From: "Eugene Morgan" Subject: (utah-sailing) Show Me the Money! Date: 01 Mar 2001 11:29:38 -0800 Great News!!!! The $10,000,000 appropriation was approved. This should mean 1 million coming into the GSL South Shore marina and I think a similar amount for Bear Lake. We need to recognize that this is just a starting point. We need to be back at the table next year. This 1 million may only get us two or three new docks. Something else we might consider is seeing how we might help out if it will help the money to go farther. However I would be insistent that our effort and contributions not go unnoticed or unappreciated. My thanks to all who helped. As to HB 141, I've not been able to confirm what happened to the bill. Date: 02 Mar 2001 22:07:04 -0800 Understand that if they try to raise our slip fees there will be an open rebellion and Courtland Nelson knows it because he and I have already had that conversation. I would also say that Mr. Nelson is a fair and reasonable person and understands the value of the GSL South Marina. To his credit he has been our advocate and not our adversary. People at State Parks understand that they have been pulling slip fees out of our marina for 20 years and have invested very little back. This is a problem created by the legislature. All monies collected go back into the general fund and are divvied back out based on need, gee, seems I read about that before, 20th Century Motor Works? On a side note, they tried to raise our slip fees a couple of years ago to cover some supposed costs for power and the Yacht Club sat down with State Parks and helped them to understand why that was a bad idea. Come, on keep your chins up and look on the bright side. If they propose a fee increase we will just saddle up and go back into battle. Date: 03 Mar 2001 11:26:43 -0700 I have just received a letter from my Representative, Karen Morgan concerning how the funds for the South Shore Marina have been allocated. I have to thank Karen for following up on this. When I forwarded Gene's letter with my comments to Karen, she responded to my e-mail the same day. Now she has taken the time to follow-up with this letter. I am impressed! Thanks again Karen! These are the details Karen has sent to me: The South Shore Marina has been designated to receive $950,000.00. The monies are expected to be distributed to the following: * Tour Boat Docks * Lighting * Fencing * Pub House work (are we getting our own Pub? cool!) * "numerous immediate attention items." To quote Karen, "The hazardous conditions of the docks are classified under the last category. They are expected to be fixed soon, following the Governors signature of the proposed Natural Resource Capitol Appropriations." This will be a start, if we can get some repairs made, but it appears to me that with the other items on the list there may not be enough money for any new docks. I really doubt, however, that such a small change in the topography would affect the wind conditions on the GSL 20+ miles away. I guess it could possibly cause a major difference to the wind patterns on Rush lake for the sailboarders, but to change the wind on a huge body of water so far away I think is unlikely. The underlying paradigm for the study of chaos theory is the hypothetical example of the fluttering wings of a butterfly in Indonesia setting into motion the kinetic forces that when amplified by the surroundings affected by these beautiful wings, may eventually result in a hurricane somewhere thousands of miles away. "See: CHAOS THEORY" on your search engine. Also check out fluid dynamics. At the top of the tier ambient air and weather systems fall into this conversation. Another local weather phenomena to keep an eye on: is the snow upon the fabled Utah powder fields getting just a "tiny" bit heavier each year? Water content is the factor along with drop zone temperatures. If this is real then it is because of the terrific rise in BTU blanket cover over the SLC basin which is due in part by the increased population and the importing of industries that heat their massive buildings, and large burn large amounts of fuel for production. For sailing. this can directly effect the "local knowledge" benefits that those "guys up front" always seem to demonstrate. Cheers, Rockie Steve Ingram wrote: > Interesting question regarding Stockton Bar. > Finally, a good question on this sailing list directly relating to sailing issues!!!!! > I really doubt, however, that such a small change in the topography would affect the wind conditions on the GSL 20+ miles away. Magcorp uses the waters of the Great Salt Lake as its source of raw materials, and its solar evaporation ponds constitute the largest industrial use of solar energy. In the past Magcorp has frequently been in the local media due to its history of high chlorine emissions and other environmental and regulatory issues. Tom Tripp, Magcorp's Technical Manager, will speak on recent developments at Magcorp including the installation of new manufacturing technology that will reduce emissions and save energy. It was the Junior Program for kids ages 8-17. The kids presented a short play based on Snow White. It was quite entertaining. Tammy Silver then discussed this years program. We have most of last years kids returning and a few new faces. If you are still interested in the Jr. program and did not make it last night contact Tammy. Even if you do not have kids involved come and watch these kids anyway. It is a great way to spend Friday evenings. Never know, you may be racing against one of these kids in the near future. We all need to show them our support and encouragement. Thank you to everyone that came to the Seminars this year. I was very pleased with our turnout. We had a lot of new faces every night and hopefully these people will continue on in sailing. Believe me, it is a great stress reliever and we have a great lake to sail on. Thanks also to the vendors that helped us out this year. Special thanks go to West Marine, Sidsports, and South Shore Recreation. They all donated some great prizes. Please show these businesses your support when in need of boating supplies. Of course the Seminars could not have taken place without the people that presented them every night. We had some terrific presentations and hopefully everyone learned something new each night. These people spent a lot of their own time preparing and did an awesome job. MS Powerpoint really improves the show. Thank you to all these people. See you on the water.
