We've all got our expectations up after the streak and even though we all know better, we expected the team to just keep winning and winning. Well, we all know that really doesn't happen. So now we've lost some we should have won and we down and looking for someone to blame. Well, Bob's the coach and he catches a piece of that. I don't think him taking a couple of games off to watch his son makes any difference it the big picture, but he gets some blame. Frankly, based on his comments after the L.B. game, I think he knows he's let the team slip. So he goes off for a few days, lets Dean run the show, gets his mind going down new paths and comes back and get this buggy back on track. I was a little skeptical at the first of the year, but Bob has made a believer out of me. I have no doubts if any one can get the time back to it fine form, its him. Do I think we might slump again? Probably, these are just humans we're routing for, but Bob will keep them going. Now chill out, and start worrying about Y2K problems instead of the Grizz, they're gonna be just fine. The Ice Dogs relinquished an early lead and eventually the game as the Grizzlies scored three straight to beat Long Beach 3-1 before a sell-out crowd of 10,207 at the E Center Tuesday night. 3/8 Long Beach has lost 10 in a row on the road and is 0-4-1 in Utah this year. Coach John Van Boxmeer said mistakes have been the cause of the losses. "We are not a great team. We have to work our butts off," he said. "We cant afford to make mistakes. When we do, they end up in our net." The lone Long Beach goal came when Robb Gordon blasted the puck through a screen and past Utah goalie Rich Parent four minutes into the second period. The Ice Dogs controlled most of the first period, but failed to capitalize during a 47-second 5-on-3 power play. Utah slowly took over the momentum, thanks in a large part to the big crowd, and responded after Gordon's goal with three in a row. Van Boxmeer was most disappointed with the second Grizzlies goal. "We played a better first period than they did. We had better scoring chances," he said. "But then, we gave up a bad goal and it gave them some life." Utah defensman Darcy Werenka beat Mike O'Neill with just over a minute left in the second period on a faceoff in the Long Beach end. Van Boxmeer was upset that the linesman had thrown Gordon out of the circle. " Stephen Metcalf is good for one Utah goal each game we play there," he said. Utah (17-10-3) responded from its 3-1 loss in Long Beach last week to continue its dominance of the Ice Dogs. The Grizzlies are 7-1 against their Western Conference foes. Long Beach is now a three-way tie for third place in the West. Chicago, Long Beach and Utah each have 37 points, but the Grizzlies have played seven fewer than the Ice Dogs and one fewer than the Wolves. Perhaps the Grizzlies were motivated after learning five players had been named to start the International Hockey League all-star game. The starters for the game were voted by the fans over the internet. Utah players John Purves, Jarrod Skalde, Jeff Sharples, Stewart Malgunas and Rich Parent will start the mid-season classic. The only non-Grizzlies player to start against the defending Turner Cup champion Aeros Jan. 17 in Texas is Kevin Miller of Grand Rapids. The rest of the all-star team will be announced Thursday. The Ice Dogs return to the Long Beach Arena for a home game tonight against Houston. Their reward came Tuesday when five Utah players were named to start the International Hockey League all-star game. The Grizzlies thanked the fans with a 3-1 win over the Long Beach Ice Dogs before a full house of 10,207 at the E Center. The win broke Utah's three-game losing streak and sends the team into a seven-game road trip on a positive note. Assistant coach Dean Chynoweth let out a large sigh of relief while leaving the Grizzlies locker room. "They [wins] haven't come easy lately," he said. "We have been disappointed with the last 10 games -- win one here, lose one there. This win was key to keep us from falling into a long slide." Utah begins its extended road trip tonight in Canada. The Grizzlies caught an early morning flight and will barely make it to Winnipeg in time for the game against the Moose. The Grizzlies' players who will to start the IHL All-Star game are forwards John Purves and Jarrod Skalde, defensemen Stewart Malgunas and Jeff Sharples and goalie Rich Parent. The starters were selected by an Internet poll. The fact Utah fans appear to be the most Internet-intelligent in the IHL did not diminish the honor for the Grizzlies' players. "The fans have been super supportive all year long," said Skalde as his teammates teased their leading scorer about voting for himself. "The fact they made an effort to get us all there is all that more special." The voting wasn't even close. Purves, a five-time IHL all-star, led all players with 1,714 votes. The closest an opposing player came was Kevin Miller of Grand Rapids, 312 votes behind. Miller joins Skalde and Purves as the starting forwards. Parent got the nod to start by beating Grand Rapids goalie Jani Hurme by 826 votes. Opposing coaches seem to think he deserves to be credited with assists!? (Van Boxmeer does anyway) If he's so pro-Utah, how come our team and coaches seem to hate him so much? Sounds an awful lot like someone's trying to find someone else to blame. What's Brett talking about when he says the Dogs controlled the first period. I don't remember the Ice Dogs really controlling the first period (except while on the 5 on 3 power play). It seems to me that they were icing the puck every two seconds because it was the only way they could get out of their end of the ice. - -- Mike Austin Customer Service Engineer Vela Broadcast aka Austintatious "Keep Your Stick On The Ice" [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 29 Dec 1999 11:00:52 EST From: Rowan1111@aol.com Subject: Re: [UG] Grizz End Skid, Beat Long Beach Where's the rest of this article???? In fact, I was concerned that we would come out flat for the second period because we had played such a strong 1st period & had nothing to show for it. Also, give VanBoxmeer the one goal he is whining about. My records show that there has only been 1 home game that a single goal had any bearing on (and yes, Mr Meatheadcalf was a linesman for that one). I suppose being 2-6 vs the Grizz IS better than being 1-7, and our only shutout this year would have been 3-0 instead of 4-0 (and yes, Mr Meatheadcalf was a linesman for that one too), and, we'd only be outscoring the Ice Pups by a margin of 25-15 instead of 30-15 on home ice. Yeah, I hate to admit it, but maybe ol' Johnny-Boy has a point (I really hope the sarcasm is understood). But like you stated, when you've got the integrity & mentality of a John VanBoxmeer, you'll point to any sorry-ass excuse, rather than accepting responsibility for doing a piss-poor job of coaching a piss-poor bunch of no playin' loser goons. Sean Tallaire did it for the Utah Grizzlies. Tallaire scored twice in regulation and again in the tie-breaker against his former team to lead the Grizzlies to a 4-3 shootout victory over the Manitoba Moose on Wednesday in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Tallaire scored against the Long Beach Ice Dogs to help Utah break a three-game losing streak with a 3-1 win Tuesday. "He scored two unbelievable goals," Utah Coach Bob Bourne said. "Even though he went on a five-game scoreless streak, Tally has been our most consistent player all year long. He just keeps proving it." Utah (18-10-3) has won both of its games in Manitoba. A rare thing considering the Western Conference-leading Moose are 11-4-4 at home. The Grizzlies trail Manitoba by six points, but Utah has played nine game less than the first-place Moose. It was a see-saw game, as each time the Grizzlies took the lead the Moose responded. Tallaire gave Utah a 3-2 lead midway through the final period with his second goal of the night, but Jim Montgomery tied the game with 51 seconds left as Manitoba pulled its goalie to get an extra attacker. John Purves, Tallaire, Richard Park and Jeff Sharples each beat JasonElliott in the one-on-one exhibition used by the International Hockey League to break a tie and Utah goalie Rich Parent, another former Moose player, was only beat twice to give the Grizzlies the win. Beating the best team in the West in first game of a seven-game road trip is exactly what Bourne was hoping for. "Our confidence was down a little after losing five of six," he said. "It meant a lot to go out and get this win. I don't believe we have had that many scoring chances and our defense was solid once again." Going into the season opener, Bourne knew he had offensive fire power, but the coach worried about the defense. Turns out he didn't have to. Patrick Neaton, Brad Miller and Zarley Zalapski signed to help an already experienced blueline of Jeff Sharples and Gord Dineen. Darcy Werenka came out of no where to secure a spot on the roster in training camp. Then, Stewart Malgunas landed in Bourne's lap. The 10th year pro wasn't about to sign the contract the Washington Capitals of the National Hockey League offered over the summer. Malgunas, a 29-year-old physical player with a scoring touch, wanted a trade. The Capitals decided to punish him by not complying. "They are trying to send a message and that is fine," said Malgunas. He considered several offers to play in Europe and then made a desperate call to Grizzlies captain Micah Aivazoff whom he had won the American Hockey League championship with during the 1991-92 season. Bourne gave Malgunas a try-out and eventually signed him to a 25-game contract. Bolstered in part by Malgunas, the Utah defense is the second best in the league giving up 2.5 goals each game. Only Houston is better (2.13 goals-against each game). "He is one of the guys that has made our defense," said Bourne. "He is just an all-around solid player. He is great penalty killer and he hits everything in sight. He also knows how to score." Malgunas signed with Utah for the rest of the season Dec. 17 and was voted to start the IHL all-star game by the fans earlier this week. He earned his 12th point with an assist Wednesday. He hopes the Capitals, or another NHL team is watching. "I hope they notice. I'd love to stay with Utah for the season and win a championship," he said. "I would also like another chance at the NHL level and the best way to do that is to win at this level." Malgunas and the Grizzlies remain in Manitoba to play the Moose Friday. Being in the middle of Canada on the last night of 1999 is not exactly what the Grizzlies had in mind. The joke around the IHL is that Utah drew the short straw when the schedule was being made. Bourne isn't worried about celebrating New Year's alone in Winnipeg. "I have invited the entire IHL office to join us," he said. As of Wednesday, nary one of the schedule makers was on their way to Winnipeg Arena.
