We will be having at least one crane and possibly two in April. The first date being kicked around is April 3, 4, or 5. The second date being kicked around is April 24, 25, or 26. Give me your feedback. As for the Tribune article and the lake. Do not know how AP found out about a crane day or why they thought all these boats were pulling out because of the shallow water. The situation is not nearly as serious as the Tribune article made it sound. Nor did I pull my boat as stated in the article. Nor was that my boat hanging on the crane as stated in the article. Nor did I say the situation was "worse than I expected". Just goes to show you can't believe everything you read in the paper. I can't tell you how many people have called me over the article panicking about pulling their boats and when the next crane day will be. If the mouth of the marina gets dredged as planned this spring then all the boats will be able to sail this spring and summer. only a very few boats may be in trouble by fall. The vast majority of people will have a great sailing season with no trouble of shallow water. The marina is 8 1/2 to 9 1/2 feet right now. The mouth is 7 feet at the shallow spot. Deep channel is 9 to 14 feet deep consistantly. I would guess that we will drop 1 1/2 to 2 feet at most by November. (only my estimate). This would mean that anyone with 5 feet or less draft should be fine through next winter. BUT - - - If we have another disastrous winter like this one - - - We may be in serious trouble. Your right about Saturday drawing a larger crowd. But the Crane costs more per hour (and travel time) on Saturday. If we can draw a large enough crowd then it is more economical on the weekend. Otherwise a weekday is cheaper. As soon as I can find out how large the interest is I will make a determination. I think you can almost count on an early crane date and possibly the late crane date too. As for the Trib article. You can go to Google and type in "Salt Lake Tribune" that will get you to their home page. It was in the Monday Tribune and talked about the drought and the impact it was having on boating. Several feet deep, grass, a couple of nice patio/docks, and acres of water. The Hilton desk says we can sail there as long as we don't chase the ducks. Theres even a restaurant and a bar. I think we should have an informal sailing there and see if we want to hold some of our regattas there. Dear Darin,

I'm sorry that I can't attend the meeting on Thursday, but would like to be kept informed of events.

In my opinion it is the wrong time to be looking at more landfill while there are many other options.

They intend to take people to the island via a barge for $30 a day and include a horse or atv. There was no mention of sailing to the island. We have just been trespassing. The owners have never given permission to sailors for unlimited access to the island. The Richards family has leased the island to a group who plan to do controlled hunting. But this is not all they do. They are doing horse back riding tours and boat tours to the island. They have Boy Scout tours already planned. I have talked to the new leasee. Many of is ideas sound interesting. This may actually free up the island more for the sailors. When I talked to Justin, he was ameanable to the sailors visiting the island. He would just like prior notice so that you are not ticketed as a trespasser and are not in harm of an organized hunt. For those that want an organized tour of the island this can be arranged for $30.00 per person. You may sail your own boat or take their boat from Antelope Island. There was no fee for just visiting the island with your own boat as long as you had prior permission. If trailer sailing then you need an ablative paint. Micron Extra or Micron CSC have proven well for the lake. Stay away from west marine paints (not West Marine itself, just their ablative and modified epoxy paints). These paints have not proven as well for this environment although they are more affordable than the Interlux family of paints. The times are the same for both days. The meetings are to bring skippers up to date on the plans for the season, with emphasis on any changes from previous years. It's also a good time to get the required paperwork done and to get membership dues and racing fees paid. The required paperwork includes signing the liability release form, membership renewal form, PHRF form (if new), and signing up for the requisite turn(s) as RC boat during the season. These things can be done at other times, but getting them done now, rather than at a race event, can save you and the race committee time and stress. There are notices on each one. The state has decided to allow unsecured storage at the marina but each trailer must be tagged and you must have a signed contract. The fee is $25.00 per month. Please check your trailers. Instructions are on the notices posted to each trailer. Check them quick. The grace period is 60 days. My understanding is starting June 1st any trailer or boat in the unsecured area that does not have a contract will be considered abandoned and will be towed. It would be a nice accomodation for those of us who want to race, but are unable to attend the race orientation (which has now ended). Having available forms online, may save the committee "stress" in having to meet newcomers, or latecomers to "race orientation" and getting signatures, etc. Just an idea. A possibility? Thank you.
