No one recalls the details of that historic game and it is a safe bet Team USA's 16-1 thrashing of Germany here Monday will only be remembered as a stepping stone to bigger victories. The U.S. team started the 2000 Women's World Hockey Championships in convincing fashion, showing dedication and discipline. "We never want to look ahead," Team USA captain Cammi Granato said. "Coach [Ben] Smith has made sure we take care of the little things like passing and shooting and it has made a difference." The U.S. players used the two German goalies like mechanical tutor shooters, firing 61 shots during the 60 minutes of play. Realizing what Stephanie Wartosch (33 shots, 25 saves) and Manuela Hirschbeck (28 shots, 20 saves) were facing, fans at the Molson Centre began cheering whenever they made a stop. Team USA viewed Day One of the Tournament as just another exhibition to prepare for the Canadians. Saturday, the Americans primed themselves with a 15-0 victory over Japan. Smith was impressed with the win only because his team didn't fall to the level of the Germans. "We expected to dominate them," Smith said. "We played hard and our intensity didn't stop. Wedidn't fall like you sometimes when you are playing a lessor opponent." Goalie Sarah DeCosta looked a little uncomfortable guarding the U.S. net, but don't blame her for being surprised when the Germans scored on their second shot. Despite the fact the USA had four defenseman on the ice without world championship experience, DeCosta's teammates only allowed Germany 11 shots. During a welcoming reception for the players Sunday, the Germans were the only team which didn't have anything to say. The annonucer stated "Germany has opted not to say anything; that they will let their play speak for them." Their play Monday was nearly as substantial as their statement, or lack thereof. Karyn Bye and Trisha Dunn each scored three goals and 18-year-old Krissy Wendell had four assists. Fifteen of the 18 U.S. players earned a point, including DeCosta. In the other Pool B game Monday, Finland beat Russia 7-1. The U.S. plays Russia tonight. Canada, the No. 1 seed in Pool A, easily managed Japan 9-0 Monday. © Copyright 2000, The Salt Lake Tribune [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Apr 2000 08:13:54 -0500 From: "Romero, Robert" Subject: [UG] Grizzlies vs. Moose Grizzlies vs. Moose Tuesday, April 4, 2000 -- At the E Center, West Valley City -- Faceoff: 7 p.m. today -- Radio: KWUN-AM (1230) -- Internet: www.broadcastsports.com -- Records: Utah 39-23-12; Manitoba 34-28-14 -- Season Series: Tied, 3-3-1 -- Last Meeting: Manitoba 5, Utah 4 (March 7) _________ About the Grizz: They can clinch one of the five Western Conference playoff spots with a regulation win. . . . I asked if I could see it, thinking it was probably just a player that I had never heard of. He found the page that the card was on and I nearly fell out of my chair. There staring up at me was none other than Dave Archibald. The card was a 1994 Topps Premier Card. Dave was playing for the Ottawa Senators.
