Couldn't agree more - you sum up my thoughts about the album completely. There are a few tracks that remind me of Fluke's "Techno Rose Of Blighty", and some of the vocals from the "Oto" album, and I still think (after several listens) Squeeze Please is the worst track on the album. When I heard it for the first time, my thought was "NO!! Boris, you're too talented to put out another wacky latino-dance-trombone-thing that sounds not quite like "The Race" ... and it did take me a few listens to "get" the album proper. But on the whole it is a very good album ... probably not as good as PU, but you can't have everything. But it's still better than "Baby" and "Zebra" which in my mind are still the two most disappointing albums although there are a couple of fabulous moments and tracks on both of these ... and it was nice to seem them getting darker again after the frivolous "Baby". Favourite track on the album at the moment: "Croissant Bleu". Going through a rather French phase at the moment ... probably listening to Air's "Moon Safari", and Laila France's "Orgonon" too much ... or is it the cheese? ... :) Old Dieter really should do more vocals in French ... he sounds really cool, very sophisticated ... although maybe if he did we wouldn't get new words in the English language like "uniwerse" (see "Domingo") ... which would be a pity. At first I didn't like it, I thought they were just retreading old ground...... but now I actually like it a great deal. It's interesting however to hear how other people's opinions differ though. "Baby" is just about my favourite Yello album apart from "Stella" and a measure of how much I now like "MP" is that I'd say it's their best album since "Baby". I think Air sound like elevator music to be frank........ but I do like the Laila France album (though I've always been a big Momus fan anyway). Is it "foreigner" French or is he in a comfort zone?? Interesting how there seem to be two camps of thought where Baby & Zebra are concerned. My thoughts concerning these two releases for years has been that Boris needs an outside producer. Sort of an, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" thing. I too went through a period of closet disappointment the first few listens then had the songs grow on me. I have always regarded jazz as sort of pompous and snooty but decided the jazzy parts were thoughtful and not without a sense of humor. The "Babylon" track stands out musically though some of the rhymes make me uncomfortable. Trite? Mundane? not sure-rarely do lyrics affect me but they just seem awkward. That Blender song on Baby was a good example of the same sentiment. I like the croissant song too. Is it about food? Hope not. From my wife's reactions (she's a fluent French speaker), it couldn't be anything other than Swiss French (quite a thick accent), and it's fairly idiomatic. > Interesting how there seem to be two camps of thought where Baby & Zebra are > concerned. FWIW I think Baby is one of Yello's best, but was rather disappointed with Zebra. Where does that put me? I wasn't sure about MP at first, but it's growing on me. That's a fairly sure sign that it will become a firm favourite. > I like the croissant song too. Is it about food? Hope not. My French is fairly awful, but parts of the lyrics are along the lines of "When I am with you, I am in fear, just a little." Only the single >sounds like old stuff and to my mind it's the worse track on the album! Yep. I too get the same feeling about that Squeeze Please track. It is different from the rest. I would like to hear if there is some good reason for it -- is it made much earlier than other tracks? Or were it added after hearing that there is a similar song (with respect to mambo rhythm, whatever) at top ten quite recently? >glad they have delved into the slinkier, deeper side of techno rather than >slamming up the BMPs as they did with tracks like Resistor (too I don't see similarities between those two. >undignified!) Actually tracks like "Houdini" remind me of Fluke (though >Fluke pinched Yello's style first of course). A big difference on this album >is Boris's (slightly disappointing) use of fairly generic techno-ish sounds. He uses them pretty well. He seem to use the same composition methods than used with Temendeous Pain (Bible Mix etc.) but this time he got the technique more transparent. But I'm not expert on these... I miss more occasional sound effects. Some female voices as addition to Dieter's voice. Well, these could be considered as wishes for the next album! There I remember him saying that the vocal line was pretty much done in one take and of course that his Italian was by no means perfect. I would imagine therefore that the same applies with "Croissant Bleu" and that he would argue that if he'd tried to perfect his French the performance itself would have lost something in the process. Monolingual English speakers like myself would struggle to tell the difference anyway :) Andrew ARWales@aol.com # Need help using (or leaving) this mailing list? # Send the command "info yello" to majordomo@lists.xmission.com. # To post, email yello@lists.xmission.com; replies go to original sender. # Yello discography available at http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs?yello ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 25 Nov 1999 21:24:45 +0100 From: =?iso-8859-1?Q?VIALLE_Gr=E9gory?= Subject: (yello) Croissant Bleu >Subject: Re: (yello) Motion Picture >Sent: 23/11/19 1:45 AM >Received: 23/11/99 7:28 PM >From: FGriego@aol.com >To: yello@lists.xmission.com > >I like the croissant song too.
