Kruse Back in Town After NHL Stint Wednesday, January 26, 2000 BY BRETT PRETTYMAN THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE Seven years after leaving Salt Lake City to pursue a NHL career, Paul Kruse has returned. This time, it's by choice. And this time, he has relatives in town. Kruse first came to Utah as a 19-year-old assigned to the Salt Lake Golden Eagles by the NHL's Calgary Flames. After his first full season with the Eagles (1990-91), Kruse spent parts of the next two seasons splitting time between Salt Lake and Calgary. Last week, he was assigned to the Utah Grizzlies by the Buffalo Sabres. Kruse and the Grizzlies lost 3-2 in a shootout on Tuesday in Cincinnati. It was their second straight shootout loss against the Cyclones. Utah (25-11-7) was playing its third road game in four nights -- the Grizz went 1-0-2 on the swing, earning four of a possible six points. Utah returns home to meet Chicago on Friday and Saturday at the E Center. "I went out and had fun every game and I learned a lot from the older players," Kruse said. "I had a few tastes of the NHL, but I just couldn't stick. I finally made it and I owe a lot to my time playing and gaining experience in Salt Lake." The British Columbia native made friends on and off the ice while accumulating 39 goals and 39 assists in 175 games as a Golden Eagle. Kruse, a fan favorite at the Salt Palace, the Delta Center and now the E Center, also produced 786 penalty minutes during his first tour of Salt Lake. Kruse played 3 1/2 seasons with the Buffalo Sabres before he was traded to the New York Islanders. After 110 games in New York, Kruse was traded again to Buffalo. Kruse played for the Stanley Cup last June, but the Sabres lost the championship to Dallas. "It was the time of my life. Too bad we didn't win," Kruse said. "I didn't get a chance to play a lot, but that happens when you are on a great team." NHL rosters were reduced by one this season and Kruse's playing time diminished. The physical forward played in just 11 games for the Sabres and was scoreless. "They trimmed the rosters and it took a toll on the grinders," he said. While tough players are taking a hit in the NHL, that is exactly what Utah Coach Bob Bourne was looking for when he talked the Sabres into sending Kruse to Utah, rather than to Buffalo's affiliate in the American Hockey League. With Shawn Penn out with a knee injury and Brad Miller banged up, the Grizzlies needed a physical presence. "Our team started to become no different from other IHL teams when it came to toughness," Bourne said. "Kruse will be one of the most respected players in this league and in a long, tough playoff series, he will be vital." Kruse is more than an enforcer. He scored the only goal in Utah's 2-1 shootout loss Sunday in Cincinnati. He scored again 24 seconds into Tuesday's game, extending his four-game point-scoring streak. Kruse showed how he earned more than 1,000 penalty minutes in the NHL last week when he squared off with Kansas City's Dody Wood. It was quite possibly the best hockey bout in the E Center's five seasons. Bourne would love to take credit for enticing the veteran of more than 400 NHL games to the Grizzlies, but the truth is Kruse picked Utah. Kruse met his wife in Salt Lake -- not when he was playing for the Eagles, but several years ago during the NHL all-star break while attending a Grizzlies game at the E Center with friends. The Flames stopped at the Salt Lake airport on their way to Phoenix. "I turned to the guys and told them I would see them in Phoenix, because I was going to stay in Utah during the break," Kruse said. His friends took him to a Grizzlies game where he was introduced to Laurie-Ann, whom he eventually married. The couple now has two children. When Bourne called, Kruse quickly accepted the chance to return to Utah. His in-laws live five minutes from the E Center. So Kruse finds himself back where it all began. "My wife and I talked about it and we decided that if ever the time came where I would be going back to the minors, that we would try to make it Utah," he said. "It has been a crazy circle." That doesn't mean he has given up on the NHL. "I'm only 29, so I still have plenty of time to make it back to the NHL," he said. "There will be two new expansion teams, so I could land something during the offseason." If that doesn't happen, there is always Salt Lake. It is, after all, the only place Paul Kruse has played minor league hockey. © Copyright 2000, The Salt Lake Tribune All material found on Utah OnLine is copyrighted The Salt Lake Tribune and associated news services. To read the remainder of the article, go to www.inthecrease.com/ihl/index.html. It's about Rich Parent, so I thought some would be interested. Bernie's Back; Vipers Rated PG-31 By Larry Nader - January 26, 2000 AUBURN HILLS, Mich. - It has been a miserable year for Viper fans, no one can argue that point. The sometimes up and mostly down play of the sixth-year International Hockey League franchise, which is in their first year of affiliation, has had even the most faithful of cold floor aficionados shaking their heads in bewilderment. Surely every fan and season ticket holder knew heading into this season that they would not see the same caliber of hockey that has graced the Palace in the past. But, just as surely, no one expected to have to endure the debacle the 1999-2000 season has turned out to be. The fact that the team plays solidly some nights and seems to play at half speed on others has many long time season ticket holders talking about not renewing. There has been little to celebrate this year for sure. When there is no reason for large celebrations, small ones will do. That reason came on Monday, January 24 when the Tampa Bay Lightning sent Viper fan-favorite goaltender Rich "Bernie" Parent back to the Snakepit. Parent, who dons the number 31 on his jersey, was recently acquired from St. Louis as part of a deal that sent RW Stephane Richer to the Blues. After playing a pair of games with the Lightning while covering for a suspended Dan Cloutier, Parent was reassigned to Detroit, a team where he has fond memories of better times and a Turner Cup championship. The 6-3 IHL veteran netminder played solidly in his first game back with his former club, stopping all 30 shots fired his way by the Long Beach Ice Dogs en route to a 1-0 shutout victory. For Parent it was the 10 time he has faced the Dogs this season with the previous nine games coming as a member of the Utah Grizzlies. "This was my 8th win this year against Long Beach," Parent said. "These guys are getting sick of seeing me now." "Obviously, I'd rather see him with Detroit than with Utah," Ice Dogs head coach John Van Boxmeer remarked following the game. While his new team provided little offensive help, mustering only 11 shots in the game and none in the third period, they did help out by clearing the puck following the initial save thus taking away the rebound chances. The third period was a rough one though as Long Beach outshot the Snakecrew 13-0. "I saw the glare from the other end of the ice like it was not touched," Parent mused about the lopsided period. "But, you knew they were going to come after you hard, but we held them off. I don't know if there would have been another period if we would have held them off, but we held the off." Parent must have had a rabbit's foot in his pads as several missed open net chances had the IceDogs wonder what they had to do to score. One puck hit Parent in the back, landed in the crease and stayed out of the net until a Detroit defender managed to clear it away. Two other chances were sent wide as the shooter was blinded by net. "I was like on my backstroke," Parent laughed about the lucky breaks. "My swimming techniques were getting up there tonight. What can you do? You try anything you can to stop the puck." Being dealt to Tampa Bay was kind of like coming home for the 6th year pro goaltender. While the city was foreign to him, the clubhouse was anything but. "It was kind of weird, because I went to a new team up there but it wasn't really a new team," Parent remarked. "I knew a couple of the guys, the whole coaching staff and the medical staff, you name it. Usually when you go to a new team you are quiet, you don't know anybody. But there it was like I was back to my roots. "I was pretty happy with the trade. St. Louis didn't really give me a shot this year. I played 12 games for them last year and I came into camp this year and it was kind of a numbers game. So, the trade I know will benefit me in the long run. There team is not very strong up there and their goaltending is going to take a beating no matter how good their goalies are. So I think I'm going to get a chance. More than I would with St. Louis." While Detroit fans would like nothing more than to see the man they affectionately call Bernie playing full time in the NHL, they also maintain hope that he will at least remain a part of their team for a few more months. I know and accept the fact that I am in the public eye, but I have dealt with that my whole life and only expect attacks on my professional abilities. Enough of that. The thing that bothers me about what has transpired here is this. In no way do I want any of you to change your input into what you have to say. You have all been wonderful and supportive and critical at times, but some of that is expected and warranted. Please do not think I don't appreciate the dialogue you have over this list. I enjoy reading them and don't want them to stop. I do not and should not critique them in any shape or manner. You people are crucial to any teams' success. I personally thank you for that. We have one heck of a team here but it hurt us tremendously when Ritchie was picked up. I think all of you know how crucial goaltending is and trust me, we will not have as much success if that position is not our best one. Can Ian and Mike carry the load? I don't know for sure but please have some patience until I get it sorted out. Anyway, like I said, please do not stop doing what you were doing before. Its your right.
