Borzecki is coming back to the Grizzlies. IHL Honors Goaltender Tabaracci Without goalie Rick Tabaracci, the Utah Grizzlies almost surely would be in last place in the IHL's Western Conference. Instead, the hockey team survived a goal-deprived December with a 6-9 record. Tabaracci went 6-4-1 while allowing 1.89 goals per game and stopping nearly 94 percent of the shots he faced. Tabaracci deserved a better record, but he will have to settle for IHL goalie of the month honors. For his incredible numbers, bolstered by a 51-save performance in a 2-1 win in Manitoba, Tabaracci was named goalie of the month Thursday. While Tabaracci allowed more than two goals just five times during December, his team scored more than two goals in only four of the 15 games the Grizzlies played. Tabaracci had to share a shutout with teammate Mike Bales after he was wrongfully ejected from a game for leaving the crease in a 3-0 win over the Kansas City Blades on Dec. 6. Assigned by Utah's NHL affiliate, the Dallas Stars, Tabaracci gave up just 22 goals on 362 shots. He is fifth among IHL goalies with a 2.40 goals-against average and .922 save percentage. Tabaracci beat out Cincinnati's Corey Hirsch, the man he shared the Utah crease with last year. Hirsch went 10-1 with a 2.26 GAA and .934 save percentage. Tabaracci is the seventh Utah player in six seasons to be named goalie of the month. This is the eighth time Utah has claimed the award; Tommy Salo won twice. The Grizzlies return to action Saturday in Chicago. They will be without defenseman Alan Letang. He is nursing a sore shoulder. Adam Borzecki has been called up from Idaho of the West Coast Hockey League to take his spot. After a game Sunday in Cleveland, Utah returns to the E Center on Tuesday for a rematch against the Lumberjacks. © Copyright 2001, The Salt Lake Tribune All material found on Utah OnLine is copyrighted The Salt Lake Tribune and associated news services. Maybe they should have somebody from the Grizzbee their to help dedicate it. 'Grizzly' a Bear of a Downhill Course Friday, January 5, 2001 BY TOM WHARTON THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE SNOWBASIN -- Standing atop the newly christened "Grizzly" run that will serve as the men's downhill course for the 2002 Winter Olympics, U.S. skier Chad Fleischer seemed confident he could master it. "I'm hoping it's Gentle Ben and I'm Grizzly Adams," said Fleischer, who wears his hair in a spotted leopard style and is one of the world's top speed skiers. The course is named after Old Ephraim, a legendary grizzly bear that wandered northern Utah in the early 1900s. Believed to be Utah's last grizzly, the animal was killed by Frank Clark in 1923. The 9,895-foot-long course may render extinct the medal hopes of quite a few Olympic downhill and super G skiers. With some grades plunging as much as 70 percent, it should present skiers a stiff challenge. "It's a gnarly downhill," said Fleischer. "It will be one to look at for years to come. It shows how beautiful Utah is." Herwig Demschar, the Salt Lake Organizing Committee's director of Alpine skiing and a former coach with the powerhouse Austrian team, said he has visited 80 percent of the world's ski resorts. He ranked the course as one of the top three. Few venues feature the 360-degree views available from the top of the new, log-framed start house on the Mount Allen ridge line at 9,350 feet: Pineview Reservoir and the Ogden Valley to the east and Taylor Canyon, downtown Ogden and the Great Salt Lake to the west (at least on an inversion-free day). Grizzly will be dedicated officially Feb. 24-25 during the 2001 Cafe de Columbia Men's Downhill World Cup, Snowbasin's major Olympic test event. The women's downhill course, called Wildflower, is slightly longer at 10,302 feet, but does not have the steep grades of the men's run. Features of the men's run emphasize the grizzly theme. They include names such as Ephraim's Face, Bear Trap and Hibernation Hole. Snowbasin General Manager Gray Reynolds said Old Ephraim's skull once was sent to the Smithsonian Institute. It has been on display at Utah State University since 1978. Reynolds hopes the skull can be displayed during the Olympics. © Copyright 2001, The Salt Lake Tribune [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 05 Jan 2001 14:35:18 -0700 From: Michael Austin Subject: [UG] Re: [grizzlist] Sim->Utah (?) Now, a second case of bizarre off-ice behavior in less than a year is threatening to revive that nickname. Belfour left the team in Boston on Saturday, flying back to Dallas after arguing with coach Ken Hitchcock over participation in an optional pregame practice. On Sunday, the Stars suspended Belfour indefinitely. "I've spoken to Ed, and at this time he feels he is not ready to join the team," general manager Bob Gainey said in a statement. "We have placed him on suspension as we work toward a resolution." On his way out of town, Belfour -- a free agent after this season -- called Stars captain Derian Hatcher to give his side of the story. Hatcher filled in his teammates, but refused to publicly discuss the details. "I don't want to speak for Eddie, and I don't want to speak for Bob," Hatcher said. On Saturday, Gainey said: "I think the way I view the situation is there was a conflict, which itself was a problem, and the way Ed chose to respond to the problem created another problem. That is the bigger problem. We'll start there and work our way back. He made a choice, and I'd like to give him the opportunity to explain." Coming off a 4-2 loss in Detroit, Hitchcock decided to give Belfour a break and let Marty Turco start Saturday night against the Bruins. Tradition dictated that, as the backup for the day, Belfour be in goal for the morning skate so Turco could save himself for the game. He refused, triggering the blowup between a coach known as demanding and often vocal with his players and a quirky star with whom there was never any indication of friction. In fact, twice in the last month, Hitchcock went with Belfour in games after he'd discussed using Turco. Turco wound up making 33 stops for his first career shutout in a 4-0 victory in Boston. He's likely to be in goal for the last two games of this road trip, Monday night against the New York Rangers and Wednesday night in Atlanta. The Stars also recalled journeyman Rick Tabaracci under emergency conditions from Utah of the International Hockey League. The 35-year-old Belfour came to Dallas four seasons ago with a history of strong regular seasons and mediocre postseasons. He was considered flaky and unreliable under pressure. The Stars made it to the conference finals his first season, but didn't advance. Belfour was rock solid in the 1999 playoffs, winning two triple-overtime games and outdueling goalies Patrick Roy and Dominik Hasek while Dallas win its first Stanley Cup title. Belfour also ended his dubious streak of playing the most postseason games without a championship of any goalie in league history. He was even better last season. Although the Stars lost in the finals to the New Jersey Devils, Belfour was widely credited as the reason Dallas even came that close. Despite this success, Belfour still wasn't getting leaguewide recognition and was left off the All-Star team. And in March, he was arrested for fighting with security guards and police at a Dallas hotel. According to police reports, Belfour spit and kicked at officers, who used pepper spray to subdue him. While being taken to jail, the goaltender offered $100,000 for officers to let him go, then upped it to $1 billion. He pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest and was placed on two years' probation, fined $3,000 and ordered to visit two area high schools to warn about alcohol abuse. He also was enrolled in the NHL's substance-abuse program. He got off to a brilliant start this season, posting six shutouts in the first two months and going 219 minutes without allowing a goal. He's 6-6-1 since that streak ended Nov. 29. He's been solid in those victories, allowing just eight goals with another shutout, but shaky in the losses, yielding 26 goals. His 2.13 goals-against average and .908 save percentage rank sixth in the league. The Grizzlies (18-18-2) were down 3-0 early in the second period, but scored two straight to make it a one-goal game before penalties diminished the chance of a comeback. Utah is 0-16 this season when trailing after two periods and 0-34-2 in the last two seasons when down after 40 minutes. The last time the Grizzlies managed to come from behind and win in the third period was the second game of last season, 118 games overall. The Lumberjacks (19-14-5) broke a three-game losing streak with the victory. The teams meet again Tuesday at the E Center. Utah may be without leading goal scorer Jamie Wright. He left the game after a hard slash from Cleveland's Brett McLean in the third period. No penalty was called on the play, but the Grizzlies may send a copy of the tape to the IHL hoping for a suspension. Sunday's game was the second time Utah has played in Cleveland less than 24 hours after playing another game. Utah defenseman Jeff MacMillan put Utah within two goals 29 seconds after Cleveland's Brian Bonin scored his second of the game early in the second period. David Ling scored his 10th of the season later in the same period to make it a one-goal game. Brady, a center who played for the Grizzlies last season, joined the team after Utah Coach/General Manager Bob Bourne and Chicago GM Kevin Cheveldayoff agreed on a trade after the Grizzlies' 3-2 win in Chicago on Saturday. The Grizzlies sent young center Eric Houde to the defending Turner Cup champion Wolves. Houde, who had two goals and 13 assists in 34 games in Utah, earned an assist in his first game with the Wolves on Sunday. Brady, held scoreless in Cleveland, was sparingly used in Chicago. He had one goal and two points in 24 games with the Wolves. Mike Bales made 39 saves in Chicago Saturday and 43 against the Lumberjacks. Due to the at least temporary departure of goalie Ed Belfour from the Dallas Stars, Bales has become Utah's No. 1 goalie. He moves into the top spot after Dallas, the Grizzlies' NHL affiliate, called up Rick Tabaracci on Saturday to replace Belfour who left the team after an argument with Coach Ken Hitchcock on Saturday. The Stars have suspended Belfour indefinitely as General Manager Bob Gainey works to understand, and possibly resolve, the situation. The Dallas Morning News reported Sunday that Gainey spoke to Belfour by phone late Saturday night and said he would talk Sunday with Hitchcock to discover the reasons for the walkout. A Tuesday meeting is scheduled among Belfour, Hitchcock and GM Bob Gainey. "I think we knew it was going to happen, the question was when it was going to happen," Gainey said after the Stars beat the New York Rangers 2-1 on Monday night. "[Sunday night] I really didn't foresee that it would be 12 or 24 hours later that everything would be in motion. "I thought once we got past the first stage where Ed didn't come to meet the team here that we were going to be in a little bit longer down period." "I spoke to him late [Sunday] night and he sounded much better, much clearer. He feels that he was prepared to start and turn back the other direction and suggested coming to Atlanta." Belfour left the team and returned to Dallas after refusing to take part in Saturday's morning skate. "It's unfortunate," Hitchcock said. "Nobody wins in this situation. Eddie doesn't win, the players don't win, the coaching staff and management don't win." Gainey had imposed a gag order on the players but their silence ended Monday. "Obviously, something happened between Eddie and Hitch that I don't think anyone in this room knew about," said captain Derian Hatcher who spoke to Belfour after his departure. "From what I understand, it's been ongoing." While disputes are not unique, abandonment of teammates is -- especially in hockey, where sticking your nose into trouble to back up teammates is honored and expected. "You learn to deal with it and not allow it to seep into the room," center Mike Modano said. "I think everybody still wants to go out there and play and perform. Once we're on the ice, all that stuff is forgotten about and you try and win the game. The players understand that life goes on." The Stars rallied around 25-year-old Marty Turco -- playing only his 10th career game -- and beat Boston 4-0. Turco followed it up with 37 saves against the Rangers. This was the second off-ice trouble in 10 months for the 35-year-old Belfour, who has tried hard to escape the nickname of "Crazy Eddie" he earned in his younger, wilder days. Last spring, he pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor charge of resisting arrest during a fight at a Dallas hotel and was placed on two years' probation, fined $3,000 and ordered to visit two area high schools to warn about alcohol abuse. He also was enrolled in the NHL's substance-abuse program. Dallas trails first-place San Jose by five points in the Pacific Division. It is possible that if the meeting in Atlanta with Hitchcock and Gainey goes well, Belfour could return to the active roster. "Every team has issues around them," Hitchcock said. "I think what you worry about is not so much what it is between management and players, but how your players react. Our players are fine." The Stars didn't waste a chance against the Rangers, who are winless in eight games (0-6-1-1). "I think we definitely have to stay focused and try to push this off to the side right now," Hatcher said. "Hopefully, everything works out, but at the same token we were all very surprised at what happened." Brett Hull ,who has had his own troubles with Hitchcock, said the team is trying to go on with business as usual, whether Belfour is there or not. "It's up to Bob and Hitch to be the ones to decide what happens," he said. "We'll just come to the rink that day and if he's back putting his gear on, then he's back. If not, we'll just get ready to play."
