Most, if not all, of the Masada song titles are taken from chapter names in the Hebrew Bible. Hebrew biblical chapter titles are derived from a key word (often the first word) in the opening sentence of the chapter. Often the name is of a person or a place, but can sometimes be a verb. I'm not sure if some of the titles are from the talmud, but I definitely recongnized some as originating from the Hebrew bible. Speaking of Goldberg, Wollesen, and Trevor Dunn (and John Schott), what do you guys (non gender specific) think of "Junk Genius". I was quite disappointed, knowing how talented they all are and have been in other contexts, by their shows here in Vancouver. Dunn and Wollesen had their moments, but Goldberg and Schott seemed uninspired and bored. I was under the impression that the inspiration for the group was that dark, raw, energy that is present in parker-era bop that is so often ignored by those contemporary players who purport to play "bop", resulting in generic, dull, lifeless renditions of bop standards that were anything but lifeless when played by the original artsists. If this was the inspiration for the group, I was unable to detect its manifestation. Any comments? What you may be confusing it with are the segments for the weekly readings of the Torah (the "parshiyot haShavuah", which do have names as you describe. However, a quick look at the track listings for both Bar Kokhba and The Circle Maker show no song titles that match any of these names. - - ---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------1---------- |||/ Joseph Zitt ===== jzitt@humansystems.com ===== Human Systems \||| ||/ Maryland? = <*> SILENCE: The John Cage Mailing List <*> = ecto \|| |/ http://www.realtime.net/~jzitt ====== Comma: Voices of New Music \| - - ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 20 Jul 1998 16:00:06 -0400 From: Matt Lyon Subject: Re: Masada titles? When I said chapters I was refering to the weekly readings, or "parshiyot hashavuah". In my attempt to find a suitable english word I guess I caused some confusion. In a quick glance over the tracks in Masada IX I recall "Acharei Mot" as being the name of a parasha in the bible. (The actual name of the parasha is Acharei, but "Acharei Mot" is in the first sentence). Glancing over the song list it appears that most are not from the bible. Actually, as the listing at http://bible.ort.org/bible/index/inx_haft.htm shows, there are several parshiyot with two-word names. A lot of the names are from post-Biblical times. I've spotted some names of tractares of the Talmud, later place names, and the like. (The origin of the name of my favorite Masada tune, Idalah-Abal, completely escapes me.) Perhaps we should put a crew together and see how many of the names we can pin down, if it hasn't been done already. It would probably count as an FAQ or something :-). I'd be willing to act as focus person for it. > I'm in no way a bible expert, but I hope ten years of Hebrew day school didn't > go to waste : ) I'll see your ten years and toss in nine years of day school, four of evening Hebrew High School and a semester at Yeshiva U. But maybe I'm being too kind and/or too hard on myself. Goldberg doesn't seem to have the strength (to use that for want of a better word) that folks like Marty Ehrlich, John Carter and Francois Houle do. Pick up the new Houle CD on Songlines if you're interested. It's a salute to John Carter with Dave Douglas, Mark Dresser, Dylan Van Der Schlyff (sp) and Peggy Lee (no, not that one --the cellist).
