I have to agree with Patrice that Fell's Compilation III is fantastic. Though a long work, it works both as a complete piece, as well as in snippets if you don't have a lot of time, or is ideal for radio broadcast (though I played the full 123 minutes on the air a few months ago!). Though I have seen it compared to Barry Guy's writing for LJCO, Compilation III, also known as Composition 30, is very different, in that it incorporates more diverse elements to create a whole, rather than writing a single piece of music. A brilliant piece of music, definitely one of my favorite releases from last year. Another very interesting Fell project from last year is Frankenstein, which is an bass/saxes/electronics/cut and paste project with saxist Charles Wharf. Very fun and crazy music can go from straight jazz to off the wall electronics in a second. I have a couple of other Fell discs which I also like quite a bit, but haven't yet gotten around to getting anything by the Fell/Hession/Wilkinson trio. Should I? I've heard good things about Horrors of Darmstadt, as well a mediocre reviews of the new one on Incus with Joe Morris. Actually, I believe they were held up at US Customs for many hours on their way to Toronto. That's why it was such a late show. All I can say is I LOVE the new album (I listened to twice today, in fact, and I've had it for about 3 months). It's more of a pop album than the other two, but it's very much a Bungle album. I notice new things about it every time I hear it. It's the best album I've picked up this year. I witnessed the Chicago show, and it was even better than I expected. (I saw them here on the DV tour, and they just about put me to sleep) But this time, it was much different. They are playing an alternate version of My Ass Is On Fire that is worth the admission price alone. According to what I have been reading on Alt.Music.Bungle, they have been kinda hit or miss on this tour. Some shows have been great (like Chicago, where they did a second encore of Merry Go ByeBye and Raping Your Mind) and some not so great. I think they have been paying attention to their audience. When the audience just chants for Girls of Porn, It seems to kinda bum the band out.... They have been playing California pretty much in it's entirety, 3 or 4 from the first album, and 1 or 2 from DV..... - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 6 Aug 1999 20:28:27 EDT From: JonAbbey2@aol.com Subject: Re: Bruce Flips His Finger In a message dated 8/6/99 4:34:50 PM, lgiven1@julian.uwo.ca writes: << I have a couple of other Fell discs which I also like quite a bit, but haven't yet gotten around to getting anything by the Fell/Hession/Wilkinson trio. Horrors of Darmstadt is the best of the three out, I think. the duo CD of Graham Halliwell and Simon, 9 Points In Ascent (Bruce's Fingers), is also a nice one if you're looking for more Fell. Good show, if a little rocky. On occaison, JZ almost seems willing to throw the show if he's not happy with the conditions/results, and this seemed like one of those. He was making faces as bright yellow lights went on midset, and then when the white flood lights suddenly went on full blast during a song, he took the mike and said "Who's working the lights? You're an idiot! That's why you're working at the Knitting Factory." (I talked to Bruce Gallanter, who was sitting by the soundboard (as per usual) after the set, and he said that somebody knocked into the board and the woman working it was very upset and couldn't find what the guy had hit). Then all the lights went out for a few seconds, before they were straightened out. The disruptions led Zorn to circular blow one progression over and over for what seemed like 10 minutes while he held a mike by the cord and let it swing, banging into his sax. So maybe it was a little protest on his part. That's what it seemed. But it still sounded great -- art in the face of adversity. Patton was OK. I really like some of his ensemble CDs (Weird Little Boy and the group piece on Tzadik, name escapes me). Live I always enjoy and am never wowed (haven't seen Faith No Bungle tho). The glue for the gig was Ikue, who provides a nice fabric for her counterparts squawks and flutters. Best moment visually was JZ and MP both screaming into their mikes, with Ikue in the middle, in her nice summer dress, looking down and smiling for a couple minutes before she started playing. Next day went to a taping of New Sounds Live with Zorn, Mori, Wadada Leo Smith and Lois Vierk (and met a coupla Z-listers there). Won't go on too much ... Zorn-composed piano/violin piece (Steven Drury on piano); interesting Vierk string quartet; nice Mori/DJOlive duo. High point was Smith's duet with Min Xiao-Fen (Smith also presented solo guitar and solo pipa pieces). The whole program was 90 minutes and the show is 60, so I fear the JZ piece and some other parts will likely be excerpted. Also interviews with all composers. (John Schaeffer: Let's talk a little about your Masada project. JZ: I'd rather talk about what's going on here tonight. This is really great). Zorn also went on at length about how the downtown scene really hasn't come very far in 15 yrs., because their records are still filed under "jazz" and "classical" and not "experimental" or "avant garde" or "unusual music" at places like Tower. The New Sounds show will air on 8/24 at 11 p.m. on WNYC 93.9 FM in NYC, and I know many other public radio stations also broadcast the series. kg n.p. I was looking at the Chicago Jazz Fest lineup for this year and was intrigued when I saw that Masada will be playing there Friday Sept. 3. I am assuming this is Zorn's band Masada and not some other weird group? At any rate the Chicago jazzfest is a free show in Grant Park, so I'm pretty excited if Zorn will be there. Masada plays from 7:15-8:10pm. Before them is "A Tribute To Thomas A Dorsey" by Maggie Brown from 6:00-6:10 (that's a pretty small tribute!! Maybe it's a misprint....) and George Freeman Trio featuring Chris Foreman will be on from 6:15-7:05. Haven't heard much props for it > > > here yet... Like others have said, it's more song oriented, and short by their standards (45 min). But the production is superb and if you take it on its own terms, rather than expecting something like Disco Volante, I think it's very likeable. > Some parts may sound a bit like SC3, but like you said, most > surprisingly, these parts are credited to Patton. This is my favorite one, "Ars Moriendi". It's like the "Ciocarlia" song on the SC3 live album. That was a cover of a traditional, like they've said, and this one at least has a strong resemblence to a song on the Taraf de Haidouks CD on Nonsuch (see the last song). Anyway, these are Romanian, but most of the other Secret Chiefs 3 stuff is more mid-eastern or Indian. At least, of what is 'eastern-sounding'. I saw Mr. Bungle in D.C. on 8/6, and it was good, but they do a lot of laboring trying to reproduce the production details. Also, the sound wasn't too great for the first part of the show and, again b/c of all the details and keyboard parts, this can really take away from things. But the last half was really great. I drove 6 hrs. and thought it was worth it.
