The Milwaukee Admirals center, who played in 37 games for Utah earlier in the year, was a rather rude guest Friday night. Bonneau beat former Admirals goaltender Corey Hirsch for the decisive shootout tally as Milwaukee outlasted the Grizzlies, 5-4, in an International Hockey League game. Bonneau also had a goal as the Admirals (33-31-9) snapped a six-game losing streak. Milwaukee's magic number to clinch a playoff spot is now 15 points (a combination of Milwaukee points and missed Michigan point opportunities totaling 15). Admirals goaltender Chris Mason caught some breaks in the shootout when Utah's Richard Park and Darcy Werenka hit the post with their shots. The teams were tied, 3-3, entering the final period. Milwaukee broke the tie when Eric Bertrand's backhand shot sailed past Hirsch into the upper left corner of the net to make it 4-3 with 7 minutes 30 seconds left in the game. It appeared that the Admirals would post a victory in regulation, but the Grizzlies (39-23-11) scored with 1:02 remaining to force the shootout. The Grizzlies pulled Hirsch in favor of an extra skater and the Admirals were called for icing while the net was empty. After the ensuing faceoff in the Milwaukee zone, Utah's John Purves scored on a rebound to tie the game. First period - 1. Utah, Werenka 14 (Aivazoff, Lauer), 4:34. 2. Our defense was much improved, and we had a very aggressive offense last night too. It was great to see that much fire! John Purves is The Man!! He always seems to pull through when we need it most. I was bummed about the outcome of the shootout, but at least we got a point in the standings with it. Plus, I thought the game was played with such an improved intensity, I really can't say it wasn't a great game. Looking forward to Sunday. :) [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 01 Apr 2000 11:55:01 -0700 From: Jenny Peterson Subject: Re: [UG] Admirals Sink Grizzlies This is an interesting article. Sounds like the team is feeling defeated...which needs to change. Yes, these games are very important. Yes, they need every point they can get. But, if the guys allow themselves to feel defeated mentally, then the playoffs won't even be worth our time. You win some, you lose some. So, we need to work on shootout performance...then that gives us a challenge to meet. This is a GREAT team, with some truly exceptional players. There are some new faces and playing styles since the trades that everyone needs to get used to working with, but it can be done. Wasn't it just a few years ago that we came back from an 8-game losing streak to win a Turner Cup?? !!! And the fans... I'm hearing a lot of talk about the outcome of the Turner cup. C'mon guys! I saw people writing last night's game off with a minute left on the clock...and what happens? Purves comes in and scores. People complain about the shootout loss...but we at least get a point for it. Less than 60 seconds earlier, we wouldn't even have had that point, if it weren't for the players who didn't give up! Let's keep that it mind. It only takes 3 seconds to set up and score... It's not over 'til it's over. I know our team has what it takes...I hope we can all rally behind them. If the team and the fans start out with a defeatest attitude from the beginning...why even bother with the playoffs?? We have to believe in our team, and the team must believe in themselves! If they play the games to come with as much heart as I witnessed last night, I don't care if we bring the Cup home or not. I'll be very happy with the performance as long as I know that they did their best. If you give everything you've got...then you win, regardless of who gets the award. Okay. Off my soapbox now. :) [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 01 Apr 2000 12:35:16 MST From: "Ray Brown" Subject: [UG] Time to bribe the team.... Wow! It seemed like we were finally back to playing like we normally play. We played with intensity the whole game--even in the third period. It looked like we were finally going to pull out of our slump, and Chicago took it away with 0.9 seconds left. UGH!!! Even though we lost it was still good to see us in the game. It was nice to see Gord Dineen, too. I felt sad for him when I listened to the first intermission interview, but he seemed like he was doing well. But, considering the team we were playing, the morale issues that might have been apparent with Gord playing in the wrong uniform, and all other morale issues...I thought the game was GREAT. I love our guys. They're playing hard, fast, and with heart. You can't ask for more than that! To be honest, I figured that if we played a decent game against Chicago and didn't lose by too many it would be a good night. The team did an incredible job. In spite of the outcome, this has still got to be a confidence builder for them. To be that competitive against the team with the best record in the league was exciting. If they can play Manitoba that tough, they could end up running up the score on them. Keep up the great work guys! - -- Mike Austin Customer Service Engineer Vela Broadcast aka Austintatious "Keep Your Stick On The Ice" [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Apr 2000 00:19:43 -0600 From: "Kelley Lindberg" Subject: [UG] Season ticket holders: Free shirt! What a game. At the last break in the play, with 4.7 seconds left, with the face off in our zone, I just had a sinking feeling that Chicago was going to score. Sure enough, 0.9 seconds left.... Arrgggghhhh! I can't even imagine the frustration Tab (I'm not even going to try to spell his name on a Monday) must have felt! No wonder he had trouble with the shootout. Oh well, it was a good game against a good team. Season ticket holders: Did you know we get a free Grizzlies turtleneck? Last summer, we got a letter saying that all season ticket holders would get a free sweatshirt. Well, I called at the beginning of the season to find out how, and was told they would be given away at a special event. Obviously, that never happened. I finally remembered about the shirt a couple of weeks ago and called Neil Lund again. He said they had the shirts (turtlenecks, not sweatshirts) at the Grizzlies Team Store, and that all you have to do is go in and ask for it. They have a list at the counter of all season ticket holders, and they will check off your name and give you a shirt. One shirt per account. The guy at the counter said they sent out a letter at the beginning of the season, and included reminders in several of the newsletters throughout this season, telling people to come get their shirts. I never received such reminders, nor did any of the season ticket holders who sit in my immediate vicinity, so I thought I'd do my own little public service announcement and let you all know about this. This is just one more benefit for season ticket holders. I really want to thank the Grizz organization for doing so much for the season ticket holders this year. The main benefit, of course, is the great discount on great seats. That's the best part, and I love being able to afford season tickets. But I've also appreciated the free turtleneck, the hockey puck, the $25 gift certificate for early payment, and the reserved parking area. (By the way, including parking in the ticket price has got to be one of the single biggest improvements made this year!) As the regular season winds down, I just thought I'd let the Grizz staff know that this fan appreciates the efforts you've made for us this year. I know we do our share of complaining on this list, so I wanted to remind you that complaining isn't all we do! Thank you for everything! Anticipating the playoffs...
