With a second chance to become No. 1 on Wednesday, Gordon deflected the pressure and 20 shots to lead Utah to a 2-0 win over the Houston Aeros at the E Center. The shutout was Gordon's first, and came after he finally realized that all he could control was his own play. "Sometimes, I wonder if the team has more confidence in me than I do in myself," Gordon said after his 10th victory of the season. The Utah defense displayed that confidence -- or maybe not -- by allowing the Aeros just 20 shots. "They were real warriors," Gordon said. "Diving for pucks, blocking shots, clearing rebounds; they wanted the win as much as I did." The Grizzlies dominated the game. Aggressive play on the Houston end resulted in numerous scoring chances for Utah and a Joe Frederick goal early in the third period. Even with referee Terry Koharski helping Aeros defenseman Filip Kuba collect a loose stick in the first period, the Grizzlies kept the puck on the Houston end most of the game. Gordon started after Corey Hirsch, acquired Saturday from the Nashville Predators of the National Hockey League, was called up Monday. It is the second time this season Gordon was called into action due to an NHL move. He did not fare well when the Tampa Lightning traded for Rich Parent on Jan. 13. "I didn't play well when Rich left. That may have been my chance to say I will be the guy through the end of the season," Gordon said. Utah Coach Bob Bourne gave Gordon that chance, but arranged for Hirsch to be sent to the Grizzlies when the team lost six of nine games after Parent left. "Ian put a lot of pressure on himself when Richie was traded," Bourne said. "It was only because he wanted to play better for his teammates." Hirsch's arrival brought excitement to the team. Gordon joined his teammates in celebrating the arrival of another goalie under contract with an NHL team. At the same time, he was hurt. "I can't say I didn't want to be the No. 1 guy," Gordon said. Hirsch played an amazing game Sunday in Chicago, making 32 saves and leading the Grizzlies to a 5-3 win. Nashville called Monday, and the man Bourne said was going to the Utah "workhorse" was gone. Gordon called the last few weeks "an emotional roller coaster." The ride ended Wednesday. Still, Gordon knows he is Utah's second-best goalie. "Corey Hirsch is too special of a goalie. Bob had to take him when he became available. I'm excited for when he gets back," Gordon said. Hirsch, filling in for a backup goalie with a sprained thumb, could be back by Saturday's game at the E Center against Cleveland. He will more likely join the Grizzlies in time to play his former team in Milwaukee on Sunday. Grizzlies 2, Aeros 0 Houston 0 0 0--0 Utah 0 1 1-- 2 First Period -- No scoring. Goalie roster changes beyond the control of head coach/general manager Bob Bourne left the team scrambling for their two home games this week. It meant more questions about a position that has been their most vulnerable since Richard Parent was called up to the NHL last month. But if the Grizz have been struggling with their goaltending, it wasn't apparent Wednesday night. In their third win in a row, the Grizzlies shut out the defending Turner Cup Champion Houston Aeros 2-0 in front of 6,139 fans at the E Center. That's right, shut out. Goalie Ian Gordon had 20 saves in a game he likely wouldn't have played in had Corey Hirsch not been called up to the NHL for a week because of an injury to a Nashville Predator goalie. The call came just 48 hours after Utah acquired Hirsch for center Rob Bonneau. "I thought Ian played pretty solid," Bourne said. "He had some real tough saves. I've probably been a little hard on him, but no harder than he's been on himself. He just gave us the goal tending you have to have to win." According to teammates and Bourne, Gordon may have been putting too much pressure on himself to win after Parent's departure. The result was a change in his game that produced inconsistency. After losing Parent, the Grizzlies lost four straight, two in shootouts. Hirsch is the second goalie the Grizz acquired in trying and find some net minding stability. He will likely only be gone a week, but it means Utah is without him for two home games at a critical juncture in the season. At Tuesday's practice, Gordon said he wasn't letting the turmoil affect him. "I'm fine," he said. "I can only control myself . . . I can't worry about what everyone else does or says. I'll play whenever I'm given the opportunity. . . . It's up to me to prepare myself. You can't get caught up in the hoopla of who's coming and who's going." Whatever he did to "prepare" himself worked against the Aeros. "I'm not saying it was the best hockey game all year, but we did what we had to do," Bourne said. "We all realized what an important game this was." Important because the Grizz gained ground on Western Conference leader Manitoba. While Utah won, the Moose lost to the Chicago Wolves Wednesday night, meaning only three points separate the two teams, and the Grizzlies have played eight fewer games. It was important, too, that the team find some balance with all the changes. "It's been a little frustrating," said center Jarrod Skalde who scored for the fourth straight game. "Especially the goal tending situation. . . . We know Bob Bourne is out there trying to rectify that situation, and we have to play as best we can whoever is in there." Skalde said the team may have been playing a little too fancy for the home fans while just playing physical on the road. Wednesday night, he said they tried to rectify that with less flashy play. One of the things that's been the most disappointing to the team is how much they wanted Gordon to succeed. Skalde, like Bourne, believes Gordon looked at Parent's departure as an opportunity to step up his game. As a result though, Gordon put an excessive amount of pressure on himself to make one game count more than the others. "That really isn't fair to him," Skalde said. "We have all the confidence in him in the world. Now he's got that for himself. We believe in him." Skalde scored Utah's first goal with just under five minutes left in the second period. Zarley Zalapski passed up a shot opportunity by dropping the puck to a trailing Skalde who knocked it past Houston's goalie Frederic Chabot, who had 26 saves in the game. Then at 14:46 in the third period, Joe Federick lifted a shot over Chabot on an assist from Dave Archibald. As for the turmoil, well, that appears to be yesterday's problem. "I think Ian just put an awful lot of pressure on himself when Rich left," Bourne said. "I think he's gotten over that and back to his old self." The main reason why the GMs decided to change the terminology was to give credit where credit was due. A shootout loss (especially by us) has never been considered a loss. Some of the local media saw it that way, but that is why there is a change made. The SP category is no different than the NHL's new RT (regulation tie) category. In the NHL, both teams get a point for going to overtime. If one team wins in OT, they get the extra point, but the team that lost the overtime still gets a tie listed on their record since they earned a point. It has always been the same train of thought in the IHL. If you get a point, no matter how, it is not a loss. In hockey, winning percentage is calculated by points earned/total points possible. (for Utah, 63/96. good for .656) Granted, the term "winning percentage" may not be completely accurate, but it sounds better than "points earned percentage". The former SOL are now just refered to as shootout points. "It may just be a question of semantics, but in my book, a team that is 15-15-5 isn't a .500 team. They've actually lost more than they've won." This is why we have changed the name of the term. 15-15-5 is .500 because that third category is a tie. We have been calling it loss, but was never considered to be a loss. It was a loss in the shootout, not the game. To help alleviate that notion, we no longer call it a loss at all. Trust me RJ, I know are a fan of the team and we here certainly appreciate it a lot. BTW, I finally had the chance to meet some people from this list at Wednesday game.
