Every time this has happened, it has been via email from a member of the utah sailing communittee most likely infected and being sent by the virus itself. The latest incident occurred just a few hours ago. I recommend all computer users reading this email update your antivirus software (especially since the new goner virus came online a few days ago) and acquire antivirus software if you don't already have it. As for removal instructions and other information go to (thats all supposed to be one line if the email suts it in two): http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w3 2.badtrans.gen@mm.html for information on the virus. I have checked the archives and found nothing to be alarmed about. However, here are a few things to remember that will help to prevent infection by email viruses: 1. Email was never designed per the original RFC's (Internet blueprints) to carry Rich Text, or HTML text. Email is intended to be a plain-text transport. It is a pretty good idea to turn off html and rtf formatting in your email client for both sending and viewing messages. This also eliminates one method of spreading viruses. 2. There is no good reason for attachments to be sent through mailing lists. Sending a message to a mailing list with an attachment means that the attachment then has to be forwarded to hundreds of individuals. If there are 200 people on this list, a 100kb attachment becomes 20mb of network traffic. It's very inefficient for the mailing list servers, and inconsiderate of the system that carries our messages. Furthermore, if attachments, particularly executable ones are avoided, another avenue of spreading computer viruses is stamped out. 3. Don't execute, run, or view attachments of unknown origin or content. It's one thing to say don't send them to the list. But everyone must also exercise good judgement in not executing attachments that are sent to the list without knowing beforehand what they contain. Remember that there is NO POSSIBLE WAY to get a virus from email if you read each message as plain text, and never open attachments. (Badtran...) It reads e-mail addresses off the WebPages on your computer (temp. internet files) and sends it on to all. All it takes is to highlight the message while trying to delete it and one can be infected. Now that's a lot of lighting power. It would match the smallest of consumer generators, like Honda, and such. And it is silent. But remember, the wattage is not for free. Good thing is that it has a .03 amp standby mode. These units have low voltage drop outs so damage should be avoided to system. This is enough for using a small micro wave for warming things. \ Rockie Justin Lee wrote: > We started doing this for Raspberry days at Bear Lake a few years back & it > has now become such a big hit that the last couple of years...you couldn't > even get into the marina by car as there were so many people coming down to > watch. > > -----Original Message----- > From: David Oswald [mailto:davido@pacifier.com] > Sent: Sunday, December 09, 2001 8:02 PM > To: utah-sailing@lists.xmission.com > Subject: (utah-sailing) Christmas lights > > Here in Portland they have a tradition that you Salt Lake boaters > ought to start; the Christmas parade. > > Take a look at http://www.pacifier.com/~davido to see my Catalina 22 > decked out with 600 lights, running off of a 300watt inverter. Your e-mail address is on this post, it is picked up by the worm along with any others on an infected hard drive. If one's computer had been infected it would send a message to all addresses found no matter what kind of file. I have had intercepted via McAfee or Norton this bug no less than eight times. Some people are know to me others not. The bug shows up as soon as the message is highlighted. No need to open any file. As far as I know this only effects machines that use Outlook or Outlook Express. SAILPERKS First we wanted to extend a big thank you to all of the list participants that have signed up for our new SailPerks membership program. The initial response during November exceeded our expectations. We've also rec'd a lot of suggestions from various list members on how to make the program more enticing and to thank those who have joined at the same time. (Thanks to the Hunter List guys for being first with this idea). Each time a list has 25 people sign up for SailPerks, SailNet will have a drawing. Each SailPerks member on that list will be included, and they will have the chance to win a $50.00 SailNet gift certificate. So, the sooner you sign up, the better your chances are of winning! Speaking of Benefits -- we had pitched discount tickets to major Boatshows. We're going one better for the AC Sail Expo. Every SailPerks member is entitled to a VIP pass good for one day at the show. That's a $10 to $15 value right there. =20 One last thought on SailPerks. Several of the lists have seen a serious rash of virus activity in recent weeks. One of your SailPerks benefits is a pop/smtp e-mail address at SailNet. You can have any name you want (unless it's already gone) at @sailnet.net. The neat thing about this box is that i= t has a higher degree of virus protection. We scan all in- and outbound messages for viruses. It's not 100% foolproof but it is an additional layer of protection for those who aren't having their email scanned at the server now. You can also access that account via the web so it's a convenient traveling solution. To sign up now for these and all the other benefits, click here: http://www.sailnet.com/store/sailperks.cfm BURGEES SailNet Burgees are on the way! This is another great suggestion from our list members. You'll be able to spot each other on the water and know when you're in the company of other SailNutters (oops!, SailNetters). We've ordered the first 100 and they're due here in three weeks. The first batch is going first come, first serve so we've put up a link for advance orders. You can see the burgee and put your advance order in at http://www.sailnet.com/store/item.cfm?pid=3D23707 LAST MINUTE HOLIDAY GIFTS?? It's been a crazy year and we're seeing a lot of last-minute scrambling for Holiday Gifts. SailNet Gift Certificates are perfect for the sailors in your life! You can buy them on-line at http://www.sailnet.com/store/departments.cfm?id=3D378 LIST ARCHIVES The good news is that we upgraded the Archive Search feature and it's working great. The better news is that we've worked to add more features to the archives. It isn't operational yet but you'll soon be able view a threaded index of all the postings to your favorite list. You'll be able to view the threads in subject or date sequence so finding that old posting will be easier than ever. Look for this around the middle of next week. The archives are located at http://members.sailnet.com/email_archives/ SEASON's GREETINGS This is the time when most of us pause to reflect on the year. We all know it could have been better for a lot of people. Between terrorism, economic downturns and the now mundane "regular" problems it's been a challenging time. However that's affected you, we hope SailNet has helped you by providing a safe haven where you can recharge your batteries by focusing on something you love and enjoy. You've certainly done that for us. Let's all pray for a better year ahead. From all of us here at SailNet, we wish you a safe and happy Holiday Season! We're looking out = the window of our motor coach at the swaying palm trees, the gliding = pelicans and a pod of always smiling dolphins. An ocean tug pushing four barges just passed by and across the intracoastal waterway we see over 100 = large shrimp trawlers in port, their mostly Hispanic, Catholic crews home for = the holidays with their families. Subject: CHRISTMAS EVE IN SOUTH=20 TEXAS

DEAR FAMILY & FRIENDS,

It's hard to believe another = year has=20 come and gone.   This is a year none
of us will ever forget = as our=20 world and our very way of life has been
forever altered.

One = thing=20 which will never change, however, is our caring for all of you as
we = wish you=20 a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year..............may good
health = and=20 prosperity be yours.

On this "mid-winter" day in Port Isabel, TX, = it's=20 partly sunny, breezy and
the temperature has just dropped into the = high=20 60s.   We're looking out the
window of our motor coach at = the=20 swaying palm trees, the gliding pelicans
and a pod of always smiling=20 dolphins.  An ocean tug pushing four barges
just passed by and = across=20 the intracoastal waterway we see over 100 large
shrimp trawlers in = port,=20 their mostly Hispanic, Catholic crews home for the
holidays with = their=20 families.

We pray for each and every one of you, for the leaders = of our=20 country and
especially for the men and women in uniform who are = serving us=20 all.

Holiday greetings from,

JOHN J & NANCY J KELKER = (The=20 Nomads)
