I thought i can share some info with the rest out there ... Coming from Greece I know a few things that I really like that are on the border of being jazz and are worth checking out... However I am not sure if there any chance they can found outside Greece.... WUTU WUPATU is the first band, and FLORINA BRASS BAND the other. They share some kind of common feeling and are both led by Floros Floridis (sax), (who has also often played with P.KOWALD and others of the german scene, and even opened for SONIC YOUTH last year) FBB is quite folk orientated, but nevertheless great. Both are quite unlike PACHORA, due to the heavy brass section and the accordeon. They are out on a Greek label "ANO KATO RECORDS" (=up-down recs) who also have several more folk/jazzy stuff. I have a compilation CD of that label, if someone is really interested I can try to make a copy. And by the way last year when I saw Pachora live I thought shit how can they sound so Greek when they come from the other side of the planet... I am still wondering... I will ask them next month when they play at the BIMhuis... I haven't heard them, but I've heard a lot of the members' other projects, including the infamous Original Otto Orchestra (a sax quartet who play many styles, including Bulgarian folk music as well as the Martian National Anthem). Anyway, they're playing the Paddington RSL on the 19th of February. Check them out if you happen to be passing through Sydney! - - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2000 08:55:12 -0500 From: David Keffer Subject: New Haino Review Hello folks on the Zorn-list, Here is a review of the new cd on Shambala, "Y" with Keiji Haino, Jean-Francois Pauvros and Francois Causse. The recent collaborations of Haino with western musicians have either been improv sessions with a pretty serious disconnect between the musicians (Haino/Laswell/Ali) or acoustic jazz jam sessions (Haino/Cohen/Baron), the latter of which is nice in its own right but does not have the same energy that Haino's Japanese trios (Fushitsusha, Aihiyo, ) have. However, the Haino/Pauvros/Causse trio is different. This trio manages to attain a Fushitsusha-like connectedness. Once the disc gets going, the trio is playing together. It's not quite as intense or dense as Fushitsusha, although there are a few "rocking" moments. All in all, a delightful surprise and altogether worth checking out. (Haino appears on both vocals and guitar.) David K. - - ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Feb 2000 06:26:00 -0800 (PST) From: Theo Klaase Subject: Zorn boots... Every response promised to rectify the situation immediately, only to be followed by total silence and a lack of delivery. Had they not had it in stock and weren't able to provide it I would have had no problem with them, but my plastic was billed and they never said anything about lack of supply, leading me to conclude that that wasn't the issue. This venue is creating a home for Balkan and Balkan-inspired music downtown, with bands like Pachora, Brad Shepik, Sveti, Paradox Trio, Slavic Soul Party!, etc. Also, the series features master musicians playing traditional music from the Balkans. Schedule for the rest of Feb. below: Feb 12: Pachora Pachora combines the ethic of downtown improv with the folk stylings of Eastern Europe and the Middle East - NYC's answer to the future of avant garde/global pop music. Feb 19: The Kolevi 6 The Kolevi 6 is led by Bulgarian virtuoso gadulka player Nikolai Kolev, and features the stunning singing of Donka Koleva and her daughters Maria and Pepa. This group performs Bulgarian gems in the contemporary folk style -- dizzying meters and tempos, wonderful harmonies, and songs alive with the pain and joy of life in Bulgaria. Feb 26: Paradox Trio Matt Darriau was recently named one of the most influential jazz musicians of the last fifteen years by Jazziz magazine for his impact in bringing Balkan and world rhythms to jazz. With Paradox Trio he adds his multi-reed talents to the complex modes of Balkan folk and Rom ("gypsy") music. The Den 44 Ave A. at 3rd St. in the E. LA WOMAN, people seem to have a lot of fun. Creativity? I am not sure that Bjork (who I like a lot) is that creative. I think that she keeps her ears opened and that she have spies in every potentially hip music genres around, making her detailed weekly reports about what is on its way in and what is on its way out :-). Is Cibo Matto creative? Not to the level of John Cage, for sure. But making records that you can recognize right away (even though dealing with genres that have passed the limit date) and produce good vibe, is enough for me. BTW, aren't the discussions about creativity specially relevant with music that don't move you (like: what a boring record, but so creative!)? I mean, if a record is good (as measured by the number of times you play it), who cares if it is creative? Bottom line, Cibo Matto did not invent hot water (like we say in France), but if they did not exist, we would have to invent them. It's a nice little space and a great vibe. I was there last Saturday for opening night of the series, featuring Merita Halili & Raif Hyseni and Ma= tt=92s own Slavic Soul Party (which featured Chris Speed, Ted Reichman, Curtis Hasselbring and a wonderful trumpeter whose name I didn't catch). Halili= was a spellbinding singer and Hyseni was a virtuosic player - together they w= ere magical and I'm really happy to have heard them. ("Here's where everyone learns that I suck," Reichman muttered to me with a smile just before Hys= eni started playing.) Ted, by the way, was characteristically underplaying his own considerable skills. I'd read about Slavic Soul Party on numerous occasions, and this show bore out what a blast they are (though I gather it was a bit less unhinged than some of their other performances, perhaps because The Den i= s such a small space). Didn't stop about a dozen people, young and old, fr= om clearing tables away and forming a circle dance up front. Slavic Soul Pa= rty has just recorded, by the way, so keep an eye out... I think the gig on Matt's upcoming list I'm most excited about is the Kol= evi 6, mainly because I know so little about contemporary Bulgarian music... It's great to have a new home for Pachora and Paradox and so on, especial= ly a home where they can play to audiences that DON'T go to the Knit - you cou= ld really see this in the demographic mix of the crowd. But it's "the maste= r musicians playing traditional music from the Balkans" that's really got m= e psyched, especially with the voice of Halili still ringing in my ears. W= ere it not for this series, I doubt I'd ever have heard OF her, let alone hea= rd her.
