The Griffins are excited about adding Marty McSorley to their roster. Aubrey=
=20
Washington/Allsport=20
GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) -- Marty McSorley, suspended by the NHL since last=20
year for hitting Vancouver's Donald Brashear in the head with his stick, has=20
signed to play with a Michigan minor-league team.=20
McSorley, who knocked Brashear unconscious while playing for the Boston Bruins
, is eligible to return to the NHL on Feb. 21. He was convicted in a Can=
adian=20
court of assault with a weapon and given a conditional discharge, meaning he=
=20
would have no criminal record.=20
McSorley, 37, has played 17 seasons in the NHL. He won two Stanley Cups with=
=20
Edmonton in 1987 and 1988.=20
The team he signed with, the Grand Rapids Griffins, is the top farm team of=20
the NHL's Ottawa Senators and is first overall in the International Hockey=20
League. The Senators had been rumored to have interest McSorley but would=20
have to sign him to an NHL contract if they plan to call him up after Feb.=20
21.=20
Known throughout the league as a tough defenseman, McSorley is No. 3 on the=20
league's all-time list for career penalty minutes.=20
"We're very excited to be able to add a player of Marty's caliber to our=20
team, especially at this stage of the season," said Griffins general manager=
=20
Bob McNamara in a written statement.=20
The terms of the contract were not disclosed.=20
The signing comes a few days after a ruling by the International Ice Hockey=20
Federation that all but squashed McSorley's chances to play for the London=20
Knights of the British Superleague, where his brother Chris McSorley is head=
=20
coach and general manager.=20
The IIHF said Wednesday that it wouldn't issue McSorley a transfer card,=20
which is needed to play in Europe, until a meeting March 5 by its=20
disciplinary committee.=20
