No, that mesage I remember. But I had thought that some time within the last year or so there had been a larger discussion about which of Shepp's discs were worthwhile, which were shit, and so on. I'd wanted to revisit this as part of researching a story I'm about to write. But while we're on the subject, there is now a CD available from the Shepp/Rudd Jazz Standard run I reviewed back in September (the message you quoted). It's out on Universal in France. No word yet as to when (or even whether) Verve in the US will deem it worthy of release. IMHO, it is. It's not on the level of the '60s Impulse releases, but it ain't bad, as were some of the '80s releases. The disc, by the way, is the first of a five-CD deal producer Verna Gillis has made with Universal France. I think the deal is actually Roswell's, but he's sharing the riches with other friends. There's a Sheila Jordan/Rudd disc coming next year, and a lot more besides. Now we just need to gang up on Verve to issue the stuff here... or we need to send Patrice on a shopping expedition for the rest of us... ;-) Steve Smith ssmith36@sprynet.com - -----Original Message----- From: Patrice L. Nice package, nice notes, good sound. Some typos and malaprops in the essays, but nothing outrageous. About time someone did this catalog right (though part of me still wishes Stollman had sold it to Folkways instead...). The Calibre series has been going on for over a year now, I think. You can tell which ones are theirs... the jazz issues come in a sort of auburn-colored cardborad sleeve around the jewel box. (I think the rock releases are a different color, if vague memory serves.) And they're being issued numerically. They're fullprice, which is silly, and I think the 'Slug's Saloon' Ayler dates are still split on two discs even though each is only about 30 minutes long. But they seem to be in every major store I frequent. Not to mention the inability of so many players >to decide that to *not* >play something is as important as scrabbling on. Knowing when to shut up and not barrel forward all the time is probably the key to real virtuosity in that field (and not to mention makes it more musical IMO, rather than a chops display, no matter how weird the chops). And speaking of, I just got the Guy/Gustafsson Frogging disc and found Guy's playing a bit like the scrabbling-on mentioned. I know he's highly regarded but I found his playing didn't "breathe" at all on this, or whatever. It's great at first, like Bailey, but then the often ceaseless momentum becomes very tired and sometimes obnoxious. Their vocabularies are obviously enormous, and the playing is good, but it doesn't get me excited the way Gustafsson's other stuff for example does. And I've only listened once or twice, but that's the initial response to it. I only say this heresy so someone who gets a feeling for what I dig might offer a recommendation or two for some texture/power non-idiomatic insect improv (when you can't find a suitable term, just use them all) that breathes a bit. Maybe this is a tall order... Thanks much, Ryan N. The book goes into depth on ornette's harmolodic theory, the technical aspects of it, but not enough of the real theoretical. As I read more about the theoretical aspects I began attributing certain characteristics to my art work. Most of my inspiration comes from music, so I look to non technical forms of orchestrating musicians as a way to organize visual art processes. It is no surprise why I am drawn to the z-list in this regard. According to peter wilson there was a book on harmolodic theory in the works, but due to one reason or another was sacked. Ornette apparently expressed interest in writing the book like a novel so that even non-musicians would be inspired to create music. I found a good site that outlines some very soft ideas, but it is almost impossible to try and apply them to anything specific. http://www.eyeneer.com/Labels/Harmolodic/HARMOLODIC.html I am looking for any information the z-list might have in regard to harmolodic theory or the status of the harmolodic book. Or even, how to get in touch with any educational resources that may apply harmolodics. [is it possible to email ornette?!?!] I took some inspiration from what zorn discussed in the jazziz article last year about his notetaking process and adaped it to my photographic style. I'm cross posting this to the Miles and Zorn lists. Last night (12 March) Dave Douglas Tiny Bell Trio (Dave Douglas, Brad Shepik and Jim Black) present themselfs in Lisbon, at CCB (centro cultural de Belem). The concert was great. They've started slow with Black on drums and with a lot of other "gadgets": bells, sand boxes and a few more i just don't know how they are called. He also used his dishes in unconventional maners (maybe not, but i'm not used to that), especially like those guys playing with saws... They went from very fast to very slow, from real hapiness (almost Balcans style) to very touching one's, and in one piece Douglas (alone) almost simulated what I best describe as a couple of toons arguing among themselfs :). He got some weird sounds from his trumpet (not so weird if one is aknowledged with mister Z. work ;)), playing it in the most curious manners (with his nose or blowing directly into the pistons). This got a few lafs from the audience anyway. Shepik is also a great player and the three semmed to enjoy what they were doing. At one moment Douglas and Shepik were starting to cut in in a piece but give up a few times because of Black performance (he was using his drums and all his array of the so mentioned "gadgets"). They didn't seemed upset just happy because of the way Black was playing and his enjoyment in that particular piece. In other several pieces Douglas went away to the darker side of the stage, leaving Shepik and Black playing alone and sometimes coming back, trumpet in hand, blowing fast or just really slow, resulting in a very good way to my ears... They went back for two encores, the last one of them when there was a lot of aplaused still but some folks were already leaving. This got some lafs also from the applauding believers ;). I've made a record of the concert in minidisc, I'm trying to get it on CDR. If anyone interested please just say. And does anyone know the url to Dave Douglas site (and if Jim Black's, or Shepik?). I would like to send them a copy of the recording...
