Has anyone gone there this time of year, and know how prepared he needs to be for the weather? Is there usually snow there now? They aren't camping, but will be out in the weather all day, and he'd like to be prepared with enough clothing if he needs it. What a beautiful day here in Northern Utah today! I love the sport, but get frustrated when I get skunked due to lack of knowledge. I would love some tips on selecting the best spots, best times of the year and day, bait selection, and how to rig it to increase my odds. the places i go to most often are deer creek, tibble fork, and jordanelle because they are most convenient to me. I would also love tips on catching catfish on utah lake, which i have never tried because i don't know where to go, what to use, or how to use it. Also, i hear a lot about people catching fish by "jigging" pardon my ignorance, but i don't know how to "jig" a detailed explanation would be greatly appreciated! Where in Utah will you be rafting? And when? I will keep my eyes peeled for your reply in case you are rafting close to Beautiful Moab. My husband was out in Westwater Canyon on the Colorado for Swiftwater Rescue training last Friday & had a great time. I have been stuck at work & haven't been out yet this year. My kayak is anxious to hit the Colorado and so am I! I became totally hooked from the first time I went. Rafting is a large part of why we moved to Moab from Ohio last year. Call 1-800-635-6622 for information about Moab. Tell them you are primarily interested in rafting. The best way to begin rafting is either with a commercial outfitter or on a private trip with experienced rafters. For your first raft trip, I would recommend the Moab "Daily" or "Fisher Towers" section of the Colorado River just outside of Beautiful Moab. This stretch of the river is really beautiful. It has some fun rapids. They are not life threatening, but you will get wet! For a commercial outfitter, I would recommend Canyon Voyages in Moab. (435) 259-6007. I am sure they have a 1-800 number, but I don't know it. Don & Denise will take good care of you. Hope you get to raft this year and enjoy it! It even has one-room cabins next to restrooms for those people without tents (or caught in a rainstorm as my family was.) It has tent areas, and RV areas, and has nice showers and a pool and hot-tub, and playground for kids. It was not expensive. Slickrock Campground is the name, I think. We've stayed there several times. There is also a campground in Arches National Park, but it fills up quickly and isn't right in Moab. There are a few places right on the river that are free, and have portable toilets. There are several places to rent bikes. Poisen Spider is one bike rental, and I sure other people can think of some more. Great biking, but easy to get lost. Make sure you get good directions and have a detailed map and extra water. Along Utah Route 128 (the River Road) there are various campgrounds like Big Bend, Goose Island, Hal's Canyon, Hittle Bottom, etc. There are also some campsites along Kane Creek Blvd. (go to McDonald's & turn right), continue several miles & look for campsites off to the right by the river. You can also find some inexpensive campgrounds in the LaSal Mountains by Warner & Oowah Lakes. If you are interested in the area just south of Moab, try the Canyon Rims Rec. area. Hatch Point Campground is really nice. There are also campsites by the Slick Rock Bike path in the Sand Flats area. There are also a number of commercial campgrounds here in town. The hostel is called "Lazy Lizard". Phone number is (435) 259-6057. If you aren't a camper & want to stay in a motel, remember that this is a tourist town & there is often more demand than supply. It would be a good trip to become a camper. Since it is desert here, this is a great place to learn to camp. Of course, Poison Spider Bikes is the best bike shop in Utah because our son, Mike works there. Ask for him when you go. We have the fabric shop in town. We are in front of & just north of City Market. Stop in to say "hi"! Hope you enjoy your time in Moab, Utah. If you want some general information & more info about biking Moab, call 1-800-635-6622 & they will send you stuff about this beautiful place we call home.
