Sadly, none of the following albums have been reissued on CD: Bennie Maupin has 3 albums as a leader, one (the first) is in the sextant vein, the other two are in the Headhunters vein. 1974 - The Jewel In The Lotus with Herbie Hancock, Billy Hart, Buster Williams, Bill Summers, ... 1976 - Slow Traffic To The Right with Blackbyrd McKnight, ... 1978 - Moonscapes with ??? Eddie Henderson released a whole lot of albums in the 1970's (which were all, AFAIK, quite funky), remained quiet in the 1980's and started to release hard bop records in the 1990's: 1973 - Realization with Herbie Hancock, Bennie Maupin, Billy Hart, Buster Williams, Patrick Gleeson, Lenny White ... 1974 - Inside Out with Hancock, Maupin, Williams, Hart, Gleeson, Bill Summers, ... 1975 - Sunburst with Hart, Maupin, Julian Priester, Williams, Harvey Mason, Alphonso Johnson, Bobby Hutcherson, George Duke, ... 1976 - Heritage with Priester, Hart, Patrice Rushen, Mtume, Mike Clarke, Hadley Caliman, Paul Jackson, ... 1977 - Comin' Through see Heritage 1978 - Mahal with Hancock, Maupin, Priester, Summers, Jackson, Mtume, Ray Obiedo, ... 1979 - Running To Your Love with ???? May I add the Julian Priester albums of the 1970's which lovers of the Sextant days might also find interesting (they also are not available on CD (though LL will be in 1999), but I have the vinyl versions): 1974 - Love, Love with Hadley Caliman, Patrick Gleeson, ... 1977 - Polarization with Ray Obiedo and other players which are unknown to me You see, there's quite a lot out there, and, according to the personnel, it all seems very interesting (to me at least). Wish I could get my hands on these records!! Part of my problem with the piece was that the "randomness" of the alterations between funk and dissonance only seemed (to me) random in the sense that Morris felt like he had to do _something_ up there to justify his role as conductor. Many times I would have enjoyed letting the band simply continue on, either funkily or dissonantly, to see what they'd discover. I found myself thinking, "OK, Butch, provide these guys with the germ of your idea and let them take off with it." But, I guess that wouldn't be a "conduction". Bitch, bitch bitch.... And while it is a typically powerful and beautiful CT solo disc, I just want to mention that nowhere on the outside of the package ((C) and (P) 1998) is there any evidence to indicate that the recording actually dates from 3/19/91, a live performance from the "Deutsche Oper Berlin." CT fans will be more than satisfied by the performance, but the lack of CT recordings more recent than 1993 (the date "Always a Pleasure" was recorded) continues. I haven't a clue why this should be. Anyone here catch CT's gig at Tribeca Hall during the Texaco Festival? Once again, as when he was at Iridium earlier in the year, what was billed as a trio was in fact a quartet, which in itself would have been incentive for me to go hear them Soprano saxophonist Harri Sj=F6str=F6m = was on this date and the Iridium run, neither of which I knew about until well after the fact. Is it really that hard to get the facts right when it's CT? (A rhetorical question... it's late and I'm cranky...)
