Not only d= id they=20 claim their fifth straight win with a 4-3 decision over Houston in the E=20 Center, the Grizz also extended a seasonlong string of games with a=20 power-play goal to seven. "I think we're doing a lot of good things," said Utah coach Don Hay.=20 "When you do those little things that help you win, they lead to little=20 successes all over the ice." Streak is the word for the AHL's Western Division frontrunners. Utah=20 (6-1-0) holds a three-point lead over second-place Chicago and is 4-0-0 at=20 home. The Grizz have also managed to whet fans' appetites. By tallying at=20 least four goals in each contest, they've earned those in attendance free=20 hamburgers as part of a promotion. That, however, is not all, folks. Defenseman Greg Hawgood, who Hay=20 credits for quarterbacking a power play that entered the game with a 47=20 percent success rate at home, has now tallied a point in four straight games= .=20 He was credited with an assist when John Purves continued Utah's=20 man-advantage success with a goal at 1:29 of the third period. The shot gave the Grizz a 4-0 lead which proved to be enough for Utah=20 to weather three late scores by the visiting Aeros. "We can feel very good about what we're doing," said Purves, who noted= =20 things won't stay this way all season. "But, we can't put too much stock in=20 any streaks or anything right now. We just have to keep pushing." Utah took a 2-0 lead midway through the first period when Jeff=20 MacMillan and Roman Lyashenko netted goals less than two minutes apart. The=20 early outburst, coupled with a score by Kyle Rossiter in the second period,=20 took pressure off Grizz goaltender Chad Alban. He took advantage of it by stopping the first 26 shots Houston sent hi= s=20 way. Alban wound up earning his fourth victory (placing him in a tie for=20 league-high honors), but not before surviving a Houston power-play=20 opportunity that lasted into the final minute of the game. They meet again tonight at 7. =20 [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 20 Oct 2001 10:25:21 EDT From: PUCKFANZZ@aol.com Subject: [UG] Grizz Win 5th in Row Grizz Win 5th in Row Saturday, October 20, 2001 BY BRETT PRETTYMAN THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE WEST VALLEY CITY -- The Utah Grizzlies showed they do not always need an advantage to score Friday, but ended up winning on a power-play goal while holding off the Houston Aeros 4-3 on Friday. The Grizzlies (6-1) extended their winning streak to five, are still undefeated at the E Center and remain tied with Philadelphia at the top of the overall AHL standings. More importantly, at least for the fans at the game, the Grizzlies scored four or more goals at home for the fourth consecutive game, sending fans to the nearest Carl's Jr. for a free hamburger. Goals mean grub for Grizzlies fans. Hockey tickets have been good for a potential of nearly 24,000 hamburgers this month and there still are five games remaining in this homestand. "We can't take too much stock in any streaks right now, we just need to keep pushing," said John Purves, who scored the Grizzlies' fourth goal early in the third period, only to watch the Aeros score three in a row. "We really haven't had a tight game yet. Everything happens for a reason and we have to keep learning from it." With Purves' goal, the Grizzlies have scored on the power play in all seven games this season. Utah leads the AHL, and professional hockey, with a 32.5-percent success rate with the man advantage. Friday, even-strength goals earned Utah the win. Defenseman Jeff MacMillan and Roman Lyashenko scored their first goals of the season in the first period and Kyle Rossiter earned his first at the game's midpoint. When Purves scored, it looked as though the Aeros would go down easy. Not so. Houston (1-2-1) responded with three straight goals and Grizzlies goalie Chad Alban fought off a mad flurry of shots in the last few minutes. bpretty@sltrib.com [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Oct 2001 12:06:27 +0000 From: hckygirl@att.net Subject: [UG] Sat Game Final score of last night's game: Houston 3 Grizz 2 Does anyone remember who the three stars were? - -- Check out the latest Grizz info!!! http://gogrizz.8m.com [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Oct 2001 13:30:27 EDT From: PUCKFANZZ@aol.com Subject: [UG] Aeros Stop Grizz's Streak Aeros Stop Grizz's Streak Sunday, October 21, 2001 BY BRETT PRETTYMAN THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE WEST VALLEY CITY -- Butch Goring used to throw hockey sticks, Bob Bourne preferred water bottles. The new Utah Grizzlies coach goes right to the source. After having an apparent tying goal disallowed in the last four minutes of a 3-2 loss against the Houston Aeros on Saturday at the E Center, Don Hay rolled up his sleeves and went after referee Dean Morton. Assistant coach Bob Bassen chased his boss down the hall towards the referee's room, calling out in vain for him to stop. After a few choice words outside the locked door, Hay took his frustration out on a drape set up as a partition in the hall. He then disappeared into the Utah locker room. Hay's venom was stirred when Morton disallowed a goal by Utah defenseman Greg Hawgood with 3:49 left in the game due to goalie interference by a Grizzlies forward. "I didn't know there was such a thing as light interference," Hawgood said. "It is either a penalty or not. He has called it twice so I guess it exists." Hawgood aptly points out that goalie interference should have resulted in a Utah player sitting in the penalty box for two minutes. But Morton didn't call off the penalty, he just waved off the goal. "There were a few circumstances, maybe one or none of the goals, that would have changed with replay," Hawgood said. Morton made a similar goaltender-interference call in Friday's 4-3 Utah victory. Morton also ruled no goal at the buzzer when Hawgood fired a slapshot the length of the ice that Houston goalie Derek Gustafson attempted to block, but instead directed into his own net. That goal clearly came after the buzzer had sounded, but it just infuriated the Grizzlies, Hay and many of the 5,762 fans all the more. No matter the calls, Utah's five-game winning streak came to an end and the Grizzlies lost for the first time at the E Center in the 2001-02 AHL season. The Grizzlies (6-2) did manage to score one power-play goal on two chances to continue their streak of one man-advantage goal in each game. bpretty@sltrib.com [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Oct 2001 13:33:02 EDT From: PUCKFANZZ@aol.com Subject: [UG] Grizz Report Grizz Report Sunday, October 21, 2001 LOOKING AHEAD Wednesday: Wilkes-Barre at Utah, 7 p.m. Thursday: Wilkes-Barre at Utah, 7 p.m. Saturday: Cleveland at Utah, 7 p.m. All Grizzlies games are broadcast on ESPN Radio (1230-AM) ----- NEWSWORTHY Greg Hawgood played his second game as captain of the Grizzlies, but had his streak of four-straight games with points broken. "I'm the same person whether or not I have the letter on my jersey," Wotton said Monday. "I'm not a real vocal guy. If there is something that needs to be said, I will say it; I will show up for every game and be there in that regard." The soft-spoken Wotton said plenty of other leaders in the Utah dressing room can handle motivation and inspiration. Guys such as Greg Hawgood and Jim Montgomery are always willing to pipe up, leaving Wotton to handle the serious stuff for the Grizzlies, who meet Grand Rapids tonight at the E Center. After 12 games of alternating the "C" among four veteran players, the coaches and players (who actually voted) made Wotton a unanimous choice. "Mark shows that he is sincere and caring about the hockey team and all 21 individuals," Utah coach Don Hay said. "He shows that sincerity to the team every day by helping the young players get better and by pushing the older guys." Wotton, who's having a potential career year offensively, becomes the fourth Grizzlies captain in seven seasons, following Gord Dineen, Micah Aivazoff and John Purves. Purves, the captain last season when Bob Bourne was coaching the Grizzlies, said, "Mark will always take the most sensible approach. He is a guy to get things done. He is the kind of guy you would to go to bat for yourself." Wotton said Purves provided a good example of a captain last season and that he plans to use the other leaders on the team when problems arise. "The lucky thing for me is that there could have been four captains. I learned a lot from John last year and I will draw on him this season. Hawgood and Montgomery are excellent choices as well," he said. "Just because I have a different letter on my jersey than they do won't change how they lead in the dressing room and on the ice." This is not the first time Wotton, who turns 28 on Nov. 16, has been honored by being named captain. He wore the "C" for four years with the Syracuse Crunch and for half a season when the Dallas Stars' affiliate was in Kalamazoo, Mich. bpretty@sltrib.com © Copyright 2001, The Salt Lake Tribune [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001 07:11:58 -0700 From: "Angie Reece" Subject: [UG] Purves Heats Up for Grizz This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - ------=_NextPart_000_001F_01C1675B.7D25D200 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Ian's leaving.
