From: "Daniel Merriman" Subject: (utah-sailing) Fun Race Date: 01 Sep 2002 15:17:17 -0600 ATTENTION ALL RACERS The GSLYC will be holding a Fun Saturday Race this Saturday, September 7. Skippers meeting is at 1030 with the start at 1200. This is a fun race so no times will be kept or awards given. Come and enjoy some racing while the weather is still nice. Many thanks to "Empty Space" for spending over six hours waiting for all the boats to finish the Governor's Cup. At least it was a pleasant evening for Hank and Sally. Race results are posted at the marina. In the heyday of sailing ships, all war ships and many freighters carried iron cannons. Those cannons fired round iron cannon balls. It was necessary to keep a good supply near the cannon. But how to prevent them from rolling about the deck? The best storage method devised was a square based pyramid with one ball on top, resting on four resting on nine which rested on sixteen. Thus, a supply of 30 cannon balls could be stacked in a small area right next to the cannon. There was only one problem -- how to prevent the bottom layer from sliding/rolling from under the others. The solution was a metal plate called a "Monkey" with 16 round indentations. But if this plate was made of iron, the iron balls would quickly rust to it. The solution to the rusting problem was to make "Brass Monkeys." Few landlubbers realize that brass contracts much more and much faster than iron when chilled. Consequently, when the temperature dropped too far, the brass indentations would shrink so much that the iron cannon balls would come right off the monkey. Thus, it was quite literally, "Cold enough to freeze the balls off a brass monkey!" (And all this time, you thought that was an improper expression, didn't you?) You must send this fabulous bit of historical knowledge to at least ten unsuspecting friends . The term "brass monkey" is not included in "A Sea of Words," the lexicon for Patrick O'Brian's series of early 1800's seafaring tales. I've found it to be pretty comprehensive about 18th.- & 19th.-century nautical terminology. Of course, if POB never used it in his novels, it wouldn't be in there. He had a lot of fun with unusual and obscure terms and I would be surprised if the "brass monkey" would have escaped his attention. I had been a buyer for ZCMI and when ZCMI sold to May Department Stores I transferred to the Meier & Frank division in Portland, OR. In February of 2001 I picked up a used Catalina 22 and sailed it on the Columbia River in Portland on the Oregon/Washington border. I kept it until January 2002. In January 2002 I decided that I needed a more substantial cruiser, so I sold the 22 and got a Catalina 27 that I have been keeping in a slip at Friday Harbor, WA (on the San Juan Islands). It's been a fun boat, and despite its age (it's hull 609, 1971) it really sails with its new main and Gennaker. ...the furling jib will be ordered this fall. I was spending two weekends out of three sailing at the San Juans until July when again I got transferred. This time it was to Los Angeles as a result of May Department Stores merging their Meier & Frank division into their Robinsons May division based in LA. The latest is that I've selected a slip in Channel Islands Marina at Oxnard, CA, and the Catalina 27 is being moved down from Friday Harbor sometime around the middle of October. It's no small undertaking since I have to fly back there to sail it from Friday Harbor to Anacortes, WA (the mainland) because movers won't take their rigs on the ferries. My new slip is about an hour away from my home in LA, and seems to be a great place to sail out of. I still keep up with the Utah Sailing emailing list and enjoy reading up on what's going on back home. Bummer about the wind gusts this summer that knocked Swan Song and a few other boats off their trailers. But I hear that Swan Song's repairs are nearing completion and my family will be back out there on the Great Salt Lake soon. Feel free to drop me a note, any of you who remember me or who have sailing advice regarding Southern California. I'll look forward to hearing from you. Free thought. Free speech. Well, there it is. Front page of October Sailing World. The Great Salt Lake with a sailor at the helm on "our" precocious body of water. A fine picture it is! Futher in, as one flips the pages to the article on the Saltiest Place to Race on Earth, the variances and discrepancies expand out from the type print. From the persons who "literally wrote the book on racing on the lake", to others who "defiantly flew a pirate flag", and the challenge-call of being "the club's only female skipper", there could be no more humbling experience than to have our sailors laundry aired for the world to read. The pictures are wonderful. How exciting to be on the front page. How fun to know that we have our differences but the common thread is to be out sailing. We find ourselves in our sturdy sleds making sense of the sometimes insolent wind and discourteous water. Less orderly than racing rules, like a defiant pirates flag, such as the Reynolds Cup of 2001. That precocious race taught me so much about what I needed to know for sailing. Then there are the valuable virgin air and glass-like water conditions when precision and control of temperment create over time, a fine sailor and racer. Those tidy racing rules bloom into some of the best races which I am sure we can all attest to that keep us coming back for more. Thank you for sharing your stories in the Sailing World article. Good ol' home town news. ;) It's all so beautifully personal. Harmony to all would be a fine goal. Navy = frigate finds Long Beach man, 62, in good shape

By = James W. Crawley

SAN = DIEGO UNION-TRIBUNE STAFF WRITER

September 24, 2002

Adrift in his damaged sailboat for 3=BD months, a Long = Beach man was found alive by a San Diego-based warship off the coast of = Costa Rica – more than 2,500 miles from his home port. =

Richard Van Pham, 62, was rescued a week ago by the = frigate McClusky and turned over to U.S. officials in Guatemala on = Sunday, Navy officials said yesterday.

He = survived by catching fish, seabirds and turtles for food and collecting = rainwater, said Navy crewmen who found him Sept. 17. Despite losing = about 40 pounds and being heavily suntanned, Van Pham was in good = condition when found, they reported.

"He's a tough old bird," said Cmdr. Gary = Parriott, the McClusky's skipper, in a satellite phone interview = yesterday. "I'm not sure I would have fared as well as he = did."

Van = Pham was dropped off in Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala, on Sunday when the = frigate stopped for a port visit. Efforts to locate him in Guatemala = City were unsuccessful last night.

The = McClusky's crew collected about $800 to pay the hapless mariner's air = fare home.

The = incredible story of bad luck and survival began as a short cruise from = Long Beach to Catalina in Van Pham's 26-foot sailboat Sea Breeze. A = storm broke his mast. His outboard motor and two-way radio also failed. =

For = unknown reasons, Van Pham was not reported missing by friends, and he = told officials he has no family. No search was conducted because no = missing persons report was filed, Coast Guard officials said. =

Van = Pham was spotted 275 miles southwest of Costa Rica when a U.S. Customs = Service P-3 drug-hunting plane saw his derelict vessel and asked the = McClusky to check it out.

When = the warship's boat neared, they saw a man cooking a sea gull on a = makeshift grill – the ship's wooden trim supplying the fuel. A = jury-rigged sail flapped from a splintered mast.

Hailing the boat in Spanish, Petty Officer 3rd Class = Elias Nunez said he was surprised when Van Pham answered, "I don't = speak Spanish. I speak English."

Van = Pham was equally surprised when the sailors told him what month and day = it was and where he was, Nunez said.

The = ship's corpsman, Petty Officer 1st Class A.J. Davis said Van Pham was in = exceptional health.

Davis = spent hours talking to Van Pham, who described bashing sea turtles with = a bat as they swam near the boat, hauling the carcasses aboard and then = cooking part of the meat while using the remainder as bait for seabirds = that would roost on the broken mast.

"This is an amazing story of survival," Coast = Guard Chief Warrant Officer Lance Jones said yesterday. "But it = also shows the importance of filing a float plan with friends or = family."

If = the Coast Guard had known he was missing, a search might have found him = much earlier, said Jones.

The = most poignant moment came when Van Pham left the Sea Breeze. =

"He waved goodbye to his sailboat," said Petty = Officer 3rd Class Joseph Slaight. "He was upset (that it would be = scuttled) and said he was going to miss it."

Unable to fix the sailboat, Van Pham approved its = sinking. Crew members torched the Sea Breeze, sinking it in 8,700 feet = of water.

"We did it while he was below decks to lessen the = blow," Parriott said.

There is also a family who survived off the Galapagos for several months. Also, a solo sailor was entangled and becalmed in the Sargasso Sea for months as well. All of it makes great reading. One of the classics is the real (?) adventures of the great story teller who was stranded on an ice flow with a three legged dog, a polar bear with an appetite, and he himself had only one leg. Date: 26 Sep 2002 12:01:05 -0600 Rocky, et al, Tristan Jones' book about his Arctic adventure is "Ice!" I think the book about being adrift on a life raft in the Sargasso Sea is "Adrift: Seventy-Six Days Lost at Sea" by Steven Callahan. The book about the family adrift in a life raft and dinghy after their boat was holed by (they thought) a whale near the Galapagos is "Survive the Savage Sea" by Dougal Robertson. It's the book that got me interested in reading sailing.survival stories, which led to sailing stories, which led to books about sailboats, which led to how-to-sail books, which led to a dinghy, which led to getting hooked on sailing, which led to ever larger boats. Be careful what you read! Bryant Pratt ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Thursday, September 26, 2002 11:12 AM > Stories of survival at sea abound in print.
