From: Mark Pulley Subject: (yello) 3rd of June Date: 02 Jan 2000 21:10:34 +1100 I've had a chance to look up that article about 3rd of June, which is from New Musical Express, 10 December 1988, called 'Ma! I'm on top of the world!'. It looked at each of the songs in 'Flag'. I quote the 3rd of June section: -------- Is June 3 your birthday? "No." Ah well. "I lived in New York for some time and it really is very impressive. Have you seen 'Metropolis', when the masses come out? Out of these Skyscrapers these millions come out and it's like a flood catastrophe of human bodies, rolling through these cities like rolling mud, disappearing into the subways. In New York this lasts maybe an hour, then it's empty! "But I did not start this song by wanting to express something like this, it was the other way around." (Dieter sings the rhythm.) "It's like a giant walking through these cities, checking out those little creatures down there." (Sings it again.) "Like a huge King Kong, the capitalist monster. "Then there's this little guy, Mr Tulip, who takes off his jacket, puts it nice and neatly on the pavement, stands on it, the jacket being the expression of his administered life, and he has this little speech. But the masses pass by... this is very typical New York." -------- I'm not sure whether this means he wrote the rhythm or not. Another quote I was thinking of, which I thought might have been in that article was actually about 'The Race', from Melody Maker, November 26, 1988. Dieter said: "Billy Mackenzie with Yello, it's gotta be huge, Shirley Bassey with Yello, it's gotta be huge. But after all that you've still got 'The Race', which is the Yello song I'm perhaps the most responsible for ever.." Naturally if Yello give an interview to a German or Swiss publication they are going to speak German, one wouldn't expect them to speak any other language but that. However if you don't speak German, but are a fan, there is a natural curiousity to know what is said and correspondence on this list is conducted in English (as this is the one language ALL the people on this list have in common). It would be nice to know what Dieter and Boris have been saying about "MP". The interview on www.amazon.de being an example. Sure maybe we should learn some German, but that criticism is better directed at someone like myself rather than Olga who is already conversant in more than one language. Well, because if all the people had spoken JUST their native languages and all the information had been on various languages, people would have never been able to communicate with each others. They wouldn't have understood people of other nations. As English is the language for the world community, people should try to learn it. Date: 27 Jan 2000 12:04:06 -0000 Just found out about this mailing list - talk about behind the times! Anyway nice to have joined it at last. Having read my way through the archives it seems that there was a lot of discussion about PU when it was released - but not much seems to have been said about Motion Picture yet. So I thought I'd be one of the first to say how much I love this album - I think it's their best since One Second without doubt! I think it's a brilliant and natural progression of their "original" sound - it's the album PU should have been. For those of you that want to know - I "discovered" Yello when The Race was released (back when I was a youthful 16), I caught a glimpse of the video on TV and was immediately drawn to the fact that there were two fortysomethings(?) prancing about like teenagers having fun, and that the song itself was a slice of brassy perfection. I haven't looked back ever since! Anyway here's my list of my top five favourite Yello albums; 1. One Second 2. Motion Picture 3. Stella 4. Flag 5. Baby Yep, they're all what you would term "new" Yello - I make no apologies for this! No doubt someone has said this already - but as a fan in the UK I'm finding it very difficult to find a record shop in the London/South area that does more than one copy of the latest album, can anyone recommend a good import shop for all the CD singles I've missed? Where are the melodies, the sweeping drama, the intricacies of Pocket Universe or One Second or Stella or Flag? I wouldn't say it's downright bad like Zebra, but it's lifeless! Any Yello is better than most anything on the radio, but I expected so much more after the delight that was Pocket Universe.
