Hay studied each potential Utah player for strengths and weaknesses. He even toyed with possible line combinations, but he was also busy learning the Dallas system of hockey. Perhaps even more important than that, Hay was getting to know his assistant coach, trainer, equipment manager and the powers that be in Dallas. "Training camp has been a good time for me to get to know the guys I will be working with so closely in the coming months," Hay said. No working relationship is more important to Hay than the one with assistant coach Bob Bassen. "It is imperative that we understand each other and our philosophies," he said. "It is a little different for Bob. Making the step from a player to a coach is a big one. You have to learn to worry about a lot of players instead of just one." Hay and Bassen are also learning the hierarchy of the Stars. "We want to be able to use the same type of vocabulary and stress the same things as they do in Dallas, so when our players are called up, they are comfortable," he said. One relationship Hay does not need much work on is with Dallas coach Ken Hitchcock. In 1985, Hitchcock invited Hay to make his coaching debut as an assistant with Kamloops of the [junior] Western Hockey League. "I worked with him for five years and I have a lot of respect for him and the way he coaches," Hay said. "He is person you feel comfortable around." Hay says he does not expect the Dallas system of defense first to change after offseason transactions brought in a handful of offensively skilled players. "Ken isn't going to change his style. He will keep with the Dallas philosophy; they have just added, speed, skills and grit to the equation." Utah Bound Hay says the bulk of players sent to Utah by Dallas and Florida will have to turn some heads to make the Grizzlies' roster. "There was no surprise to any of them about being sent down," he said. "They are coming to Salt Lake to compete for a position on the team, and they will have to earn it." Dallas assigned forwards Jeff Bateman, Gregor Baumgartner, Justin Cox and Brett Draney, along with defensemen Derek Holland, Stephen Moon, Mark Wotton and Dan Jancevski. Florida sent forward Sean O'Connor and defenseman Paul Elliot. They too will have to earn a spot on the roster or be sent down to a lower league. The lone surprise was Wotton. A nine-year-veteran, Wotton spent last season in Utah and was one of the most consistent players on the roster. He is a candidate to be named team captain. The Panthers sent goalie Wade Flaherty to Utah on Saturday. Flaherty returns to the team where he had one of his best seasons. He is expected to be the No. 1 goalie with Rick Tabaracci out until January recovering from groin surgery. The Utah camp will open Monday with physicals. Players will hit the ice for practice on Wednesday, and an intrasquad game will take place Saturday at Acord Arena in West Valley City. Tickets for the 7 p.m. game are $5 at the Grizzlies office in the E Center. bpretty@sltrib.com UTAH GRIZZLIES TRAINING CAMP ROSTER {PRIVATE} Player 2000-01 Team GOALIES Chad Alban Utah-IHL Rick Tabaracci Utah-IHL Brent Belecki Asheville-UHL Trevor Koenig San Diego-WCHL Lionel Jean-Francois Acadie-QMJHL Wade Flaherty N.Y./Tampa-NHL Kory Cooper Kalamazoo-UHL DEFENSEMEN Dan Jancevski London-OHL Mark Wotton Utah-IHL Derek Holland Lubbock-WPHL Steve Moon Merrimack-H-EAST Paul Elliot Kamloops-WHL Tyler Fleck Oklahoma-CHL David Kuldeka Czech Republic Clint Cabana Fort Worth-WPHL Mike Garrow Syracuse-AHL John Erskine Utah-IHL Jeff MacMillan Utah-IHL Brad Ference Florida-NHL Kyle Rossiter Louisville-AHL Tomas Platek Poland Greg Hawgood Vancouver-NHL LEFT WINGS Bret Draney M.Hat-WHL Gregor Baumgartner Utah-IHL Jared Dumba Okla.-CHL Colin Kobza N.A. The minor-league hockey team has been carried on a Citadel station all seven years it has been in Utah. The Grizzlies have not yet announced a complete television schedule, but the Oct. 19 game at the E Center against Houston will be carried on Fox Sports Rocky Mountain. Game Rescheduled: The Grizzlies' home game scheduled for Nov. 21 against the Milwaukee Admirals has been moved to Oct. 15. The game was changed to make way for a Rod Stewart concert on Nov. 21 at the E Center, but the entertainer canceled the appearance. Three-Way Affiliation: The Dallas Stars of the NHL announced a new minor-league affiliation with the Fort Worth Brahmas of the Central Hockey League last week. Dallas will maintain Utah as its primary affiliation and use Fort Worth for developing its players not quite ready to be on step from the NHL. "Now, we have another option for any of our contracted players not quite ready for the step to Salt Lake," Utah coach Don Hay said. "We will look at each individual differently and what will be the best for their development." Hay said having the affiliation with the Brahmas will also make it easy for him to make a call up due to injury or NHL promotion. Andy Moog, a former Dallas goalie, is team president and a minority owner of the Brahmas. The competition ended in June when the International Hockey League announced it was ceasing operations and that the strongest six of its franchises were going to be absorbed by the American Hockey League. Some claimed that minor league hockey in North America had been dealt a severe blow and that more trouble loomed. Nothing could be further from the truth. "There is a bit of a sad feeling about losing the IHL for all the players who spent time in the league. We all have some incredible memories of playing in the 'I' and unfortunately, some of those team have gone by the wayside," said Chicago Wolves General Manager Kevin Cheveldayoff, who in addition to playing in the IHL, was part of three Turner Cup championship teams as a coach or general manager. "But, at the end of the day, this is the best thing that ever happened for hockey." As the AHL prepares for its 66th season, AHL President and CEO Dave Andrews is proud to be the only link for players and fans to the NHL. "We saw the opportunity to take the AHL to a level we hadn't ever considered before. To be not only the dominant league for player development, but the only senior development league," Andrews said. "In a nutshell, we strengthened our ownership base, strengthened the base of our teams and created the best opportunity for all the best young players outside of the NHL to compete in one league." With the 2001-02 AHL season just around the corner, the six former IHL teams - Grand Rapids, Milwaukee, Manitoba, Houston, Utah and Chicago - are preparing for their debut. Related Links - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- AHL realignment announced AHL changes playoff format AHL unveils new trophies Talk about the AHL In addition to adjusting to a new league, Houston, Manitoba and Chicago are learning the operations of new affiliations with NHL teams in Minnesota, Vancouver and Atlanta, respectively. Grand Rapids, Milwaukee and Utah will continue their NHL relationships with Ottawa, Nashville and Dallas, respectively. As the teams prepare for their first taste of the AHL, this season may feel very much like last season for five of the former IHL franchises. Grand Rapids, Milwaukee, Chicago, Houston and Utah have been placed in the West Division of the Western Conference and will play each other 12 times each. All the former IHL teams are just happy to be playing this season, unlike last year's Turner Cup champion Orlando Solar Bears, but Manitoba is perhaps most pleased with the league change. The Moose are in the Canadian Division of the Eastern Conference and will enjoy a schedule full of games against teams from their own country. The team has already equaled last year's season ticket sales and the city is paying the most attention it has to hockey since the NHL's Winnipeg Jets left town. "We will be playing half of our games against Canadian-based teams and that is certainly a change from last year, but fans are also excited about the players they will be seeing," said Manitoba President and GM Randy Carlyle. "We are selling the fact that fans will be able to watch future NHL players competing for jobs. People can come see the baby Maple Leafs, the junior Canadiens and the baby Flames. Those are the kind of teams hockey fans in Canada are familiar with." IHL fans in Kansas City, Detroit, Cincinnati, Orlando and Cleveland lost their teams when the league folded, but the AHL only had enough room for the six strongest franchises. The AHL already has a team in Cincinnati and another AHL franchise was relocated to Cleveland from Kentucky. Daniel DeVos, owner of the Grand Rapids (Mich.) Griffins, says his team would have been operational this season in some fashion, but he appreciates how quickly the AHL was able to make things happen. "It would have been very interesting if the AHL didn't move so fast for us," DeVos said. "It has been a very smooth transition for us; the whole relationship has been very smooth. Everything has been much better than I ever could have anticipated. There were virtually no bumps along the road. We feel like we have been in the AHL for years already." The AHL will open with 27 teams and in nine new cities this season. With three inactive franchises, the league is ready to provide all 30 NHL teams their own affiliations and expect the league to continue to head west. Andrews says Utah may not be on an AHL island for long. "Our growth over the summer certainly creates the opportunity for us to move more into the West; that is not something we had in the past," Andrews said. "I expect the relocation of our three inactive teams will come in the West within the next couple of years. We have expanded our footprint to a point where almost any city can now look at becoming a member of the AHL." League officials, players and fans will no longer have to wonder which minor league champion is truly the best. "We are now all playing under the same rules for one cup, that is very exciting. When you are the champions, you are the champions. No one can say the AHL is better or the IHL is the better. There will be only one team that can claim they are the best team in minor league hockey," Cheveldayoff said. The camp ends with a scrimmage Saturday. (Leah Hogsten/The Salt Lake Tribune) BY BRETT PRETTYMAN THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE WEST VALLEY CITY -- Utah Grizzlies officials were not exaggerating when they said this year's hockey team was going to be young. Four of the 25 players on the ice for the first day of training camp Wednesday at the Acord Ice Center could return to their junior hockey teams in Canada if they don't make the AHL team in Utah. A fifth is still on his way to the Grizzlies' camp. The Dallas Stars, Utah's NHL parent club, sent Justin Cox, Bret Draney, Jeff Bateman and Dan Jancevski -- all 20-years old -- to the Grizzlies camp after cutting them last week. Shaun O'Connor, one of four players sent by Florida of the NHL, is another young skater who could return to his junior team. The Utah training camp is important for the NHL chances of the young players. "I'm doing everything I can to impress the staff during my time here," said Cox, who would return to the Prince George (British Columbia) Cougars of the Western Hockey League. Cox attended his second Dallas training camp this year and feels like he is ready for the step from junior hockey to the pros. "To be able to play with guys like Mike Modano and Pierre Turgeon is a real eye-opener. I realize how hard I have to work to get to the level they are at," he said. "I'm optimistic [about playing in the pros] and I think I'm prepared and ready to go on a daily basis." The young players from Dallas appeared to impress Utah coach Don Hay on Wednesday. "They did a good job of being first in line and demonstrating the drills we learned in Dallas well," Hay said. "They are only 20- years old and they are stepping up and showing me they have the hockey sense to play at this level." Hay said he told the players they were being evaluated on skill level, hockey sense and competitive drive. Cuts will not be made until after the intrasquad game Saturday at the Acord Center (7 p.m.). "We want to have a good look at them. After three practice days and a game, we should have a good indication of the guys that can play and those that can't," Hay said. Hay said he was pleased with the first day of practice, perhaps the most intense training camp practice since the Grizzlies moved to Utah seven years ago. Kyle Rossiter, a defenseman sent to Utah by the Panthers, caught Hay's attention. He also appreciated the effort of veteran forward John Purves. Last year's team captain is the only player on the team with a Grizzlies contract. The others have NHL deals with Dallas or Florida. Purves did not attend an NHL camp and has been working to rehabilitate the shoulder and wrist he had surgery on during the summer. Although he likely will not make the first road trip of the season, Purves said he hopes to be ready for the home opener Oct. 13. Reinforcements Dallas assigned goalie Chad Alban; defensemen Greg Hawgood and Dan Jancevski and forwards Gavin Morgan, Jim Montgomery and Steve Gainey to the Grizzlies late Tuesday. Hay said players assigned by the Stars and Panthers would show up at various times and a few may play in the intrasquad game Saturday. Not all the players assigned may end up here. The NHL's waiver draft is Friday. Dallas did not protect the following players from being picked up by another NHL team: forwards: Benoit Hogue, Cameron Mann, Jim Montgomery, Jon Sim and Kirk Muller; defensemen: Greg Hawgood and Mark Wotton; and goalie Rick Tabaracci. Florida's Wade Flaherty, expected to be Utah's No. 1 goalie, is also unprotected. bpretty@sltrib.com [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2001 19:13:27 -0500 From: "cj" Subject: Re: [UG] Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2001 07:50:09 -0600 well, that busted that bubble!!! cj - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ted Bartkoski" To: Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2001 8:50 AM Subject: [UG] Date: Thu, 27 Sep 2001 07:50:09 -0600 > Youngsters Pepper Utah Training Roster Thursday, September 27, 2001 > > Utah Grizzlies hockey players watch drills along with new head coach Don > Hay, center, during training camp Wednesday.
