If this CD is a legal release then consent isn't required, though the uneasy match between trademark and copyright law means there's probably enough to argue the case into court. As to whether the CD is legally released that will depend on who owns the copyright and what rights were granted to Cadence/CIMP; it could easily be perfectly legit and in no sense a bootleg and still be "unauthorized" by Dixon. None of this touches on the moral issues & it's pretty clear that there's some story behind this we may never know. I don't know much about them, but I have and like the album. They, and various New Music all stars, do the works well. Most of them are somewhat vague text scores, giving them a lot of leeway, but as far as I can tell, they do them accurately and listenably. Are the reissues from Douglas and Survival already released? The website seems to say so as well but that's a lot of stuff to come out all at once. 2. Three of the Shannon Jackson albums were former Caravan of Dreams releases but are the others listed previously unreleased? 3. It's nice that some rare Rashied Ali and Blood Ulmer stuff is coming out but I'm not too thrilled about the Liquid Audio-only format. Is it possible to burn this onto CD-R? Is the sound quality better than RealAudio? It'd be nice if they were a bit more clear about what these are: the Ulmer listing has a name/title and year but I can't tell if they're concerts or album reissues (some have the same name as his albums but not having heard the albums in years and years I can't be sure the track listing is the same). The website lists some downloads but again is so vague that you can't tell exactly what you're geting. There's a Test show from October 99 that sells for $6 but it's labelled a "song" so is it an entire show or just one piece or what? (& it doesn't help that the entire website is both slower and more confusing than necessary.) 4. Is the Shimmy-Disc Boredoms album out of print since it's no longer on their list? The only readily available Taj Mahal Travellers is the amazing double-disc on P-Vine called 'August 1974'. They also have an impossible-to-find LP from '72 on CBS Sony and one side on the 'Oz Days Live' double LP (included on the recent single LP bootleg version which seems to have disappeared). The P-Vine set is essential, though. Definitely pick that one up. The best place to start with Abe Kaoru is probably 'Solo, 1972/1/21' on PSF. Three alto sax solos and one on bass clarinet, all played with the most inspiration and concentration I've ever heard from Abe. -Tom Pratt __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I put this on the stereo, hit play, and I was just frozen in my seat for the duration. God, this has got to be the re-release of the year. Definitely the most intense duo recording with Abe Kaoru out there. Usually I prefer his solo stuff, just the pure blare of his alto and sopranino improvisations. There are three solo CDs on PSF: Matanohi No Yumemonogatari(sp?-Another Day's Dream)PSFD-40, Hikari Kagayaku Nintai (Brightened Patience)PSFD-46, Mokuyobi No Yoru (A Night in Thursday)PSFD-66 all recorded in '72. I believe all these PSF CDs are still in print. I also dig most of the Solo Live at Gaya series(if I had to pick one, it would be Vol. 2, with extended improvs on "Chim Chim Cheree" and "Lonely Woman"), but until the boxed set of all 10+1 comes out, I have no advice as to how to get hold of them. As for the PSF label in general, I think the Che-Shizu and Cinorama CDs are a good place to start in terms of lesser known releases. All of the Haino Keiji related CDs are essential; solo, Fushitsusha, Lost Aaraaff, Vajra...for Mikami Kan, I think the U.S.E. CD is a good place to start, for Tomokawa Kazuki , PSF released a 3CD collection that shows what he's about. I've never been disappointed in a PSF release - it is a worthy successor to the ESP label for documenting the outside regions of music. - -CLupold - ----- Original Message ----- From: Nirav Soni To: DroneOn List ; Sent: Thursday, November 25, 1999 12:16 PM Subject: PSF/DIW/etc. > I'd like to check out some of the Japanese improv/psych stuff on PSF/DIW/etc.. > Only, I have very little idea where to start.
