Volume 7 : 1976-1981 "L'homme a la tete de chou" Part of this CD is the concept album "l'homme a la tete de chou" and you also have several of my favorite songs : "lady heroine", "ces petits riens" et "souviens toi de m'oublier" with Catherine Deneuve. 2. Volume 1 : 1958-1960 "le poinconneur des lilas" On this CD, Gainsbourg sings, I mean, really sing (no "talk over") and all the songs sound very old fashion between jazz and "chanson francaise"... A point I want to raise : on the Tzadik record, you can only hear one period of Serge Gainsbourg. No song from : * his last period : "New York" period ("you're under arrest" or "love on the beat" => what a play on word in French !!!), * his period "franchouillarde" before the 60°s or * his reggae period...(with the musicians of Peter Tosh) He IS NOT just a 60/70° song writer !!! After checking out a few discographies, I've found out he was on a few albums by Herbie Mann (whom I own nothing of, and know nothing about othe than he plays flute) and _Super Nova_ by Wayne Shorter. I think, though Patrice would probably know for sure on this, that the only recordings by this trio were available as part of Chadbourne's ephemeral cassette series. The Partch reissues on CRI are generally quite good, primarily taken from the private Gate 5 recordings originally released in, I think, the mid-60s. The transfers to digital are good, & given the unevenness of the source recordings, they're very good. & the range of pieces is excellent. There are certainly lots of other recordings of Partch's music, but the only major work or style that's not well represented in this set can only be restored by the eventual release of Delusion of the Fury, if Sony ever gets around to it. So if you've been curious about Partchs' microtonal music, the CRI set is a good place to start, though for many people 4 discs may be too much. Since I know a lot of folks who have trouble with Partch's use of voice (often very melodramatic) & his texts (often very corny), I'd recommend new listeners to Partch check these discs out in the order of their release. Volumes 1 & 2 both have substantial instrumental works (most of the 3 Plectra & Percussion Dances on 1 are instrumental, all of On the 7th Day Petals Fell in Petaluma on 2) & the vocal works on these discs seem to work for all but the most enured listeners, especially the Wayward on 2, an early series of pieces using texts by hobos and drifters. Both Volumes 3 & 4 may be more problematic (but they're good, too). 3 includes the Dreamer that Remains, the last large work (1972), made for a film that CRI apparently also distributes on video, and an earlier (1958) work for film, Windsong. Other works on 3 are Rotate the Body..., in which Partch's instruments are heard in conjunction with a college marching band & classical vocalise, & Water Water!, which is interesting, though very silly. Volume 4, The Bewitched, is a single 75 minute-long music theater piece if you've liked the other theatrical works, check it out, if you haven't, you might should run away. There are a few other recent Partch releases worthy of note in this context. The American Composers Forum continues its Enclosures series, offereing a wide range of previously unavailable Partch works. They've put out a four CD set, a book reproducing lots of Partch texts, photos and ephemera & a couple of videos of Partch performances and films uising his music (including the only currently available version of Delusion of the Fury). A further CD set is scheduled for release in early 1998. Check out their Web site for more details: . Unfortunately the Winter & Winter label has only recently connected with a US distribution, so not many folks have been lucky enough to get this. The CD has won awards in Europe as best classical release of the year! Don't let that scare you. It's great. Uri usually carries a couple of copies around in his pocket, so if you see him ask about it. The show will be hard tickets, I believe, and it's at 3PM. At the time Sharrock played with him, Mann was going through a transition from bossa nova and soul jazz to early fusion. For that sort of thing, these records are pretty good, but they sound very dated today. Sharrock doesn't play much on most of them, and when he does he often sounds out of place. I can't recommend any of them very strongly, but the ones to plump for if you want to hear Sharrock are probably _Memphis Underground_ (a minor classic of its genre, with Sharrock having it out with Larry Coryell on some Stax/Volt-inspired instrumentals) and _Hold On I'm Comin'_ (Sharrock's the only guitarist, David "Fathead" Newman plays nice soulful tenor). _Super Nova_ is quite good, sounding like a precursor of early Weather Report more than anything else. But Sharrock is one of three guitarists and John McLaughlin is featured much more prominently. I'd recommend the album, but not if you're just interested in Sharrock's contribution. He's less prominent here than on _Tauhid_. I'd recommend two easily available records for Sharrock's pre-'86 work. The first is Miles Davis's _Jack Johnson_, on which Sharrock plays uncredited but very identifiable guitar towards the end. He's not on much of the record, and he's mixed lower than I'd like, but he plays beautifully noisy stuff. The second is Material's _Memory Serves_, which features Sharrock prominently on six of eight tracks. Laswell's icy experimental funk provides a great setting for Sharrock's firey guitar.
