The Blades beat Utah 5-2 on Saturda= y=20 night at Kemper Arena in Kansas City, breaking Utah's six-game winning strea= k=20 and nine-game unbeaten streak.=20 The last time the Grizzlies played in Kansas City, the Blades ended=20 Utah's 10-game unbeaten streak. "I guess we give them a good reason to get u= p=20 for us," Utah Coach Bob Bourne said. "We didn't play with a lot of life. It=20 was kind of a dull hockey game."=20 Utah (24-11-4) beat the Blades in the first two meetings this season, bu= t=20 Kansas City (18-16-5) has won the last three. Bourne denies his team was=20 cruising through the last game before the International Hockey League's=20 All-Star break. The festivities start today with the skills competition in=20 Houston; the game is Monday. Utah returns to action Friday against the Blade= s=20 at the E Center.=20 Kansas City held the IHL's most productive offense to two goals and one=20 of the league's hottest players scoreless. Utah entered the game averaging=20 3.34 goals. Richard Park is a major reason.=20 Park and Brad Lauer lead the Grizzlies with 17 goals. Park might be amon= g=20 the league leaders if not for an early season slump.=20 Park joined the Utah training camp as it became apparent his contract=20 squabble with the Philadelphia Flyers of the National Hockey League would=20 keep him from playing there or with their top affiliate. Park led the=20 Philadelphia Phantoms of the American Hockey League with 41 goals last=20 season. He also played seven games with the Flyers, but was scoreless.=20 Park had three goals and two assists in his first three games with the=20 Grizzlies. Then the scoring stopped. He went 14 games without a goal.=20 "I don't remember going through a period like that before," he said. "Bu= t=20 as much as it was difficult for me, it was also good. It helped me realize I= =20 can go through something like that and recover. It made me a stronger hockey= =20 player and a stronger person."=20 Bourne wasn't sure how to handle the slump, either. "I blame myself a=20 little," he said. "We had a period of getting to know each other. I saw his=20 strengths right away, but it took a while for some weaknesses to come out. I= t=20 took him a little while to get adjusted to this league."=20 Bourne rotated Park to various lines to see if a chemistry could be=20 found. Park sat frustrated as his playing time diminished. "There were a=20 couple of games when I played only a couple of shifts," said Park, who has 9= 1=20 games of NHL experience with Philadelphia, Anaheim and Pittsburgh. "I don't=20 believe I have ever only played a couple of shifts."=20 So Park went to his coach. "He wanted to know what part of his game I=20 didn't like," Bourne said. "I love that he came to me. We had a great talk.=20 He has been getting better and better ever since."=20 Park eventually found his stride. He has 12 goals and eight assists in=20 the last 18 games, including two three-goal games.=20 He is finding the IHL a better place to work on his game than the AHL.=20 "This is definitely a smarter league," Park said. "I'm learning something=20 every day. It is important I keep learning. My goal is to improve every game= =20 so that I'm a better player at the end of the season."=20 Bourne says that with the right coach, Park could be an NHL regular. Tampa Bay opened the second half of the season with a dreary production of ``Long Day's Journey into Night,'' dropping a 5-2 decision to the Florida Panthers before an announced audience of 14,619. The Lightning fell behind 4-0 after two periods before mounting a brief rally. Frederik Modin scored a power-play goal at 4:06, but goaltender Mikhail Shtalenkov stood firm as Florida registered its eighth consecutive victory against its state rival. Pavel Bure's 31st goal capped Florida's scoring midway through the final period as the Panthers skated 4-on-3. Tampa Bay's Mike Sillinger scored a late short- handed goal for the final margin. ``They shouldn't have beaten us 5-2, no way,'' forward Dan Kesa said. ``We were just horrible. I don't know if everyone here realizes we don't have much time left to turn this around.'' The game marked the second beating administered by the Panthers at the Ice Palace within three weeks. On Dec. 27, a 6-1 loss to Florida prompted a 61-minute players-only meeting in the Lightning dressing room. Recently acquired goaltender Rich Parent made his initial start for Tampa Bay and wasn't particularly sharp, but most of his teammates were no better. By yielding five goals, the Lightning passed expansion Atlanta for last place in the NHL with 152 goals allowed. Florida has outscored the Lightning 34-13 in the past eight meetings and there are two more encounters left with the Southeast Division leaders. The Panthers led 1-0 after 20 minutes and broke the game open with three goals in the second. Mark Parrish's centering pass caromed off the body of diving Lightning defenseman Ian Herbers and past a startled Parent at 2:44. Rob Niedermayer, who set up the game's first goal by winning a faceoff in the left circle, made it 3-0 by snapping a shot over Parent's right shoulder from the slot. Ryan Johnson's second goal of the season capped a nightmarish period as the Panthers won for the sixth time in seven games, building a 16-point division lead. With No. 1 G Dan Cloutier beginning a four-game suspension for kicking Islanders F Tim Connolly on Thursday, Hodson figured to make his first start since Jan. 1, when Florida beat Tampa Bay, 7-5, at Sunrise. Instead, Ludzik went with the 27-year-old Parent, who was obtained from St. Louis on Thursday in the Stephane Richer trade. Parent had been slated to be a starter in Monday's IHL All-Star Game at Houston, but instead he made his 12th NHL appearance. ``It's a tough spot, but Parent's a cocky, confident guy,'' Ludzik said. ``I've never seen him with his head down. We couldn't give him a bigger test than the Panthers.'' Parent first played under Ludzik in Muskegon of the Colonial Hockey League. In 1996-97, playing for Ludzik in the IHL, he registered a 31-13-4 record in the regular season before helping the Vipers to a Turner Cup championship. ``This is my fifth year with Coach Ludzik and I'm excited about this opportunity,'' Parent said. ``I'm going to do my best to make the most of it.'' Endangered Panther: One of Ludzik's priorities in his rookie NHL season is to reverse Florida's domination of the state rivalry since 1993, when the Panthers began play one year after Tampa Bay's inaugural season. The Panthers dropped just six of their first 32 games vs. the Lightning and took a seven-game winning streak against their geographic rivals into Saturday's matchup, outscoring Tampa Bay 29-11 in that span. ``Those one-sided numbers have to start being an irritation for our team,'' Ludzik said. ``The Panthers are very talented and we have to find a way to contain Pavel Bure. I'm not sure how much he's making, but that guy's worth every penny.'' Hello, old friend: Florida D Todd Simpson renewed acquaintances with Darcy Tucker Saturday, three weeks after the Lightning's feisty LW was suspended two games for spearing Simpson. Tucker wore a face shield in his first game since taking a puck to the cheek in Thursday's 4-2 triumph against the Islanders. ``I know exactly what he [Tucker] is going to try to do,'' Simpson said before the game. ``He's going to try to suck me in by diving and faking it. He's going to try to get me to take cheap penalties.'' Slap shots: D Jassen Cullimore was a healthy scratch for Tampa Bay while winger Steve Guolla missed his third straight game with a groin strain. ... The Panthers entered the Ice Palace with eight power- play goals in their previous 25 chances and Bret Hedican promptly scored the game's opening goal with 13 seconds remaining in Pavel Kubina's slashing penalty. ... Tampa Bay is the most-penalized team in the league, averaging 19.2 minutes per game in the box. ... Robert Petrovicky's check against the Islanders' Bill Muckalt on Thursday night resulted in a dislocated shoulder that will require surgery, forcing Muckalt to miss the remainder of the season. The defending champion Aeros are host the game (6 p.m., 1320 KFNZ radio) and face a team of players from the 12 other IHL franchises. The starting line up for the All Stars, who will be coached by the Grizzlies' Bob Bourne , includes three Utah players, thanks to fans voting via the Internet. Complaints surfaced that Grizzlies fans cheated after it became clear that Utah would dominate the voting. However, the league is standing behind its decision to let four players start from the same team. And the Grizzlies would have five starters, but goaltender Rich Parent was traded Thursday to Tampa Bay of the NHL. "The opportunity was there for teams to take hold of and promote the voting," said Jim Anderson, the IHL director of communications. "The Utah fans responded. This can serve as a lesson for other teams if we use the same voting format next year." Coaches and players from the IHL agree. "They do have a super-skilled team; whether it's the fans or not, you can't take anything away from those guys because, honestly, if they were on any other team, they'd be in the hunt at least," Manitoba Moose defenseman Michael Stewart told the Winnipeg Sun. League officials confirmed at least three Grizzlies would have made the team by coaches' voting, used to determine the rest of the squad. The Utah players consider it no less rewarding that the fans picked them. In fact, some say it means more. "It was one of my goals to make the All-Star team when I came to the IHL," defenseman Stewart Malgunas said. "The fact the fans picked me doesn't diminish it at all. Fans are the ones who pay our salary. To be appreciated by the fans means a lot." Bourne will make his first appearance behind an all-star bench, sharing the coaching with Milwaukee's Al Sims. A look at the voted-in IHL All-Star starters -- including Parent, who will be replaced by Chicago's Andrei Trefilov, a former Salt Lake Golden Eagle: -- Goalie: Parent, Utah. A sixth-year pro, Parent would have played in his first All-Star game. Parent was assigned to the Grizzlies by the St. Louis Blues, then traded to Tampa Bay. -- Defenseman: Malgunas, Utah. A 10-year veteran with 125 games of NHL experience, he made the All-Star team in his first IHL season. Malgunas is the property of the NHL's Washington Capitals. -- Defenseman: Sharples, Utah. Sharples will miss the game, which would have been his third All-Star appearence. He finished third in the coaches' voting for defensemen. Sharples won the Turner Cup with Utah in 1996 and has consistently ranked near the top of the league's plus-minus statistic. -- Left Wing: Kevin Miller, Grand Rapids. This is Miller's fifth season in the IHL. He was assigned to the Griffins by Ottawa of the NHL. Miller, a brother of former Utah center Kip Miller, has played in 607 NHL games. -- Center: Jarrod Skalde, Utah. Skalde tied for the top center in the coaches' voting. He has played in 95 NHL games with New Jersey, Anaheim, Calgary, Chicago, Dallas and San Jose. He had a career-high 75 points in 1994-95 with Las Vegas of the IHL. Skalde leads the Grizzlies in scoring. -- Right Wing: John Purves, Utah. Purves finished atop the all-star balloting with 1,714 votes. Skalde was second with 1,683. This is Purves' second All-Star game in a row and his fifth overall. Purves has scored at least 20 goals in each of his 10 seasons. His best season was 1995-96 with the San Francisco Spiders, with 56 goals and 49 assists. The IHL reserves are Steve Maltais of Chicago, Gilbert Dionne and Shane Willis of Cincinnati, Todd White of Cleveland, Nils Ekman of Detroit, John Gruden and Petr Petr Schastlivy of Grand Rapids, David Ling of Kansas City, Mike Crowley of Long Beach, Brett Hauer and Mike Prokopec of Manitoba, Marty Turco of Michigan, David Gosselin and Mark Mowers of Milwaukee and Curtis Murphy of Orlando. © Copyright 2000, The Salt Lake Tribune [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ End of utah-grizzlies-digest V1 #39 *********************************** [ To leave the utah-grizzlies-digest mailing list (big mistake), send the message ] [ "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies-digest" (without the quotes) to majordomo@xmission.com ]
