the cups Friday could have changed the momentum of the still-undecided game and cost Utah a win. Pieces of the license plate frames could have caused an injury to any player on the ice. Saturday, the Grizzlies gave away a multi-media CD ROM to fans. In lieu of having to clean the Frisbee-shaped disks off the ice, team officials decided to hand them out after the game. o Still Streaking Utah's unbeaten streak of 7-0-1 is on the line as the Grizzlies play at Detroit tonight. The franchise record is 12-0-1, set during the 1994-95 season when the team was in Denver. The league record, held by Peoria and Orlando, is 18 games without a regulation loss. Utah fell one game short of tying the team record of eight straight wins. © Copyright 1999, The Salt Lake Tribune [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 07 Dec 1999 10:21:11 -0700 From: "Kristine Wilson" Subject: [UG] Monday Night Live info So far these are the people I have signed up to go on Monday. 1 Kristi Wilson 1 tbm@prodigy.net 1 Frank Liebmann 1 Mike Austin 6 Jami Gierloff 4 Ray at "Grizz2K" 2 Ted and Maryann Bartkoski 2 Amanda at "Hockeyfanz21" 2 Kandi and Michael Prickett 1 Gary Hamblin TOTAL 21 There is room for 9 more people. That's why we sit in section 114, we sit right in front of Ian and Steven and the ushers do block the aisles there and make people wait to come down until a whistle. They stop the vendors too, only during intermissions can the vendors come down. Of course you can't do much to stop people from getting up during the play, but in section 114 they are made to suffer the wrath of Steve if they do!!!!!
