The encouraging words came when the Dallas Stars general manager announced that the NHL club was taking over hockey operations for the minor league team in June. Gainey proved he meant it Tuesday by signing veteran defenseman Greg Hawgood and forwards Jon Sim and Gavin Morgan. Dallas offered one-year deals to Morgan and Sim and gave Hawgood a two-year contract. Morgan, 25, proved he belonged at the top level of minor league hockey last season with the Grizzlies. The center's gritty attitude got him matched up against the top lines on opposing teams. Morgan was a favorite among Grizzlies fans because he was one of the few players who spent time at off-ice functions. Assuming he doesn't make the roster in Dallas, Morgan will help the Grizzlies maintain an identity with fans as the Stars take over hockey operations. Sim was the only Utah player to net a hat trick last season and finished with 16 goals and 29 points in 39 games with the Grizzlies. Sim, 24, also had three assists in 15 games with the Stars. {PRIVATE} Advertisement Hawgood, if he ends up in Utah, will provide a key factor the Grizzlies sorely missed last season: a big shot from the blue line on power plays and an offensive defenseman. Hawgood stands a fair chance at earning a spot on the Dallas roster, but his knack for contributing offensively would help Utah as it begins its first season in the AHL. Perhaps more importantly is the possible addition of a veteran player to help teach the young Dallas prospects what professional hockey is all about. John Purves, last year's team captain and the only player provided by the Grizzlies franchise, will undoubtedly enjoy the company of a veteran player. Hawgood, 32, is in his 14th season and will play for his eighth NHL team if he appears in a Stars uniform. He has 60 goals and 224 points in 472 NHL games. He played in 16 games with the Vancouver Canucks last season, but spent the majority of the year in Kansas City of the IHL. Hawgood, who signed a two-year deal, played for current Dallas coach Ken Hitchcock and Grizzlies coach Don Hay during his junior career with the Kamloops Blazers in the mid- 1980s. He was named the IHL's outstanding defenseman after scoring 85 points in 78 games with the Las Vegas Thunder in the 1995-96 season. The Grizzlies signed Hawgood to a minor league contract for the 1996-97 season, but he remained with the NHL's San Jose Sharks the entire year. Coaching Connections: Gord Dineen, team captain of the back- to-back Turner Cup champion Grizzlies, was named as head coach of the Macon Whoopee of the ECHL Tuesday. He beat out Danton Cole, another former Grizzly, for the job. After being shipped to the Chicago Wolves at the IHL trade deadline two years ago, Dineen went on to win his third championship. Dineen, one of the most popular players in Grizzlies franchise history, was on the coaching staff with Louisville of the AHL last season. Bob Bourne has encountered some stiff competition from a friendly foe in his pursuit for the assistant coaching job with the Florida Panthers of the NHL. Bourne, who coached the Grizzlies last season, is a leading candidate along with another former Utah coach, Butch Goring. Besides serving as coaches in Utah, Bourne and Goring were also linemates with the four-time Stanley Cup champion New York Islanders in the early 1980s. Current Florida coach Duane Sutter was also on those Islanders teams and is friends with both of the candidates. Now, Utah Grizzlies fans will wait to see which players fail to make the NHL team. Wednesday's signings raised the Stars' total to 15 this summer. Six of those players are virtually guaranteed spots on the NHL roster. The others will be fighting for spots on the bench. Six players are returning from last year's Utah team and five will come from the Florida Panthers. "We are done," said Stars assistant general manager Doug Armstrong. "Now, we just have to wait for camp to start and decide who will stay in Dallas and who will go to Utah." The Stars were busy, picking up several free agents sure to help the team return to the Stanley Cup playoffs. Dallas was also active in signing and trading for fringe players -- those close to making their roster, but more likely to end up with its affiliate in Utah. Two players particularly could help the Grizzlies if they fail to make the team in Dallas. The Stars expect big things from Finnish center Niko Kapanen, who won a silver medal at the 2001 World Hockey Championships. Kapanen, 23, was drafted by Dallas in 1998 and has been playing in Europe. The possible addition of NHL veteran Greg Hawgood would be a boost to the Utah defense, which will bring back Mark Wotton, Jeff Macmillan and John Erskine. Ott, the Stars' first-round draft choice in last year's draft, will return to the Windsor Spitfires of the junior Ontario Hockey League if he doesn't crack the Dallas roster. Ott, 18, totaled 50 goals and 87 points last season with the Spitfires. Utah fans likely won't see Ott until next season. Bacashihua, Dallas' first-round draft choice this year, could end playing in Utah this fall. The 18-year-old goalie played for the Chicago Freeze of the junior North American hockey league last season. He was 24-14-10 in 39 games with a 3.23 goals-against average and a .900 save percentage. Ott and Bacashihua will report to Stars training camp in September. The Grizzlies will start practicing when the first batch of players is sent from the Stars in late September. Offseason Timeline Summer transactions for the Dallas Stars, which will affect the Utah Grizzlies' roster: June 5: Signed center Jeff Bateman to a three-year contract.
