My rule book says that just an attempt to spear is a double minor, even if there is no contact made. It's a major & a game misconduct if contact is made without resulting in injury, and should injury occur, a match penalty is called. I had to leave at the 2nd intermission, so I didn't see the spearing call in the 3rd. But, according to Ian & Steve, there certainly was some contact made. Just a point about Harts-and-farts and his depth of knowledge about the game he officiates. I don't know what ever caused it, but aside from generally being an incompetent jerk, he seems to have it in for the Grizz, more than any other one official. Well, at least until Manitoba comes to town Saturday. The Grizzlies won for the 16th time in 26 games, but the convincing victory over Houston was a long time coming. Utah Coach Bob Bourne and forward John Purves each used the word relief after the game. "Every team has a team they struggle against; Houston is ours," Bourne said. The Grizzlies were 0-2-1 against the defending Turner Cup champions before Thursday. "It was nice to win a close game against them. But all of the games against Houston will be close." The reason f is Aeros goalie Frederic Chabot. He is the only IHL net-minder with a goals-against average under 2.00 and the man Bourne blames for Utah's three prior losses to Houston. Having the league's best goaltender and being the defending champions gives the Aeros what Bourne called a psychological edge. "It was a big win for us," Purves said. "We gained a lot of confidence tonight." With the win, Utah (16-7-3) moves one point ahead of Houston (15-8-4) into second place in the Western Conference. Chabot may be the man for the Aeros, but Utah's backup goalie Ian Gordon was the man of the night. After facing just four shots in the first 20 minutes, Gordon was tested with 17 in the second period. He stopped all of them, tying a season high for saves in a period set by teammate Rich Parent. Gordon ended up with 30 saves and had his shutout bid spoiled only when Houston's rookie defenseman Scott Swanson beat him with a snazzy move with seven minutes left in the game. The Utah penalty killers also deserve credit. They have been stellar against Houston. The Aeros failed on three power play advantages Thursday, and Utah has stopped all 15 Houston man advantages this season. And the penalty killers often get offensive. After a scoreless first period, defenseman Zarley Zalapski raced in on a short-handed rush and beat Chabot with a back-hander to give Utah the lead. The Grizzlies lead the league with eight short-handed goals. "We are an opportunistic team" Bourne said. "There are a lot of guys on defense who like to carry the puck [into the offensive zone]. They have free rein to do that when the forwards back them up." Bourne acknowledged the Utah forwards aren't always prepared when a defenseman whizzes by them but said it is worth the risk. Five minutes after Zalapski's goal, Richard Park redirected a slapshot from Jeff Sharples and Utah was up by two. Swanson broke Houston's goose egg 12:37 into the third, making the game close. Purves put the game away with a backhander with 1:39 left. It had been seven games since the big forward had hit the back of the net. "I've been struggling. It was nice to get one and give us that cushion," he said. GRIZZ SUMMARY ! Houston 0 0 1 -- 1 Utah 0 2 1 -- 3 First Period -- No scoring. (AP) - Niklas Andersson, recalled from the minors Friday, had a goal and an assist as the New York Islanders tied the Buffalo Sabres 2-2 on Saturday night. Andersson, promoted from Chicago of the IHL, tied it at 1 with a power-play goal midway through the second period, and set up Tim Connolly tying goal at 6:53 of the third period. Anderson's power-play goal was the Islanders' first in 19 manpower advantages. The Islanders, who earned their first point in eight home games, are winless in nine games overall (0-7-2) and have not won at home since beating Montreal 2-1 on Nov. 4. Curtis Brown and Jason Woolley scored for the Sabres, and Dwayne Roloson made 25 saves. Islanders goalie Felix Potvin stopped 27 shots to snap a personal six-game losing streak. The Sabres opened the scoring at 6:36 of the second period when Brown's shot from the right side hit off Potvin and trickled in. After Andersson tied, Woolley put Buffalo back in front with 32 seconds left in the period as a Sabres' power play expired. Connolly tied it in the third with his first goal since Nov. 27. He faked two shots cutting across the high slot before firing a high wrist shot over Roloson. The Islanders had a good opportunity to win in overtime, but Vladimir Orszagh fanned on a shot on a breakaway. The announced attendance was 7,997, New York's fifth straight crowd under 8,000. The Islanders are averaging 9,347 at home. Moose Zamboni Breaks Down First, Then Grizzlies Do It Vs. Moose Sunday, December 19, 1999 BY BRETT PRETTYMAN THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE WEST VALLEY CITY -- It took an abnormally long time for the Utah Grizzlies to lose to the Manitoba Moose 3-2 Saturday. When it finally happened, the Grizzlies had blown a chance to steal four important points from the league-leading Moose. Utah (16-8-3) had a chance to climb within three points of Manitoba (19-13-4) and first place. Instead, the Moose are seven points ahead. It was a golden opportunity, but there are still plenty of chances. The Grizzlies have played nine fewer games than Manitoba this season. The game was delayed for nearly 90 minutes as a problem with the ice-cleaning machine made the playing surface unsafe. E Center personnel were preparing the ice for the 7:05 p.m. start when the Zamboni machine sputtered in front of the scorer's table and then rolled to a stop in the face-off circle on the west end of the rink. The machine began dumping 180-degree water, which formed a large and hot puddle on the ice. When the Zamboni pulled away, there was a gouge in the ice and the surrounding ice had become slushy. Building officials labored to get the ice ready, but it was a matter of waiting for the new ice to reach the same temperature as that around it. Dave Thomas wasn't at the E Center with a Wendy's spicy chicken sandwich as some fans joked. They were, of course, referring to the restaurant commercial where Thomas causes a hockey game to be canceled because he melted the ice by taking a spicy sandwich into the arena. Hardly any of the 8,312 fans left during the wait, with the exception of the two women who were supposed to sing the national anthem. There was no blow-up bear and cave for the starting players to skate through. Parents ran out of treat money before the game even started, and beer drinkers had their share well before the concession stands stopped selling the suds midway through the third period. During the delay, the statistics crew reminisced about past ice problems, like the time someone at the Salt Palace turned off the compressors for the refrigeration system. When the teams showed up for the morning skate, the rink was a lake. The game was canceled. The story that drew the most laughs was that of the time the Zamboni broke at the Salt Palace just before the game started. The first period was played and fans and players waited for about 20 minutes to start the second period while the Zamboni from the Hygiea Ice Rink in Sugar House was driven to the Salt Palace with a police escort. When Saturday's game finally started, the Grizzlies came out strong and scored first when Brad Lauer corralled a loose puck in front of the Manitoba net and lifted a floating backhander past Moose goalie Jeff Salajko. It took a whole period, but Manitoba responded five minutes into the second period. Richard Park put Utah up again on a power-play goal 10 minutes later, but the Moose scored the last two goals to win for the third time in a row. Utah returns to the E Center on Dec. 28 to play the Long Beach Ice Dogs.
