In my experience, most tourists don't roll out of their motor homes and hotel rooms until MUCH later than that! How is the driving on Beef Basin Road? I'll be driving a '96 GMC Jimmy. I am thinking of moving to Utah. Is it possible to find a similar place there? One that won't break the budget. I am not a mountain biker or skier, just hiking, fishing and solitude. This may look like a very stupid question so let me ask this: if you were choosing a place to live in Utah, where would that be? Thank you for any help you can offer. We chose Moab. We LOVE it here. As a "local" I can always find a secluded place to hike & I haven't even ventured into the mountains. I've been too busy here in the desert. You learn what places to avoid during the height of the season. I honestly feel like I live in Mecca! However, in your case, I think you might want to look into something in San Juan County, or the area over by Escalante-Boulder. These counties have lots of National Forest (Fish Lake NF and Dixie NF)areas that include lots of mountains (with Pine and Quaking Aspen forests), lakes, streams, and hiking areas. Much different than the slick rock of South Eastern Utah. Yet you are still within a few hours of the metropolitan areas of the Wasatch front (Provo, Salt Lake) and Nevada(Las Vegas), a few hours from the National Parks/Monuments (The Golden Circle) of Southern Utah, Nevada, and Arizona [Bryce Canyon NP, Zion's NP, Capital Reef NP, Arches NP, Canyonlands NP, Cedar Breaks NM, Natural Bridges NM, Rainbow Bridge NM, Hovenweep NM, Lake Powell/Glen Canyon N Recreation Area, Great Basin NP (Nevada), Grand Canyon NP (Arizona)]. Also within a few hours of lots (too numerous to list) of state and local parks, lakes, rivers, and recreation areas close areas for hiking, fishing, and solitude. The Southern half of Utah is very geographically diverse.
