As for getting charged up, there's prolly lotsa room fer analysis of the reasons why...personally, i feel we should try to make better peace with the inevitable intersections of human activity that were once less distinguishable, like science/music/religion/art/politics. i see similiar revulsion at the proto-science of sociobiology, given it's non-scientific cooptation by 19th, 20th and now? 21st century extremist politics. eventually science will be turned to larger questions that offend, and whether we becomes androids as a result is largely up to us individually.... speaking of floating (not quite flying) fur, am I the only person pissed that Laswell canceled his appearance at friday's Tonic benefit (he was the ostensible headliner)? I mean, aside from that thing with jah wobble, Laswell has canceled every gig he's booked in nyc for like the last year. i'm as indulgent as anyone of my fave artists foibles, but c'mon, this shit is pretty disrespectful already! Hi, Semi-interesting article, but why must we have scientists figure out how music affects us when we already know? Maybe if they can explain every feeling, we won't have to really feel anything- we can just look it up in some manual like a damn android. It's not like they found out that music kills brain cells- then we'd be surprised (although they would feel vindicated in Afghanistan apparently). It reminds me of the studies where it was suggested that students who played music were better at math. Because that's why I got into music- to improve my math scores. Maybe they can explain how sarcasm affects the brain. :~) And sorry, I don't mean offense to the person posting, I just got surprisingly charged up on this one. - - ---Ryan N. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp - - ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Sep 2001 20:14:50 -0700 (PDT) From: Ryan Novak Subject: Re: Re-Issues > > >From a philosophical perspective, > > the purpose of reissues is to make more widely > > available a release that has gone out of > circulation. > > A limited-release reissue is hard to understand... > > But with this kind of music, are not all the > releases kind of limited ones? > > I, on the other side, find it miraculous that > records with a potential > audience less that a thousand can be reissued. There > is no business sense > behing that, just passion (and maybe the naive > belief that on the reissue > more people will take the risk of checking it...). I was not around for most of the original "issues" of a lot of classic records so I get rather frustrated about their unavailability. Some of the best stuff I've heard from Brotzmann I got off Napster from some kind soul/souls who had digitized some of the B/Van Hove/Bennink LPs (Balls, Tschus, etc). And yet there is a CD re-issue of Nipples which doesn't totally turn my crank (or twist my nipples!). But, I'd tend to think reissues can often do better than the original releases because they are now more easily put into "historical perspective". Very helpful in hyping up the album, plus people tend to be more intrigued about certain things after some authority, in this case maybe only the test of time, confirms its relevance. But, "Balls" would make a nice reissue companion for Nipples so I'm hopeful. I have to speak from a perspective of a Brotzmann fan, because it's what I know best, but I'm sure it's frustrating for everyone interested in this kind of thing, especially us young ones who never even got a chance to hear the LPs. :~( - --Ryan N. My favorite art song discs are Packet (New Albion), which features Frederic Rzewski!, and Songs (hatART), but you can't go wrong with The Way (hatART), Futurities (hatART), Vespers (SoulNote), and The Cry (SoulNote). The albums on RCA/Novus aren't as good but are still pleasant. Stay away from the Miro Foundation disc. Solo disc: I haven't heard many, but I can highly recommend Remains (hatART). More Monk (Soul Note) is good but nothing special. Monk: I'll second the Five Facings disc on FMP. Also the duo discs on hatART w/Mal Waldron are good. I hear We See is supposed to be excellent. You might want to wait for the hatOLOGY reissue.
