Devils' Ftorek suspended by NHL for one game Updated 5:37 PM ET January 31, 2000 EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- New Jersey Devils coach Robbie Ftorek was suspended for one game by the NHL on Monday for throwing part of the team's bench onto the ice during a game at Detroit. Ftorek threw the bench during the second period of New Jersey's 3-1 loss to the Red Wings on Saturday. He was incensed that referee Stephen Walkom had failed to stop play while Devils forward Jay Pandolfo lay on the ice with serious facial cuts. Detroit's Kirk Maltby scored, giving the Red Wings a 3-1 lead while play continued. Pandolfo required 84 stitches to close four separate wounds on his forehead and around his left eye. Walkom said after the game he didn't stop play because he hadn't seen Pandolfo, Ftorek said. The NHL also fined Ftorek, team general manager Lou Lamoriello said. The amount of the fine was not disclosed. Assistants Larry Robinson and Slava Fetisov will coach the team during Wednesday night's game at New York against the Rangers. Bourne filled up the Utah roster during Archibald's silence. It was a different story when Bourne called Tuesday and left a message at Archibald's apartment in Sweden. The former Grizzly caught the next flight to North America, leaving his Swedish Elite League team without even saying goodbye. Archibald played 20 games with Linkoping, but the team has been out of the playoff race for a month, and he couldn't see staying on a sinking ship. Not when he had an offer from Utah. "It is a good hockey league and my team had a lot of good players, but it ended up that my team just wasn't quite what they said it would be when I signed to play there," Archibald said after skating Thursday with the Grizzlies. Even if Archibald had wanted to take some time to make his decision, he wouldn't have had it. The IHL mandates that all players on playoff rosters be in North America by Feb. 2. Archibald arrived in Salt Lake just before midnight Wednesday after 26 hours of travel. "I may have made up my mind quickly, but the truth is I was thinking of leaving anyway. I was actually considering just going home," he said. Archibald's quick departure left his Swedish team fuming and threatening lawsuits against the player and the Grizzlies. Bourne brought Archibald in for experience and depth. He could play tonight against Grand Rapids, but is more likely to play Sunday in Chicago. While the Grizzlies gained Archibald, they may have lost defenseman Stewart Malgunas. Nashville of the National Hockey League picked up Malgunas' rights from the Washington Capitals. The Predators assigned the defenseman to Milwaukee of the IHL, but he must first clear NHL waivers. Malgunas' contract states that if he is signed by an NHL team and sent down to the minors, it would have to be to the Grizzlies. Malgunas, an IHL All-Star this season, will be on the waiver list until Saturday morning. He will not be eligible to play in tonight's game. His future should be clear before the Grizzlies play Sunday.
