The show will take place at 8PM, with a surprise opening act. Tickets are $15. Oh yes, the Trio is Ken Vandermark on reeds, Kent Kessler on bass, and Hamid Drake on drums. Coming all the way from Chicago, too. Craig and I recently traveled to the Knitting Factory to meet Ken, playing that night with Sweetnighter's favorite guitarist Joe Morris (perhaps a future show) and Hans Poppel. Ken played clarinet exclusively that night, but will have his full arsenal of weapons on Friday night. Uri Caine will be performing his Mahler tribute tonight at the Knitting Factory. We are taking the first steps in having this fantastic work performed here in Philadelphia. Uri's recent cd signing at Classical Choice, 21st and Walnut, was quite successful. In addition to the Mahler discs, Uri brought copies of his yet unreleased in the USA Wagner in Vienna. What a piece of work this one is. Sold out very quickly. We will have more signed copies to sell shortly, for you lucky Philadelphians. Uri is looking forward to doing this gig here in his hometown. For those of you outside the area, you may be lucky enough to pick up one of the Wagner discs by contacting Classical Choice at http://www.cdchoice.com Thanks for the space. Blecch. I have the Paul Motian Trio disk on W&W and have to say that I like the finish of the packaging. The way that the CD is held in the case is pretty sloppy, however. It slides around, sticks out of the case, and as a result becomes scratched. Nice looking, I think, but not very functional. Last summer I picked up the "Big Satan" disc at Other Music and wondered "what is this clunky thing?". Great music, of course, and I personally don't mind the artwork (it's Byram, right?). But it looks and feels like some government issue black box, and each time I go for the CD or put it back in its case it seems like it's about to be mauled by the corrugated casing. Ugh. Still, a great trio record. And as for Wobbly Rail, kudos to Mac on his endeavor. I highly recommend the Lacy disc, though it's only the first set of a stellar concert. The Winter & Winter packaging was created by edel in Germany to Stefan Winter's pecifications. But the art is all Steve Byram, with photos by Robert Lewis. They are the unsung heroes of Downtown art design. New World hired Byram to do their Countercurrents series so they could look as hip as JMT. Winter & Winter continues to use Byram and Lewis. And of course all the Screwgun covers are designed by Steve, although the spanking illo on the cover of Ducret's album is actually by someone else.
