However, he would rather they get him a Turner Cup championship. Lately, Bourne thought the team was short-changing him, with three consecutive regulation ties. So, even with the Grizzlies standing 2-0-1 after three games of the longest road trip of the season, the coach put his players through the most strenuous practice of the year Monday. There were a lot of surprised looks when Bourne ordered the team through successive, exhaustive skating drills at the Palace of Auburn Hills. "We have been a little lethargic. Everyone has been doing a lot of eating and drinking and the team was a little bit out of game shape," Bourne said. "I wanted to make a point. Christmas is over and we are going into a tough stretch." After Monday's workout, some players were upset with Bourne. The coach explained himself at practice Tuesday and things went smoothly. "The thing I didn't know was that some of the guys were not feeling well and others were hurting," he said. "They didn't want to say anything and the extra work may not have done them any good." The players have a chance to show their worth and vent frustration tonight against the Detroit Vipers. Detroit (11-23-2) is the worst team in IHL, and Bourne hopes the struggling Utah power play will break through against the league's least-effective penalty killers. "It is time for us to focus on the power play," he said. "I thought with the talent we have it would work itself out, but it hasn't." A win against the Vipers would guarantee the Grizzlies a successful seven-game trip and just may convince Bourne the team is as good as he thinks it can be. © Copyright 2000, The Salt Lake Tribune All material found on Utah OnLine is copyrighted The Salt Lake Tribune and associated news services. The International Hockey League fined Bourne $250 for his actions in Manitoba on New Year's Eve. After Utah lost to the Moose in a shootout, he aggressively went after referee Todd Anderson. Bourne was stopped short by Assistant Coach Dean Chynoweth. "I have no problem with it. They should have suspended me, as far as I am concerned. What I did was inappropriate," he said as the Grizzlies prepared to play the league-leading Cleveland Lumberjacks tonight and Saturday. "I know that bad officiating happens. When I have a problem is when they won't talk to me or the captains and explain themselves." Bourne has been fined four times this season and was told the next time would result in an automatic suspension. With that in mind, Bourne said, "The officials really struggled at the beginning of the year. Generally, they have been getting better. More and more, I realize I'm not noticing the officiating during games. I know the league is trying to improve the quality of the officiating." Bourne wasn't the only IHL coach fined for complaining about officials. Long Beach Coach John Van Boxmeer earned his for "unsportsmanlike behavior toward an official" Dec. 29 against Houston. Van Boxmeer also may be punished for saying that linesman Stephen Metcalf is "good for one Utah goal each game." -- The IHL offices are just minutes away from the Palace of Auburn Hills where the Detroit Vipers play. League officials commonly attend Vipers games, especially when teams from the Western Conference are in town. Bob McCammon, vice president and director of hockey operations, came to Utah's practice Wednesday. McCammon is charged with handing out fines and suspensions. He has been busy with the Grizzlies, namely Bourne and enforcer Mick Vukota. McCammon chatted with Bourne and then sought out Vukota to explain the player's most recent fine for getting into an argument with Long Beach player Claude Boivin at the Wasatch Grille in the E Center. "It is nice to see them face-to-face," Bourne said. "You get a rapport you can't on the phone. I wish I could see them more frequently." -- Detroit also is a popular place for NHL scouts. Bourne said the Grizzlies play better when they know scouts are watching. "The guys need to know there are scouts at every game. I haven't seen so many scouts at IHL games as there have been this season," he said. The Grizzlies also could have been more motivated after about a dozen of them attended the NHL game between the Detroit Red Wings and Phoenix Coyotes at Joe Louis Arena on Tuesday. Some players went out with Detroit captain Steve Yzerman on Monday. © Copyright 2000, The Salt Lake Tribune All material found on Utah OnLine is copyrighted The Salt Lake Tribune and associated news services. The source said the franchise, = which played its first six seasons at the Thomas & Mack Center, would begin play in the 2000-2001 = season at the MGM Grand Garden. Mandalay Sports Entertainment, which still owns the franchise, reportedly would sell a majority interest to former = Pittsburgh Penguins owner Howard Baldwin.=20 Baldwin, who couldn't be reached for comment, is expected to sign a full = NHL affiliation agreement with the Vancouver Canucks if he gains control = of the franchise. The Thunder never had a full NHL affiliation but was = partially affiliated with the Phoenix Coyotes for three years, though it = was a disastrous relationship marked by rancor on both sides.=20 IHL commissioner Doug Moss said he was aware of talks aimed at bringing = a team back to Las Vegas. The IHL covets the market because it makes = travel easier for franchises in Long Beach, Calif., Houston and Salt Lake City. = But Moss said no deal has been presented to the league's Board of = Governors for approval. Moss visited Las Vegas in the fall to talk to arena managers at = the Thomas & Mack, MGM and Mandalay Bay Events Center. Also, before the = demise of the franchise last spring, Moss said there were existing IHL = owners who had pledged to purchase the team from Mandalay Sports Entertainm= ent (which is not affiliated with the Mandalay Bay) and keep it in Las = Vegas.=20 That plan failed when the Thomas & Mack declined to offer the Thunder a = lease extension and officials at the MGM and Mandalay Bay opted not to = move forward. Owners were looking for a venue other than the Thomas & = Mack because it is a poor site for hockey, with the majority of its seats = having obstructed views of the ice surface. Also, the ice surface at the = Thomas & Mack was 15 feet shorter than the standard 200. "There are conversations = that have been taking place, and we remain hopeful as a league that a deal = can be made," Moss said. "But I haven't been involved in the negotiations, = and I am not aware that anything has been completed."=20 MGM spokesman Scott Ghertner confirmed conversations have taken place = aimed at putting a minor-league hockey team into the building. He said the MGM had discussions with several groups, and nothing is imminent.=20 "There have been discussions between us and various groups representing = different leagues," Ghertner said. "But I could not confirm that there is = going to be an IHL team here. As far as something being definite with us, = if it were, it would be news to me." Thunder and IHL officials talked to = the MGM about placing the team in the Grand Garden, but the MGM seldom was interested. = It has not wanted to commit the number of dates a professional hockey team = would need.=20 That stance has changed, at least to the point where the hotel's = executives are considering the idea. A source said the reason is Baldwin = has a personal relationship with MGM chairman Kirk Kerkorian. It is not = known if Baldwin will retain the Thunder nickname and its teal, silver and = black color scheme, but if Mandalay Sports Entertainment is a limited partner, he probably will.
