He kept saying how it felt like Christmas morning. But the biggest present wrapped in the brightest paper turned out to be the pink bunny outfit that he would be forced to wear at least once. The Aeros beat Utah 4-0 to take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-five series, with Game 2 scheduled Saturday at the Compaq Center. When goalie Wade Flaherty rejoined the team from Florida of the NHL, just in time for the morning practice Thursday, there was an obvious sense of relief in the Utah locker room. Perhaps too much relief. "It is never a bad thing when your top player comes back to the lineup," Hay said. "But you don't want anybody to relax because of it. Maybe a couple of guys did." The series started in the worst possible way when rookie Cory Larose picked up an errant puck at the Houston blue line and skated unchallenged to beat Flaherty through the legs eight minutes into the game -- with the Aeros skating short-handed. The backbreaker came at the game's midpoint, when Flaherty attempted to clear a puck from in front of the net but hit Larose in the chest. The puck dropped to the ice and Larose made an effort for it, then the puck fooled the Utah goalie and rolled across the goal line. "He kind of made a goalie save with his shoulder," Flaherty said. "I pretty much gave them that goal, and it gave them a lot of momentum." On the other end of the ice, Houston goalie Jamie McLennan made 30 saves for his first playoff shutout since getting the Grizzlies, then playing in Denver, off to a great start to the 1995 IHL playoffs with a 6-0 win over Minnesota. McLennan split time with Tommy Salo that year, and the Grizzlies went on to claim the Turner Cup championship. McLennan is not the first Houston goalie to blank Utah in the playoffs. Frederic Chabot did it twice in Utah's last playoff series in 2000. The Grizzlies appeared to dominate long stretches of the game in each period. But McLennan refused to give anything up. "It is tough for a team to gain momentum when things are going well in their end and then the other team comes down and scores," said Flaherty, who was in Atlanta with the Panthers on Wednesday night. Utah came closest to beating McLennan when defenseman Andre Lakos hit the post 8:30 into the third period. The puck appeared to cross the goal line, but the red light never came on and the referee let play continue. "We had some lucky bounces; that was one of them," McLennan said. Despite being two games away from elimination, the Grizzlies remain confident they can pull out the series. "We need to regroup, make some adjustments and get on the scoreboard and go from there," Hay said. bpretty@sltrib.com [ To quit the utah-grizzlies mailing list, send to majordomo@xmission.com ] [ the command "unsubscribe utah-grizzlies" (don't include the quotes) ] ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 12 Apr 2002 18:16:02 -0400 From: JonRags@aol.com Subject: [UG] Grizzlies contact info Does anybody have a phone number or e-mail address (prefer e-mail) to contact the front office or can anybody send me in the right direction? His plea was answered. Niko Kapanen tipped Mark Wotton's shot past McLennan at 7:34 of overtime to lift the Grizzlies to a 3-2 victory at Compaq Center on Saturday night. The win evens this best-of-five series at 1, with Game 3 in West Valley City, Utah, on Tuesday. Kapanen's game-winner was the second goal that was tipped past McLennan, who had a playoff shutout streak of five periods snapped early in the third period. "That's something we're well aware of," said Aeros coach Todd McLellan of the Grizzlies' strategy of smothering McLennan. "If you look at most of the goals we've scored, they've come from the crease, so whoever wins that battle in the paint probably's going to win the series." The loss was bitter for the Aeros, who battled back from a 2-0 deficit in the third period. Now they have to win at least one game in Utah to have a chance to advance to the conference semifinals. "It was a tough one to swallow, but we knew it was going to be a long series because they're a good team," Aeros forward Shawn Carter said. "We knew the importance of this game because we knew (Thursday night's) win didn't mean much if we didn't win tonight. But we're a pretty good road team, so hopefully we can go up there and play hard like we did and see what the outcome is." One thing that was no surprise was that Grizzlies goalie Wade Flaherty was back in form, saving 38 of 40 shots after allowing four goals in Game 1. "Wade Flaherty's a pretty darn good goaltender, and we saw that tonight," McLellan said. "He's going to give his team an opportunity to win every night." McLennan's shutout streak ended at 102:31 when the Grizzlies scored early in the third. Jim Montgomery won a faceoff to a wide-open Greg Hawgood, who had time to put a shot on net that Ryan Jardine tipped over McLennan into the goal. The Grizzlies looked like they were in control four minutes later as they took a 2-0 lead. The goal came after McLennan and defenseman Lawrence Nycholat collided behind the net, allowing Kapanen to center a pass in front to a wide-open Barrett Heisten for the easy goal. "On the first goal, we miss an assignment on a faceoff, and that proved to be costly. And the second one was a bit of a gift on some miscommunication," McLellan said. The Aeros cut their deficit in half with 9:30 left. A streaking Tony Virta set up the scoring play when he used his stick to keep a Grizzlies defender from playing the puck, then put a wrist shot on net that Flaherty knocked down. Mark Beaufait fanned on the rebound but chased down the puck and threw it back out front to Virta, who lifted it over a sprawling Flaherty for the goal. The Virta-Beaufait-Curtis Murphy line, thrown together at the start of the third period, tied it with 1:46 remaining. The Aeros got a break when Gavin Morgan lost his stick, allowing the Aeros to keep the puck deep in the Grizzlies' zone. The puck wound up behind the Grizzlies' goal, and Morgan tried to dive on it but missed, and Virta centered the puck into the crease. There was Murphy, who, while falling to the ice from being checked by Hawgood and another Grizzlies player, managed to swipe at the puck and knock it past Flaherty. In overtime, the Aeros had a great chance two minutes in, but Murphy lifted a rebound past a fallen Flaherty over the crossbar and into the stands. "We have to keep our heads up," McLellan said. Kapanen deflates Aeros; McLennan loses playoff shutout string

Before Game 2 of the AHL Western Conference quarterfinals, Utah coach Don Hay implored his troops to put more pressure on Aeros goaltender Jamie McLennan in front of the goal. "We battled pretty hard and came back from a two-nothing deficit, and we had our opportunities to put the game away. We have to stick our noses in there and bear down and make sure the puck's going in the net rather than over or by (Flaherty)."
