Trust me. I have been a HUGE supporter of Vukota for the past 5 years...even when he wasn't playing with the Grizz I followed his play in the NHL. Anyone who knows me knows how big a Vukota fan I am. His play this year has been Great! I've even witnessed a couple of goals!! But, the fact is, I think Bob is a good coach with a solid thought process. Being late for the team bus has nothing to do with his play on the ice. How a player behaves off the ice with his teammates is also important to the unity of the team. The reason I personally believe he should be benched if Bob thought he should is because I believe Bob wouldn't have done that if he didn't feel it necessary. We have seen a lot of Mick on the ice this year, and I have really enjoyed seeing him play with so much heart. It was disappointing to me not to see him on the ice during that last game. So all I can say is that I don't feel I am being quick to judge Mick based on Bob's comments. I'm just agreeing that any player who fails to contribute to the team unity deserves to be handled however the coach feels necessary. We don't know what that happens off the ice with the players, but the coach does. Just as I assume there is a process to why Bob suspends his players, perhaps you should assume there is a process to why some of us are willing to agree that Bob made the right decision. The suspension at the beginning of the season was handed down by the league, not by the coach. Bob has been very smart all season and has been fair. If Vukota was suspended by the coach for breaking team rules he probably deserved it. We don't know why Vukota was less physical throughout the season. Remember, he had a serious injury last year and maybe he nursing an injury this year. Let's not blame the coach for Mick's behavior on and off the ice. Bob's the coach. If he doesn't like your attitude, your effort, or your behavior he has the autority to bench you. If Bob is not allowed to post his personal comments then none of us should be allowed to post ours. Besides, do you really think having Vukota on the ice that last game would've made a difference? I'm as big a fan as anyone else but we win as a team, we lose as a team. >>> mkarling@earthlink.net 05/09/2000 10:40:41 PM >>> > Date: Tue, 09 May 2000 09:11:47 -0600 > From: "Bob Bourne" > Subject: [UG] Re: utah-grizzlies-digest V1 #116 > > Mick Vukota was suspended indefinitely for missing a teak bus in houston the > previous day, therefore showing absolutely no respect for his teammates or for > our organization. It is scary how quickly a crowd can turn on an individual. Sounds like Mr. Bourne has some serious hostility toward Mick I wonder why at the beginning of the season there was a HUGE selling point about having Vukota and Penn as the "Enforcers" of the team, and now Mick is constantly harassed for being too physical? Mick was suspended after the first home game. There were several other individuals fighting on the ice that night, why was he the only one that was suspended? Has he ever been forgiven for that incident? I Think NOT! Especially toward the second half of the season Mick was less and less physical and was doing more and more negotiating with the refs on apparent unfair calls. It seemed like he was trying to do what his coach wanted. It appears as though he does a lot to support his team. Maybe he is as confused as some of us as to what his "coach" wants. Does he want an Enforcer or what? Mick has always been great to his fans, which is more than I can say for some of the other players, (Penn) for instance. All of you that were so quick to agree that Mick should be benched, should be ashamed of yourself! It was petty for Mr. Bourne to add his personal comments to the explanation, and even more petty for all of you to convict Mick when you have no idea what his side of the story is.
