He was spotted Sunday morning on the beach adjacent to the GSL Marina. I saw him again this morning in the same place. The story goes that "Floyd", a Chilean pink flamingo escaped from Tracy Aviary in the early 90's. When spotted on the shores of the lake, aviary employees tried to recapture him to no avail. "Floyd" would just walk out further in the gooey mud or just fly off, making capture impossible. Aviary employees finally gave up leaving him to an assumed fate of starvation and death. On occasions, when "Floyd" would dissapear in the fall speculation was that his demise was caused by one of the many foxes that roam the GSL beaches. Pink feathers were even found on occasions and some witnessed foxes stalking him on occassions. But the fox faired no better. By next fall "Floyd" would return the the beaches near the marina. Now, every fall, GSL boaters and others, wait patiently for "Floyds" return, as if a good omen for the winter and spring to come. His most recent return in the last few days still leaves a mystery; Where does he go during the summer? Some claim to see him in Farmington Bay, others claim to see him in the ponds near Kennecott. One curious article, appearing in a local Montana newspaper a few summers ago, commented on a pink flamingo that returns every summer. Where does he winter? Anyway, Hoping "Pink Floyd" had a great summer vacation and I'm happy he as returned home. Hopefully he brings good omens of plenty of moisture and good sailing through the winter. The format will be roughly the same as last year. I would like to have an ALL CATALINA fleet and an ALL RANGER fleet. This means all the catalina made boats will race in one fleet (22, 25, 27, 30, Capri 25, Capri 30, etc). All the Rangers will race in another fleet (22, 23, 26, 28, 33, etc). If we have enough like boats I will break them down into fleets too (ie: olsons, Hunters, etc). Boats will also be scored overall also. The format will be one start and race for the PHRF boats. The race will be a mini- offshore. Catamarans and Daysailors are welcome also. We will have a series of buoy races for them. They will be broken into fleets based on turnout. As with last year I will be hosting a DEEP FRIED TURKEY DINNER after the racing. I will have four turkeys. Pot luck side dishes will be welcome (ie: potato's, rolls, cranberries, pumpkin pie, etc). Last year was a great success and I would like to build on that. The cost of the event is FREE. No entry fee. No dinner fee. You only need to pledge to have fun. So please come participate in some great, fun racing and good food. If weather does not permit racing we will still have the dinner so don't miss out. We are planning another "K Dock Field Trip" up to the spiral jetty. This is open to anyone who wants to come. We are planning to head to the Golden Spike monument and Spiral Jetty in the morning. For those who want to continue we will plan to head to Monument Rock on the north tip of the lake. This was the site of an old marina in the 1860's. For those who do not want to go to Monument Rock it is an easy trip back to Corrine and Salt Lake City. >From Monument Rock I am planning to continue around the lake to the ghost town of Kelton and then down the west shore, past the causway and Bangerter pumps and through the bombing range back to I-80 If you want to go on this "Field Trip" plan to be at the GSL marina by 8:45.
