GRIZZLIES NOTES: Is Tech Turning Goons Into Geeks? Friday, December 8, 2000 BY BRETT PRETTYMAN THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE The bus ride from the hotel to the hockey rink used to be a quiet time for the visiting team. But technology has broken the once-sacred silence with the incessant ringing of cellular phones. Players not talking on their phones are playing games on them and yelling out high scores for the rest of the team to try to match. Portable CD players have been replaced by laptop computers with DVD players. Agent phone numbers are stored on Palm Pilots. Utah Grizzlies Coach Bob Bourne says he hasn't had to make rules when it comes to technological gadgets yet, but he will if he must. "It was a really weird training camp. I swear there wasn't one player without a cell phone. At times, there were 10 guys at a time on them," Bourne said. "We haven't had any problems yet, but it really bugs me when on the way to a game the guys are talking with their wives or girlfriends. There is a time and a place for chatting and that is not it." That said, Bourne walks away to take a call on his own cell phone. Five years ago, a few Grizzlies took portable CD players on trips. Former Grizzlies goalie Tommy Salo, now with the Edmonton Oilers of the NHL, was dubbed "Tommy Tetris" because he spent much of the travel time with a Nintendo Gameboy in his hands. Not long ago, players gathered around pay phones in the lobbies of hotels to make calls home. Those days appear to be long gone. After the Brawl While traveling to Winnipeg for games this weekend against the Manitoba Moose, the Grizzlies were still talking about Wednesday's 3-0 victory over the Kansas City Blades. The main topic of conversation, other than the return of Mario Lemieux to the NHL, was the brawl instigated by the Blades with four minutes left to play. Bourne said he doesn't expect suspensions from the altercation. "If there are any repercussions, it better be against them. The Blades started the whole thing," he said. "I don't understand what [K.C. Coach Stan Smyl] was thinking. To do something like that at the end is so premeditated, especially when they had a five-on-four advantage at the time." Bourne called IHL President Doug Moss and Bob McCammon, director of hockey operations, to inquire about the incident, but failed to reach them. Record-Setting Goalies Goalie Mike Bales earned an assist on a power-play goal in Tuesday's 7-4 loss to the Blades, bringing his season point total to four. Bales owns the Utah season and career records for most points by a goalie. Rick Tabaracci picked up 12 penalty minutes for his involvement in Wednesday's brawl. He has 31 penalty minutes with the Grizzlies and broke Mark McArthur's franchise record of 26. © Copyright 2000, The Salt Lake Tribune All material found on Utah OnLine is copyrighted The Salt Lake Tribune and associated news services. The team was surprised to see Gainey checking in for the same flight. Not one person associated with the team knew Gainey had been in Winnipeg to watch the Grizzlies play two games against the Manitoba Moose. As Utah's parent club, the Stars provide the bulk of the Grizzlies roster. Gainey showed up in Kansas City to watch Dallas players assigned to Utah for the first two games of the four-game trip. His appearance may have altered the performance of the players as the Grizzlies fell 7-4 in a horrible defensive effort. The next day, Gainey asked if his being there affected their performance. His answer was that they all wanted to get his attention and most of them figured offense was the way to do it. "Oh, they got my attention," Gainey said. After watching Utah split its games in Kansas City, Gainey said goodbye to the Grizzlies. The players relaxed enough to play two of their best defensive games of the season in Manitoba. Somehow, Gainey remained incognito in Manitoba. He also may have been there scouting John MacLean, a veteran forward assigned to the Moose by the New York Rangers. -- Utah goalie Rick Tabaracci played on the of the best games in recent Grizzlies history with a 51-save performance against the Moose on Friday. Monday, the IHL named him its goalie of the week. Tabaracci, a 13-year veteran assigned to Utah by Dallas, went 2-0 last week with a 1.30 goals-against average and a .966 save percentage. He made 28 saves against the Blades on Wednesday before being ejected from the game late in the third period for leaving the crease during a brawl. Tabaracci said after Friday's game that he finally felt as if he was back in shape after missing games earlier this season with a shoulder injury. Mike Bales, Utah's other goalie, was named goalie of the week for his performance during the first week of the season. -- Utah Coach Bob Bourne will miss games tonight and Wednesday against the Orlando Solar Bears to attend a ceremony in New York staged by Sports Illustrated to recognize the magazine's sportsman of the year for 2000. Former athletes honored by SI have been invited to this year's announcement. Bourne won the award, along with five others, in 1987 for his fund-raising efforts for a school in New York which addressed the needs of children with disabilities. © Copyright 2000, The Salt Lake Tribune [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 13 Dec 2000 10:08:33 -0700 From: "R. Last season, Grizzlies fans made a concerted effort to get him and other Utah players on the IHL All-Star roster. Thursday, Purves was named as the sole Grizzlies representative for this year's game. Coaches did the voting. "It feels good to think that people outside of the organization appreciate the way you play and how you handle yourself on the ice," he said. Last year's all-star squad was picked by fan voting on the Internet. As a result, five Utah players (Rich Parent, Stewart Malgunas, Jeff Sharples, Jarrod Skalde and Purves) were named as starters against the defending champion Houston Aeros. "Either way, it is an honor to be selected," Purves said. "Every year, there are so many other good players who deserve to be on the team." Purves will have to count on the fans to make him a starter. The starting lineup for the Jan. 15 game in Chicago against the reigning IHL champion Wolves will be determined by fan voting on the internet at www.theihl.com. Purves, 32, is making his third consecutive trip to the IHL All-Star Game as a Grizzly and his sixth overall. "I've enjoyed them, and not one will be any better in my mind than the other," he said. "Being named to the team never loses any meaning for me. The further my career goes along, the more I appreciate each opportunity." Purves will not play tonight at Kansas City. The forward has a sore wrist and is giving it some time to heal from games Tuesday and Wednesday against Orlando. He is expected to play at home Saturday against the Manitoba Moose. © Copyright 2000, The Salt Lake Tribune [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Dec 2000 00:24:30 EST From: PUCKFANZZ@aol.com Subject: [UG] Kansas 4 Utah 1 KANSAS CITY, Missouri (Ticker) -- Steve Kariya scored a goal and had three assists as the Kansas City Blades defeated the Utah Grizzlies, 4-1. Bob Bourne is not one of them. The Utah Grizzlies' coach owns four Stanley Cup rings but never wears them. Bourne is more likely to share stories of his two sons as he is to brag about his glory days with the New York Islanders. Buried among Bourne's list of accomplishments as a hockey player -- winning the NHL's Bill Masterson trophy for sportsmanship and leading the Islanders in scoring during the 1983 playoffs -- is the one achievement of which he is most proud. Bourne was one of eight athletes named Sportsman of the Year by Sports Illustrated in 1987. It is the one thing Bourne boasts about during his unlikely career in the NHL. And 13 years later, Bourne still can't believe he earned the same award as Wayne Gretzky, Michael Jordan and his favorite, Muhammad Ali. "It was a lot of fun, but I felt humbled a little bit to be with all those people," Bourne said after attending Sports Illustrated's Sportsman on the Year ceremony last week in New York. Watching Tiger Woods earn this year's honor, Bourne looked around and felt a renewed sense of accomplishment to be sitting with the likes of John Wooden, Dean Smith, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Orel Hershiser. Bourne's reaction after attending the ceremony is similar to the one he had in 1987, when he picked up the magazine and saw his profile along with seven others on the cover of Sports Illustrated. "I have the same reaction today as I did then. 'What the hell am I doing there?' I'm not kidding. It still shocks me," Bourne said. Under the headline "Athletes Who Care" are artist renditions of Bourne; Judi Brown King, then the U.S. record-holder in the 400-meter hurdles; Kip Keino, a two-time Olympic gold medalist in the 1,500 meters; Dale Murphy, an outfielder for the Atlanta Braves who now lives in Highland, Utah; Chip Rives, a Wake Forest fullback; Patty Sheehan, LPGA Tour Player of the Year in 1983; Rory Sparrow, a point guard with the New York Knicks; and Reggie Williams, a linebacker for the Cincinnati Bengals. The athletes earned recognition by raising money for various charities. Bourne's choice was simple. His first son, Jeff, was born with spina bifida. "The entire team was involved in raising money and that is what made it so successful," Bourne said. "I was the go-between for the players and the charities. Because of Jeff, my name came up." The fund-raising began when the owner of a bar the Islanders frequented said he would provide the facility, food and drink for any event the team wanted to stage. "The first year we raised close to $100,000. The guys did an awesome job and really got involved," Bourne said. "We could have done something for charity every day, but hockey got in the way." A lot of the money went to the special school Jeff attended, but few charities were turned away by the hockey players. "Jeff loved that school and I wanted to give them something back for making him so happy," Bourne said. "There was a restricted number of kids who could go there, so we asked how we could increase that number. They said they needed two new rooms. We asked what it would cost and did it." Jeff has since graduated from high school and is attending college. At 46, the award means even more to the man who never expected to play in the NHL or help so many because of it. "All of the sudden I'm realizing how short life really is and how much I appreciate everything that happened to me," Bourne said. "Growing up, I never thought of playing in the NHL and I never thought I would win the Stanley Cup. I understood what I was doing then, but it has even more meaning to me now." Bourne said he likes the fact his achievement in 1987 is coming up again. "A lot of fans look at me as a coach and nothing but. They don't think this guy has a life outside of hockey and that he misses his kids all day every day," Bourne said. "It starts people to thinking that maybe I'm not such a bad guy. I'm not only a coach, but I'm a father and a brother and a son and a friend." Bourne scored 258 goals and 582 points in 964 games over his 14-year career -- numbers he knows would not have earned him Sportsman of Year. "I never would have made it just on athletic ability," he said. "I got it for being an athlete who cares about other people. I got it for a different reason than the others and that's why I'm so proud of it." © Copyright 2000, The Salt Lake Tribune All material found on Utah OnLine is copyrighted The Salt Lake Tribune and associated news services. This frustrates me and I'm sure the players and coach on the lack of execution on the power play. 2) Lack of defense. Taking stupid penalties has to be number one on my list in the last few games. These have been the kind of penalties that you almost expect of a rookie, but it is our veterans that are taking them. There seems to be a lack of discipline when the concentration lapses. How are things going in the locker room? I'm hearing some rather disturbing rumors. I always assume that a rumor is untrue until proven otherwise but the way the team acts on the ice makes me wonder. Then again, maybe I'm looking for things that really aren't there. The lack of defense in front of great goaltending would still be my second concern. Then there's the Verizon powerless play, oy vey! I too am still on the bandwagon but these are some pretty serious problems right now. The point race in the West is too close to be wasting games.
