Jim Montgomery netted his 17th goal with three seconds left in the second for Utah, which improved to 5-2-1 over its last eight games. Wade Flaherty stopped 35 shots in the win, improving his mark to 3-2-0 over his last five games. Steve Martins and Toni Dahlman both scored for Grand Rapids, which has lost two straight following an eight- game unbeaten streak. Simon Lajeunesse turned aside 22 shots in defeat, dropping his record to 9-4-4. Two goals in a 46-second span -- with the second intermission in between -- gave the Grizzlies a 3-2 victory over the Grand Rapids Griffins at Van Andel Arena in Grand Rapids, Mich. Jim Montgomery and Steve Gainey gave the Grizzlies a 3-1 lead and goaltender Wade Flaherty took the care of the rest. The Griffins scored with 3:58 remaining, but the Grizzlies stayed on top and cut Grand Rapids' lead to three points in the West Division of the AHL Western Conference. Just staying in second place seemed a reasonable goal for the Grizzlies on this 17-game road stretch. Suddenly, the standards are higher. They are 4-2-1 through seven games and play the Griffins again Friday. Utah is 5-0-1 against Grand Rapids this season. The Grizzlies knew good things were in store after Wednesday's first period. They were outshot 16-4, yet led 1-0 after Niko Kapanen's goal with 3:32 remaining. Utah gave up a short-handed goal early in the second period, but otherwise played solidly. The Stars veteran won't dress unless Curtis Joseph or Martin Brodeur suffers an injury. "IT'S ALWAYS THE hardest part of the job to give news to someone that he doesn't want to hear," Wayne Gretzky, Team Canada's executive director, told The Canadian Press from Los Angeles after informing Belfour. "I talked to Eddie and he handled it very well, although I'm sure he was really disappointed," Gretzky added. "But he was very much optimistic to still be going to the Olympics and be part of the team." While there had been talk that the No. 3 goalie might reject the assignment and stay home, Belfour, 36, indicated to Gretzky that he was still 100 percent committed to the team. Gretzky decided it was appropriate to let Belfour know before the team arrives in Salt Lake next week if, for no other reason, than to alert the goaltender's family ahead of time. Gretzky feels it would have been unfair to have Belfour's family travel all the way to Salt Lake and not be able to see him play. Gretzky reiterated Monday that Joseph and Brodeur would split the first two games of the tournament before coach Pat Quinn decides on a permanent No. 1. Canada's first game is Feb. 15 against Sweden.
