Flaherty is hoping the Grizzlies will bring out the best in him again, if he's assigned to the AHL team when the 2001-02 hockey season starts in October. Flaherty's return seems almost certain. The Florida Panthers of the NHL signed him over the summer as a third goalie. Florida, which will be sending five or six players to Utah, already has a proven No. 1 goalie in former Salt Lake Golden Eagles star Trevor Kidd and an up-and-coming player in Robert Luongo. "I had no idea where I might end up when I agreed to the contact with Florida. If I had a place to pick it would be Utah," Flaherty said from his home in British Columbia. "If the Panthers don't make a goalie trade, I'm pretty sure I will be there." The Dallas Stars are Utah's NHL parent club and are responsible for providing the bulk of the players. Dallas would logically want one of its goalies as No. 1 in Utah, but with the Stars' No. 3 goalie, Rick Tabaracci, out with a groin injury until at least December, Flaherty would be the No. 1 Grizzlies goalie. The return would bring back two fond memories for Flaherty. His first child was born in Salt Lake and his play here during the 1997-98 season was phenomenal. "Flats," as he is known, went 16-5-3 with the Grizzlies while allowing 1.79 goals per game and posting a .936 save percentage. He had three shutouts with the Grizzlies and was named IHL goalie of the month. Flaherty's amazing numbers in Utah fell one game short of the IHL record book. He only played in 24 IHL games that year; the league requirement was 25. The New York Islanders, then Utah's NHL parent club, called up Flaherty for good on Jan. 7, 1998. He ended up going 4-4-3 with the Islanders with a 1.99 GAA and a .926 save percentage. Flaherty had four shutouts, all against the Tampa Bay Lightning. Many things are different since Flaherty's days in Utah. The Grizzlies are affiliated with two different NHL teams and they are playing in another league. But perhaps the most important change to Flaherty is the absence of defenseman Jeff Sharples on the Utah roster. Flaherty and Sharples grew up together in the small British Columbia town of Terrace. They were reunited during that 1997- 98 season in Utah. Playing professionally together seemed to be a big boost to both of them. "We might have to pull him out of retirement," Flaherty said of his friend, who is now living in Las Vegas and working toward a commercial pilot's license. bpretty@sltrib.com Wade Flaherty's Career Season Team League Record GAA Save 1989-90 Greensboro Monarchs ECHL 12-9-1 4.40 .891 1990-91 Kansas City Blades IHL 16-31-4 4.49 NA 1991-92 San Jose Sharks NHL 0-3-0 4.38 .892 1991-92 Kansas City Blades IHL 26-14-3 3.23 .893 1992-93 San Jose Sharks NHL 0-1-0 5.00 .891 1992-93 Kansas City Blades IHL 34-19-7 3.21 .888 1993-94 Kansas City Blades IHL 32-19-9 3.40 .896 1994-95 San Jose Sharks NHL 5-6-1 3.10 .903 1995-96 San Jose Sharks NHL 3-12-1 4.85 .866 1996-97 Kentucky T-Blades AHL 8-6-2 3.14 .910 1996-97 San Jose Sharks NHL 2-4-0 5.18 .847 1997-98 Utah Grizzlies IHL 16-5-3 1.79 .936 1997-98 New York Islanders NHL 4-4-3 1.99 .926 1998-99 New York Islanders NHL 5-11-2 3.03 .892 1998-99 Lowell Lock Monsters AHL 1-3-1 3.15 .903 1999-00 New York Islanders NHL 0-1-1 2.31 .914 2000-01 New York Islanders NHL 6-10-0 3.30 .881 2000-01 Tampa Bay Lightning NHL 0-2-0 [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2001 17:06:36 -0600 From: "Ted Bartkoski" Subject: [UG] Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2001 17:06:54 -0600 Morgan Fights Onto Roster Tuesday, September 11, 2001 {BY BRETT PRETTYMAN THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE Like every young boy in Canada, Gavin Morgan dreamed of playing in the NHL one day. Unlike most other boys, Morgan was willing to take the long road to get there. Determination and desire have paid off for the native of Scarborough, Ontario. Today, his name is on a roster with the likes of Mike Modano, Joe Nieuwendyk, Pierre Turgeon, Derian Hatcher, Sergei Zubov and Ed Belfour. Gavin Morgan is a Dallas Star. Morgan and 53 others are in Dallas for the opening of the Stars' 2001-02 training camp. Morgan was never drafted after his college career at the University of Denver ended in 1999. Determined to keep his dream alive, Morgan tried out for and earned a spot with the Idaho Steelheads of the West Coast Hockey League, two steps below the NHL. Morgan had a good season with Idaho, but it was his gritty style of play that drew the attention of then-Utah Grizzlies coach Bob Bourne. Morgan joined the Grizzlies for 10 games and scored a playoff goal. Morgan was one of the first players signed by Bourne for the 2000-01 season. Utah had just started a new affiliation with Dallas and once again, Morgan gained the attention of the people who matter the most. Morgan was the only free agent from last season's Utah roster to be signed by the Stars for the upcoming season. "It is really gratifying to be recognized for all the hard work," Morgan said. "I'm just looking to get a chance to show Dallas I can play in the NHL. I feel fortunate that the Stars are even giving me the opportunity." If he doesn't land a spot on the Dallas roster, Morgan has no qualms about returning to Utah. "Hopefully, with a enough good luck, I won't come back to Utah," he said. "But I want to be a Grizzly if I can't be a Star. I'll play my best no matter where I end up." Dallas Stars 2001-02 Training Camp Roster LEFT WINGS No. Player Ht Wt D.O.B.
