Barrie scored two power-play goals in the second period, then watched an all-out brawl between the teams at the end of his first IHL game Wednesday at Kemper Arena. Barrie's offensive punch, combined with one of the best performances of the season from goalie Rick Tabaracci, put a postgame smile on Utah Coach Bob Bourne's face for the first time in weeks. "What a big, big turnaround," Bourne said after his team posted its second shutout of the season, one night after a 7-4 loss to the same Blades. "We knew [Barrie] was skilled, and he wasted little time showing us what he has. I could tell Tabby was focused with some big saves early in the game." Bourne and the Grizzlies (12-10-2) knew Tabaracci had a performance like Wednesday's in him, but the veteran goalie has struggled lately to get past the first 10 minutes of a game without giving up a goal. After three years of playing in Europe, Barrie decided it was time to make another effort at his dream of playing in the NHL -- and signed a 25-game contract with the Grizzlies, affiliated with the Dallas Stars. "I was playing in the Buffalo organization and I got a bad taste," he said. "I went to Europe. I'm older now and I decided to make one more crack at it." Barrie's first goal came 78 seconds into the second period during a Utah power play. Blades enforcer Dody Wood was sitting in the penalty box for trying to draw Grizzlies defenseman John Erskine into a fight late in the first period. Erskine kept his gloves on and ignored Wood, who was called for a delay of game. Barrie scored again four minutes later during another power play. Utah finished with two power-play goals in seven opportunities. "I don't think they are expecting two goals from me every night," Barrie said. "I just want to contribute any way I can." He gets two more chances this week as Utah travels to Winnipeg for games Friday and Saturday. Tabaracci was perfect Wednesday, making 28 saves before he was ejected from the game for leaving the crease to help a teammate during the brouhaha. Utah was short-handed when Wood started getting chippy with Grizzlies center Gavin Morgan. With defenseman Alan Letang watching from the penalty box, the brawl broke out. Utah defenseman Geno Tsybouk was being double-pummeled when Tabaracci jumped into the action, grabbing Kansas City forward Brad Leeb, brother of Utah center Greg Leeb. "As soon as their last guy got involved, I had to react," Tabaracci said. "We were outnumbered. "It's a shame that the Kansas City coaching staff would have those guys out there on a power play at the end of the game." Bourne said he expected his goalie to defend his teammate. "I know what he was trying to do and I don't condone it," Bourne said. "I'm disappointed, but he almost had to do it." Referee Michael Langlois ejected Tabaracci and two Kansas City players and handed out 114 penalty minutes. Mike Bales replaced Tabaracci and made two saves to share the shutout. There is no NHL bylaw which would prevent an owner from playing. However, Lemieux, 35, is expected to resign his position as the Penguins' Governor, meaning he will not vote on league issues. But he will continue to be involved in the team's day-to-day business operations. Penguins spokesperson Tom McMillan declined to comment but said the team is "planning a major announcement soon." Difficult comebacks aren't out of character for Lemieux: this is man who once scored a goal a few hours after completing his radiation therapy treatment for Hodgkin's disease. Considered to be among the top four players in NHL history, Lemieux retired after winning the NHL scoring championship in 1996-97. At that point, Lemieux was clearly weary from emotional and physically draining battles he had waged over the years to come back from Hodgkin's disease and major back injuries. Earlier, Lemieux had also said he didn't enjoy hockey as much because there was too much hooking, holding and obstruction. But early this season, in an interview with USA TODAY, Lemieux said he had been very impressed with how rules changes had brought back more offensive flow to NHL games. Privately, Lemieux has also told friends he is very excited about the Penguins' team right now and views them as a contender. One of the team's pressing needs is a skilled center. Lemieux retired with 613 goals and 1,494 points in 745 games. Finally, Lemieux has been feeling great, and the time away from the game has given his body an opportunity to re-energize itself. Watching the game very closely for the past two years, Lemieux has a strong sense that he can still play. Lemieux has seriously been training with weights and exercise apparatus since November and has been skating for approximately two weeks. No date has been set for his return, although it seems unlikely he could come back before Christmas time. Presumably, the Lemieux situation will be spelled out to the Board of Governors at meetings in Palm Beach, Fla. Monday and Tuesday. The notion of a superstar coming back to play after a lengthy absence isn't unprecedented: Gordie Howe retired from the Detroit Red Wings at age 43, and then came back at 45 to play in the World Hockey Association. Guy Lafleur retired at age 34 from the Montreal Canadiens in 1985 and came back at 37 to play for the New York Rangers.
