Saturday, Feb. 10 7:30pm ET Grand Rapids 3, Utah 1 RECAP GRAND RAPIDS, Michigan (Ticker) -- Marty McSorley racked up 25 penalty minutes in his IHL debut and Derek King had a goal and an assist as the Grand Rapids Griffins defeated the Utah Grizzlies, 3-1. McSorley, the 17-year National Hockey League veteran who was banned from the league for a year after he high-sticked Donald Brashear last February 21, was given a major penalty and two game misconducts for his involvement in a multi-player fight late in the third period. King assisted on a power-play goal by Kip Miller 4:39 into the second period before scoring a shorthanded goal late in the third. Petr Schastlivy also scored a shorthanded goal and Mike Fountain stopped 25 shots to pick up the win as the Griffins snapped their four-game losing streak. Alan Letang scored the lone goal for Utah, which along with Grand Rapids combined for 187 penalty minutes. Chad Alban turned aside 24 shots in the loss -- the Griffins' fourth in a row [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 07:37:31 -0700 From: "Ted Bartkoski" Subject: [UG] Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 07:37:02 -0700 http://espn.go.com/nhl/news/2001/0210/1076837.html [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 17:33:38 -0700 From: "Kerry Sundahl" Subject: [UG] Shmyr? McSorley, suspended for one year after hitting Vancouver's Donald Brashear in the head with a hockey stick, signed with the Griffins early Saturday and played against Utah. McSorley lasted almost until the final two minutes before drawing his first penalty as the best team in the IHL beat the Grizzlies 3-1 in front of 10,226 at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. A big brawl, including goalies Chad Alban and Mike Fountain, broke out with 2:19 left in the game and McSorley dropped his gloves for a fight with rookie Utah defenseman John Erskine. McSorley and eight other players were sent to the locker room before the game ended. McSorley received a double game misconduct. Former Grizzlies center Kip Miller started the scoring, with his first goal since being assigned to Grand Rapids by the Pittsburgh Penguins. The loss broke Utah's (27-26-3) season-high, four- game winning streak and delayed the team's taking over first place in the Western Conference. Grand Rapids (35-12-4) broke a four-game losing streak. McSorley's suspension ends Feb. 21, and the 37-year-old defenseman is hoping to show NHL teams he has not lost his edge. "You have to put the whole experience here in context," McSorley told WOOD-AM radio in Grand Rapids. "You can't compare it to big games like a Game 7 in the conference finals or the Stanley Cup Finals. This is different. I'm here to support the team and help them win and also to get comfortable on the ice again." A Vancouver court found McSorley guilty of assault with a weapon for the slash on Brashear and sentenced him to 18 months probation. McSorley, who then was playing with the Boston Bruins, said he does not have to defend himself for the ugly episode any more. "I know, and hockey people know, my intentions were good. I went out to provoke a fight like I've done a hundred times before," he said. "I play the game as honestly as I can. " The IHL sought approval from the NHL before allowing McSorley to sign with the Griffins. "I felt that McSorley's sincere desire to continue his hockey career, coupled with his genuine interest in playing for the Griffins warranted the ruling," IHL President and CEO Doug Moss said. Grizzlies Coach Bob Bourne and assistant Craig Ludwig were not surprised by McSorley's return, but wondered how the veteran could help the league-leading Griffins. "What Marty did was wrong, but I have seen worse things," Ludwig said. "Someone has given him a chance to come back and play and he should take it. This shows how much he loves the game. To go through what he did, the punishment and what everybody said about him. It takes a lot of courage to do what he is doing." McSorley has no problems recognizing his role with the Griffins, no matter how short his time is in Grand Rapids. "People like to put the tag 'goon' on you or whatever. I'm not scared to go fight," he said. "If the game is chippy and I get into a scrap and it settles things down, then that's good. I just don't want the needless fight." McSorley, known most for his role of "bodyguard" to Wayne Gretzky in Edmonton and Los Angeles, also played for Pittsburgh, San Jose and the New York Rangers during the 17- year career. He accumulated 3,381 penalty minutes. The Grizzlies head to Chicago for an important Western Conference game today (3 p.m. MST, KWUN-AM 1230) against the Wolves. I can't believe we have come back from 4th in the Conference two weeks ago to 1st!!! Of course, this doesn't take into account the fact that we have several games in hand over our Western opponents or the fact that our Conference is pretty packed in the standings. Once you know what success feels like most of the time you work harder to stay in that place. Hopfully that reigns true for the Grizz. We'll definitely need to step it up and keep it up if we intend to stay here. It seems that our guys are finally getting into their scoring groove. I made a comment earlier about Bales and his awesome performance lately but it looks like Leeb has a good shot at Player of the Week also! According to the website Leeb is 5-4-9 in the last 6 games. David Ling, Jamie Wright, and Brad Lauer all have point streaks going as well. Hopefully we can keep that up. I've also been very impressed with Steve Gainey over the past month. At the first of the season I wondered if Daddy's influence was what was keeping him in the IHL but it looks like he's really improved all-around and does deserve to be here. The number of "unnoticeables" (players you don't notice when they're on the ice, scratched, injured, etc) is decreasing on this team. You know, it seems like this team has really tried to turn around since Neil Brady came here. It's only been in the past month or so that I've noticed it (which is about how long he's been with us). From a fan's perspective, Neil really brings a lot of character and drive to the team. They seem to be playing for a different reason. I don't care if Neil goes scoreless the rest of the season. He's obviously done something good in the locker room. Matthew, it seems that somewhere a while ago I heard or read a blurb about how it appears that the East is dominating the West in the standings, but actually the West had a better record when playing Eastern Conference teams. Is there a place where we can look up that particular statistic or, in all of your spare time, can you update us? I'm curious and at a glance couldn't find anything at theihl.com.
