From: Mike Jones Subject: [OUTDOORS] TR: san raphael river to virgin springs canyon Date: 03 Jun 1997 12:22:27 -0600 here's a brief summary of the conditions for a hike in the san raphael swell. We hiked last weekend along the san raphael river to virgin springs canyon from the san raphael canyon on the buckmaster draw road. The hike was definitly a top 10 best hike of all time, but there were some drawbacks. We saw lots of cows, people, cow poo and horse flies. I don't mind cows too much, they even seranaded us in the morning. My companion's comment at 530 am was "give me a shotgun and I'll make it quiet" We ran the same route as a class from the U of Utah so that put 20 people within an hour of us at almost all times. they were good neighbors, but I am not used to having any nieghbors in the swell. I personaly killed several hundred flies this weekend (slight exageration). The geology was very cool. We saw lots of petrified wood. Found a rock that appears to have an imprint of dinosaur skin (we are taking it to a palentologist today). The weather was hot. We spent much of the afternoon sitting under a cayon overhang taking a nap in the shade. We experienced a hail storm along the san raphael river. It was awesome, but we were glad we weren't in a slot canyon at the time. Virgin spings canyon is worth seeing. Its got a groovey spring at the head with clean (clean as in it won't ruin your filter) water. mike. PS: do any of you have the URL for the ski trip down the west face of timpanogos that was in the provo daily herald a while back? ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- From: "Charles R. It has been a problem for years I gather and I was wondering if it is still illegal to enter. Jim
