The purpose of the Webhancer program is to "track" the "metrics" of your web-surfing, allegedly anonymously, and "report" it back to unnamed companies. While they claim that what they're doing is not an invasion of privacy and that your personal security and privacy are never compromised, it's still noteworthy that the program downloads and installs automatically, and that furthermore, if you run the "uninstall" instructions for Webhancer provided by AudioGalaxy, it DOES NOT uninstall. It's still there, purring away in the background, sending whatever to whomever - it just becomes invisible. This didn't deter me, however. With a bit of research, I was able to find a program called Ad-Aware, a free download that searches your drives and registries for unwanted spyware (most of which tracks your surfing and then sells it to advertisers so that they can target their spam to your likely consumption patterns), and then cleanly uninstalls that spyware. Those working behind personal or corporate firewalls may not encounter the problem at all - I've exchanged private e-mail with one Z'lister whose personal firewall prevented the Webhancer download. But personally, I was amazed at all the little critters Ad-Aware dug out of my system. Some programs are engineered to not run without the related spy components, but this is not the case with Satellite. I've had a dandy time, therefore, downloading old tracks by Mercyful Fate, Venom, Obituary and Emperor as research for a piece I'm working on, not to mention a complete Japanese concert by King Crimson spinoff ProjeKct Two. The Satellite itself is a dandy little application that works in the background while you do other things. Many nights I'll be sitting here with two files simultaneously downloading while two more files are being uploaded by other users, all with little appreciable drain on my system resources. On the other hand, given that its database server is even more centrally contained than Napster's was, it's generally assumed that it will be even easier to bust these guys and put them out of business when they've attracted the requisite attention. Indeed, already tunes by Bjork, Metallica and other usual suspects have been blocked, though people are getting around this through clever renaming conventions (like listing the entire contents of the new Bjork album 'Vespertine' as being tunes by someone named "Bjork Vespertine." And, as Rob mentioned, there are indeed some pretty copious listings for avant-garde music files, including an amount of Nurse With Would nearly as daunting as their real-life discography. I'll further add, in case Hilary Rosen is tracking my e-mail now, that in every case in which I've liked something I've downloaded, I've gone right out and purchased the CD if it's commercially available. This baby goes as far as digging into the Windows registry for abondoned adware occurances, and gives you choices on each file as to keep or delete them. What did surprise me was the fact that there were two or three musical pieces in the film that were not by Zorn. Oh, and the weird track with the drum-computer and JZ singing was used as an instrumental only. patRice np: Tabla Beat Science, Tala Matrix nr: Skin & Ink - - ------------------------------ End of Zorn List Digest V3 #561 ******************************* To unsubscribe from zorn-list-digest, send an email to "majordomo@lists.xmission.com" with "unsubscribe zorn-list-digest" in the body of the message.
