I'm confused by the bondage interest in his work ( such as the cover for the Painkiller live in japan disc and the naming of selections like Osaka Bondage). The Painkiller live album is called Rituals so I believe the cover photo relates to this title, but what confuses me is how bondage relates to Zorn's music which to me has meant breaking though musical bondage's. Looking up Zorn's artist list from the Grand Guignol disc, I found sites on the web about Dan Oniroku who is as much as I've seen a bondage artist. The theme of bondage is the only one that doesn't make sense to me in Zorn's work ( even the use of a serial killers writing on a wall for Buried Secrets makes sense to me). I would appreciate hearing others on the lists thoughts on this subject. One other quick comment yesterday I picked up the new Music Revelation Ensemble release that has Zorn playing on it (called Cross Fire) it is interesting hearing Zorn play James Blood Ulmer"s compositions. The only bad part of the Disc is that Zorn and Pharaoh Sanders never play on a track together. - - ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 29 Mar 1998 23:28:20 +1000 From: "Julian" Subject: Re: Zorn and Bondage > I am wondering if any one else is confused or put off by Zorn's interest > in bondage. Schleep is fantastic!! I too, was lukewarm to it at first, but it has definitely grown on me. Much like Rockbottom did many years ago. I know this would be heresy in some quarters, but I think Schleep may even supplant RockBottom as the quintessential Wyatt album. In January, 1997, cellist and composer Boris Rayskin organized the 11-day Sergey Kuryokhin International Interdisciplinary Festival (SKIIFestival) in New York City dedicated to the memory of Sergey Kuryokhin. Tragically, Boris's life ended soon after the festival. SKIF2 is dedicated in his memory. SKIF2 will once again bring together many artists with whom Kuryokhin collaborated, as well those close to his creative spirit, to perform in this eclectic musical celebration. The festival will showcase the most cutting edge avant-garde, jazz, and experimental rock musicians from Russia, the United States and Europe including: "Silver Apples", "Tequila Jazz", "Kolibri", Rashied Ali, Marilyn Crispell, "Tri-O", Vladimir Tarasov, Sakari Luoma, Yudanov and Katz, David Soldier, "White Out", Borah Bergman, Cyro Baptista, "Vershki da Koreshki", "The Slackers", Volkov-Trio, Spectre and Sensational, Ned Rothenberg, Anatole Gerasimov, Aleksey Khvostenko, William Hooker, DJ-Olive + WE, Peter Brotzman and special guest artist Chico Freeman and many more. Daniel Rayskin, Boris's Brother will perform a special piece dedicated to his late brother. "SKIF2", will be held at the best venues of New York City: THE COOLER, CAMI HALL, MERKIN HALL, and the ELBOW ROOM. The festival will be an opportunity for further collaboration between Russian, European and American performers who will share their music with New York audiences. SKIF2 is produced by Bliss Records in Association with The Russian-American Cultural Forum. Artistic Direction for the festival is provided by Seva Gakkel, chairman of the Board of The Sergey Kuryokhin Foundation, St. Petersburg, Russia, and Anatole Gerasimov. Naked City - a big mixture of jazzy stuff, bluesy stuff and a bit of thrash here and there. Probably the best one to start on - it includes covers of James Bond, Lonely Woman by Ornette Coleman and the brilliant Contempt by George Delerue, among others. Grand Guignol - one long noisy track followed by a bunch of classical covers (Debussy, Scriabin, Messaien, Ives and Di Lassus) and then a whole lot of "thrash jazz" - short bursts of energy with heavy guitars, saxophone squealing and Eye screaming his lungs out. These pieces have got titles like Pigfucker, which is an added bonus. Torture Garden - all material on this disc overlaps from the last two - it includes the whole thrash jazz section from Grand Guignol and some of the heavier tracks from Naked City. Radio - probably the most fun album - included is a list of influences for each track which is supposed to help you figure out where the band is coming from in each piece (it rarely helps). There are a lot of fully cohesive tracks here. But just in the first few tracks there are elements of funk, freejazz, classical, metal, bebop, surf and rockabilly. Absinthe - ambient soundscapes perhaps? I don't know how to describe this. Apparently, they set out to make noises that you wouldn't easily recognise. Heretic - noisy tracks with smaller groups from the band getting together and feeding off each other. Lots of squealing, screaming and fucking about. Leng Tche - a torturous slow heavy piece, over 30 minutes in length. It depicts a chinese torture and so in the middle there is a lot of screaming. There are (very) sustained chords, very few chord changes though. You shouldn't listen to this while watching the counter on your cd player. Well, that's all of them I guess. By the way, this is a really cool thing to do to if you want to waste some time. - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 30 Mar 1998 23:14:52 +1000 From: "Julian" Subject: Re: the far side > Is Bill Frisell's music for Tales From The Far Side available on any of his > releases? It's not one of my favorites, though it's a good example of his dense large-ensemble works, in the same class as Neither and the "... and Orchestra" series. - - - ------------------------------ End of Zorn List Digest V2 #280 ******************************* To unsubscribe from zorn-list-digest, send an email to "majordomo@xmission.com" with "unsubscribe zorn-list-digest" in the body of the message.
