Which unfortunately leaves me with another uninteresting hip-hop (?) album. Dale. I agree. I didn't think the hip-hop aspect was all that compellingly rendered, and Herbie's solos sounded kind of phoned in over top of this rather undistinguished bed of electronic wash. Herbie's always been at his best when interacting with other players in the moment, and it would be interesting to see what would happen if he was made to face off with a Cut Chemist or a Mixmaster Mike. skip h np: THE WORLD"S GREATEST SINNER - - ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 01 Feb 2002 22:19:12 -0800 From: Skip Heller Subject: Re: new to the list > From: Banjology > Date: Fri, 1 Feb 2002 20:56:23 -0800 (PST) > To: zorn-list@lists.xmission.com > Subject: new to the list > > Hi all, > My name is John. One of the most amazing and totally out came from the cd Jazz Magazine had with its last december issue: "I" (Chanson Surrealiste), a 1948 song. Noir desir always been a good band but the last Noir Desir album is a great thing for French rock.....a very good album, intelligent, great lyrics......2001 best french album for sure. My favorite French artist is Alain Bashung. The last 3 albums from Bashung are great. There is a constant evolution in Bashung's works and that what makes him different from the other French band or artist. I personnaly find that Fantaisie Militaire is the best French album from the 90s. If you haven't already listen to "La nuit je mens", you definately have to try it......it's a great, great song. Following Bashung in my personnal french all of fame there is Dominique A. As Bashung, there is an evolution in his albums....He started with some popular hits (like 'twenty-two Bar') but the albums were more complex. Then his albums became more and more complex so people found them hard-to-listen but for me all of them are must-have albums. So if you want to discover some great French artists, try these one up there !!! :) Bza - - ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 2 Feb 2002 12:40:11 +0200 From: Oger Subject: Re: French pock/rop Well, what is swing ? He is more influenced by his roots : african traditional music. Of course, it makes more sense in that case. If you don't know him, and if you live in France (?), try listening to him. If this is the Not Necessarily English Music collection I asked about a few days ago, I'm listening to it now. By a strange coincidence, this arrived in my mailbox the day after I posted my inquiry, and if anyone is interested in the set, I'd highly recommend spending a little extra and getting the Leonardo Music Journal, which is devoted to this set and contains a great deal of extra written material (although no convenient jewel box for the cds). The music itself is, predictably, rather raw. Steve Beresford, for example, has two short tracks, both of which were recorded on 6-inch vinyl in "Record your own voice" booths in train stations. The AMM track is from the same period as the ReR album, but again, a live recording and considerably low-fi. There are excellent performances from John Stevens, Parker & Lytton, Derek Bailey (although this track is also available on one of his solo Incus releases, the only track here available elsewhere). The noisier tracks, like the ones by Daphne Oram and Ranulph Glanville, are wonderfully reminiscent of the early live electronics from Cage & Tudor, and have a fresh approach that is missing from many post-modern improv artists.
