Hi,

I capsized my new dinghy on the 4th and realized that I don't have enough floatation to keep the gunwales high enough above water to bail out.  I'd like to add foam under the floorboards and make some foam seat backs & cushions for better floatation.

Can anyone recommend any sources for good closed cell foam?  The under-floor stuff can be rigid, but I also need something that's soft enough for seat cushions. I'm thinking of something like the semi-rigid foam that's inside throwable floatation devices.  Is anyone aware of any local suppliers?

Thanks,

Visit our new web site at http://www.parkcitysail.org. We are a new club, founded in the spring of 2003 and use Jordanelle and Deer Creek Reservoir as home waters. The Park City Sailing Club was formed in answer to numerous Park City and vicinity sailors expressing a desire to gather at local waters for social sailing and informal racing. Also, since local reservoirs are heavily used by power boats and personal watercraft, a collective forum promoting sailing interests to local park and water managers is needed. The Charter of The Park City Sailing Club is to: a.. Promote sailing in our local waters. b.. Provide a forum for local and visiting sailors to exchange information. c.. Organize sailing meets/regattas for social boating and informal racing. d.. Provide a collective voice promoting the sailing community for local and regional waters. If you sail in Deer Creek or Jordanelle reservoirs (or have an interest in sailing there), it would be beneficial to join the club. Also, to receive more information regarding reservoir/sailing issues and to receive invitations to local sailing meets, please join The Park City Sailing Club. Charter Membership lasts through 2003 and is free! Our first Thursday Evening "Regatta" is July 24th at Jordanelle Reservoir. We look forward to meeting you! Ok, I'll answer my own question, in case anyone else finds themselves in need of  additional buoyancy.  I found closed-cell polyethylene foam at a local foam manufacturer/distributor called Marko.  They're at 1414 S. Gladiola, Suite 400 (about 1 mile W of 215 off California Ave.)

It comes in 4'X9' sheets (minimum order) in thicknesses of 1/2 inch increments. I bought 2" which is made from 4 1/2" sheets laminated together.  It's also great stuff f for making bouyant seat cushions and back rests.

I wanted to sail and race the Merit25 on the Great Salt Lake but it seems that the lake is too far down to get it in via the ramp. And besides there aren't any slips available for me to leave it there. Sounds to me that I should leave it at the Jordanelle small marina dry storage you mentioned. I for one know what it's like to have to deal with many factors, agencies and budgets to get jobs/projects done within our State. And honestly, I'm a bit surprised that you were able to get this done at all, considering the other 'concerns' relating to the low water levels and current State budget. Yes, having the current 'mouth-monster' removed will make the marina safer (the mouth is a really bad spot to be stuck-in-the-mud as we all know) and may allow some of the larger boat to get out, but as a reminder to all sailors, there are many more 'monsters' out there now that the water is so low. I hope that they pay close attention to their depth-gauges and sail smart. (Now that you've been able to get the mouth dredged, how about the rest of the lake? I'd really like to circumnavigate Fremont Is. again... please see what you can do about this. : ) Your letter to everyone on the e-mailing lists was nice to receive Christopher. It was helpful to be updated as to the current time table and difficult process you when through to get this project done. I know how busy you must be these days, but I'd like to add that it seems to be the lack of communication, or miscommunication around the marina that can cause problems. The marina has many groups, be it the yacht club or docks, and information shared with any of them (group or individual) does not reach all slip-renters. Most of the slip-renters are not YC members, therefore important information needs to go directly to slip-renters (also, not all slip-renters are on these email lists). I really liked the one-page marina information notes that used to be sent to slip-renters via USPS. If time allows, maybe sending something like that every other month or so would really help communicate your efforts, current marina news, etc., with all of us. Just a thought, and I understand that your time may not allow for such a thing and hope that this suggestion does not cause you any grief. I wonder how many slip-renters, esp. 'B' and 'C' docks will even want to be at the marina once that gray-matter from the bottom of the lake is spread out drying in the hot sun? Yuk! Like my old surf days at the beach, let's hope for a strong offshore breeze. Christopher, thanks again for your note and your efforts to get the 'mouth-monster' tamed. I hope the project goes well.
